Origins of U.S. women's swimming success Sept. 12, 2000 KALAMAZOO When Amy Van Dyken, Lindsay Benko, Kristi Kowal and any of the other 21 members of the U.S. women's Olympic swimming team dive in during competition, they have Charlotte Epstein to thank for their being there. According to Dr. Linda J. Borish, associate professor of history and women's studies at WMU, Epstein, who died in 1938, was the force behind the formation and acceptance of the first female swimmers to compete for medals in an Olympic Games. Epstein, known as the "mother of women's swimming in America," formed the Women's Swimming Association in New York City in 1917 with the intention of teaching women to swim and preparing them for competitive swim events, which up until then didn't exist at national or Olympic levels. She is the one who challenged the U.S. Olympic Committee to allow women the opportunity to compete in the 1920 games in Antwerp, Belgium. "Back then there was not a lot of support for women in competition," Borish explains. "Eppie showed a lot of skill in battling the Olympic committee to allow women. They didn't want women to participate, not to mention little girls. One of the youngest stars of the team, Aileen Riggin, was only 14 and a half when she competed and won a gold medal in fancy diving."

Aquatics Water Polo Women’s water polo was one of the new events at the Sydney Games. When one plays water polo, the players are prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool. There are four seven-minute quarters, and water polo players may swim up to five kilometers in a single game. One must have the endurance and technique of a wonderful swimmer, a football player’s skill in passing, dribbling and shooting for a goal, and a rugby player’s strength to battle for the ball. Water polo started as the aquatic version of rugby. It began in the mid-1800s in England, before it started evolving into an aquatic resemblance of football (soccer). It had become so popular in Europe and North America, that it became an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games in Paris. Tall and long-armed athletes excel in this sport because 85 percent of the body is under water. The body is also about 85 percent submerged with all of the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling, and yanking of bathing suits, which makes the game even tougher. Only eight teams qualify in the women’s division, while twelve teams compete in the men’s division at the Olympic Games.

ABOUT SWIMMING HISTORY Swimming has been a sport for thousands of years. The modern sport of swimming, was deemed to have emerged in England in the 1830s, when the standard stroke of the day was breaststroke! The gold medal winner at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 was 19-year-old Hungarian Alfred Hajos in the 1200-meter freestyle. Swimming races at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens were open to all styles, but swimmers using The Trudgen won. This stroke was a form of today's freestyle, as it was a style of over arm swimming the inventor had watched South American Indians use. He taught it with a conventional scissor kick (later replaced by an Australian with a flutter kick). Organizers added the backstroke as an individual event in 1900, and the breaststroke followed in 1908. The butterfly came last of the modern Olympic swimming styles. Arising out of a loophole in the breaststroke rules, it debuted at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. Swimming venues have certainly evolved, from the Bay of Zea in 1896 to Paris's River Seine in 1900 to a 100-metre pool constructed inside the athletics track in 1908. Then there were the events, from a 100-metre race for Greek sailors in 1896, to underwater and obstacle races in 1900, to a "plunge for distance" in 1908. That event involved a standing dive, with contestants then remaining motionless for 60 seconds or until their heads broke the surface — whichever came first.
