Wednesday, January 14, 1998 Athletics South Africa admit to admin blunder JOHANNESBURG Athletics South Africa (ASA) admitted yesterday that an administrative error had caused the blunder over the Commonwealth Games qualification standards. Its initial requirements released in early December were corrected shortly before Christmas following an outcry by athletes and coaches over the guidelines which were far tougher than those set out for the World Championships in Athens last year. The revised requirements are exactly the same as those issued for Athens. "The standards given out first were from a discussion document sent out before we decided on the standards for Athens," ASA secretary general Banele Sindani said. "That document was used as a guideline last year. "The person who pulled out the standards for the Commonwealth Games mistakenly pulled the wrong document out of the computer." Sindani denied that ASA were forced to lower the standards because of complaints from coaches and athletes.

(Feb. 2, 2005) - - Swimmer Michael Phelps , gymnast Carly Patterson and the U.S. Olympic Softball Team have been voted the 2004 United States Olympic Committee SportsMan, SportsWoman and Team of the Year, respectively. Taekwondo Olympic gold medalist Steven Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas) finished fifth in the SportsMan of the Year voting, joining Phelps, gymnast Paul Hamm (Waukesha, Wis.), cyclist Lance Armstrong (Austin, Texas) and track and field athlete Justin Gatlin (Raleigh, N.C.) as the top five vote getters. Phelps (Towson, Md.) is the first American - and the only person in a non-boycotted Olympic Games - to win eight Olympic medals at a single Games. He won four individual titles (100m fly, 200m fly, 200m IM and 400m IM) at the Athens Games - matching Mark Spitz's individual total - plus the bronze medal in the 200m free and three relay medals, including gold leading off the 800m free, gold swimming in the preliminaries of the 400m medley (teammate Ian Crocker replaced him in the finals) and bronze in the 400m free. Additionally, Phelps broke the 400m IM world record, the American records in the 200m free and 800m free relay, and Olympic records six times while competing in the Athens Games. Returning to competition a mere two months after the Olympic flame was extinguished, Phelps won the gold medal in 200m free and set a new American record at the Short Course World Championships before pulling out of the meet with an injury.

Friday, 22 September, 2000, 09:51 GMT 10:51 UK 'Paula the Crawler' sets record
Bolopa - first time ever in a 50m pool
Paula Barila Bolopa has completed a unique double for Equatorial Guinea's swimming team by swimming the slowest Olympic race in history. Her feat matches that of her now famous team-mate Eric "the Eel" Moussambani in a heat of the 100m freestyle. Bolopa's effort has earned her the unenviable nickname "Paula the Crawler". It's a long way... Competing in the women's 50m freestyle sprint, 20-year-old Bolopa was roared home in an agonisingly slow one minute 03.97 seconds. That was almost 40 seconds slower than the fastest qualifier, Inge de Bruijn of the Netherlands. "It's the first time I've swum 50 metres...it was further than I thought," she said. "I was very tired." Like Moussambani, who has been inundated with calls from media and sponsors, Bolopa only started training in January and had never swum in a 50-metre pool before. Making a splash She had also never seen starting blocks before she arrived in Sydney.

Thursday, 17 August, 2000, 08:57 GMT 09:57 UK Vendt breaks US record
Vendt celebrates a stunning victory at the national trials
Erik Vendt shattered the American record in the 1500m freestyle with a time of 14 minutes 59.11 seconds to wrap up the US Olympic Swimming trials in style. Vendt and Chris Thompson, runner-up in 15:09.16secs will now head to Sydney to take on Australian Grant Hackett in his own backyard at the 2000 Olympics. "It's two dreams come true at once," said Vendt, 19. "It feels great to win and set the American record in the same race.
I'm excited to race against Hackett, but I'm not a favourite
Erik Vendt "It's been my goal ever since I started swimming the mile when I was 12 years old." Vendt broke the previous national record of 15:01.51secs, set by George DiCarlo in 1984. He became the eighth-fastest performer ever in the event - second fastest this year behind Hackett and ahead of world record-holder Kieren Perkins of Australia. Vendt said he hoped his sub-15-minute time would give the US distance free-stylers a little more respect heading into the Games.

Back to DCI SPORTS Email this story Plain text for printing Fox says goodbye to swimming after fourth-place in 50 freestyle By MIKE DeARMOND - The Kansas City Star
Date: 08/16/00 23:56
INDIANAPOLIS Impossible to translate were the tears hanging in the eyes of Catherine Fox. Were they shimmering there because her fourth-place finish in the 50-meter freestyle officially ended her chance of returning to a Summer Olympics swimming pool? Were they on the brink of falling because this was the last time she would bend her body to a starting block in a competition of any consequence? Or were those tears the result of her father, Tom, leaning over the railing of the stands at the Olympic swimming trials and yelling above the roar of the crowd: "I love you!" After a 25.59-second swim, her best of a not-quite-good-enough-for-Sydney meet, Fox scanned her emotions for a solid place. "I really don't know how to feel," said Fox, a Roeland Park native who four years ago won two relay gold medals at the Atlanta Olympics. "I hugged Pete earlier, and I kind of felt like I just sent my last kid off to college," Fox said of Pete Malone, her former coach with the Kansas City Blazers swim team.

Other - Lane 9 News - Pressure City at the Indy Speedway: U.S. Olympic Trials Preview August 6, 2000 (from the August issue of SWIMMING WORLD Magazine) By Phillip Whitten Arguably the most anxiety- and tension-ridden meet in all of swimming, the U.S. Olympic Trials is the one and only opportunity to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team. Do it here, at this quadrennial test of body and spirit, and you’re in. Fail to qualify, and it doesn’t matter what you’ve accomplished in the past—you’re plumb out of luck. There are only two Olympic berths in each event. So the Trials has come to be known as the only meet where first and second are both first … and everything else is last. Every four years a poignant mixture of agony and ecstasy is re-enacted. Every Trials has its share of upsets of "unknowns" who burst suddenly onto the world stage, and favorites and world record-holders who fail to qualify: think of Pablo Morales in ’88, or Jenny Thompson last time around.
