Warm rivalry: Ian Thorpe, left, greets Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband on the pool deck in Athens. Photo: Craig Golding It was Superman warmly welcoming Spiderman. The two superheroes of the swimming pool made their Olympic meet and greet in Athens on Sunday, not with a snarl and a glare, nor any pathetic psych-out tactic, but a handshake, which even extended to a hug. Michael Phelps may be the rising star - perhaps Marine Boy in the superhero stakes - but the sport's established stars, particularly when it comes to the Olympics, are Ian Thorpe and Pieter van den Hoogenband, who between them won five gold, two silver and two bronze medals in Sydney, and the two warmly embraced as they reacquainted themselves in Athens. Thorpe had just finished his first training session in Greece with the Australian team, when the Dutchman, who has been in Athens since Friday having flown in from a training camp in Como, Italy, arrived at the pool to continue his preparation.

Thorpe celebrates victory in the 200m freestyle at the Athens Olympic Pool. Photo: Craig Golding Regardless of how many gold medals American swimmer Michael Phelps leaves Greece with, Ian Thorpe will head home to Australia with the title of the world's best swimmer after winning the men's 200m freestyle in Athens on Monday night. Thorpe won the event dubbed the 'Race of the Century', in doing so accounting for the sport's biggest names - Phelps, Grant Hackett, and Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband - and showing anyone interested in doubting him, that he is far from past his best in a sport he has dominated since bursting onto the international scene in 1998. The victory also sees the 21-year-old create Australian Olympic history. Combined with the three gold he won in Sydney four years ago, plus the one from the 400m in Athens, and now one from the 200m, Thorpe has five Olympic gold medals, more than any Australian athlete in history.

#53 - The Awesome Power Of The Quiet Achiever
Are you a swimmer who lets your swimming do your talking for you? Do others seem to get more attention because they are louder, whereas you prefer to concentrate on your swimming? Then you share the same attitude with most of the illustrious champions! Swimmers such as Ian Thorpe, Pieter Van den Hoogenband, Inge De Bruijn, Alex Popov, Susie O'Neill and Lenny Krayzelburg all share the same 'quiet achiever' attitude, going about their business of training quietly and efficiently until they unleash their form to the world in the big meets.
Quiet achievers are the most dangerous competitors. If you are a quiet achiever, then everyone else, look out! No-one really knows what you are thinking (or what to expect from you) until you are in the water. You are a 'dark horse' who doesn't let anyone know how confident you are feeling until you unleash your power in the big races.
Quiet achievers are the opposite of the 'big talkers' who constantly tell everyone (who'll listen) how good they are - but never forget that deep down the "talker's" confidence is often quite 'suspect'! Anyone who needs to tell you how good they are is either trying to make THEMSELVES feel better, or else they are feeling intimidated by you and are trying to unsettle you with psychological tactics. This also attracts the much-needed attention which they often crave, as at the deepest level, they often feel the exact opposite of what they are saying.

Are you ready to get wet? Because for the first time in its history, FINA has decided to hold its most important event in North America. It has chosen Montréal to showcase this prestigious competition. For the city, the region, and the entire province, MONTRÉAL 2005 is the largest gathering of young athletes since the 1976 Olympic Games, with 160 countries and over 2,000 trainers.
A great number of stars will be in action this summer in Montreal at the XI Fina World Championships, despite this being a pre-Olympic year.
Michael Phelps and Pieter van den Hoogenband in the swimming events, divers Dmitri Sautin and Chantelle Newbery, the Russian synchronized swimming team and the Hungarian and Italian water-polo teams are expected to offer showcase performances. Spectators coming to Ste-Hélène and Notre-Dame Islands, July 17 to 31 are sure to see a great display of talent. These are only some athletes that will be seen at our own park Jean Drapeau.
These are the roots of the five events that will be in these championships:
SWIMMING:
Three swimming events were part of the program for the first Olympic Games in 1896. There were no rules, no regulations, and universal definitions were not yet established. Some of the events rapidly disappeared, like underwater swimming. For certain races, swimmers were transported by boat into the ocean and had to swim to shore.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - All eyes will again be on the amazing Michael Phelps when the 11th world swimming championships get underway in Montreal this month.
The lanky, hip-hop loving American stole the limelight at last year's Athens Olympics when he scooped up an unprecedented eight medals, including six golds, to confirm his reputation as the world's greatest contemporary swimmer.
His halo slipped when he was busted for drink-driving in November and sentenced to 18 months' probation but his attempt to win another eight medals in Montreal will thrust him back in the spotlight for all the right reasons.
No swimmer has ever won eight medals at a single world championship but few would bet against Phelps becoming the first, particularly in the absence of his great rival Ian Thorpe and the flying Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband.
Thorpe, who won a record six golds at the 2001 world championships in Japan, is taking a year off to recharge his batteries as part of his long-term preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics while van den Hoogenband is recovering from a hernia operation.
They are among a host of top swimmers who have decided to skip this year's championships, either through injury, retirement or just lack of interest in an event being held less than 12 months after Athens.

Two short course world marks were set at the Australian Short Course Championships in Melbourne last month. On Sept. 2, Matt Welsh took the 50 meter backstroke down to 23.31 seconds, erasing Neil Walker's mark of 23.42 set at the 2000 Short Course Worlds in Athens. Two nights later, the Australian foursome of Welsh (back, 50.95), Jim Piper (breast, 59.44), Geoff Huegill (fly, 50.61) and Ashley Callus (free, 47.12) smashed the world record for the 4 x 100 meter medley relay. Their time of 3:28.12 sliced 78-hundredths off the mark set by the American quartet of Aaron Peirsol, Dave Denniston, Peter Marshall and Jason Lezak at the World Short Course championships earlier this year in Moscow.

SYDNEY, Australia (AP)
- American Misty Hyman stunned defending champion Susie O'Neill of Australia to win Olympic gold in the 200-meter butterfly Wednesday. Hyman, a 21-year-old from Phoenix, led all the way to win in an Olympic record 2 minutes, 5.88 seconds, just missing O'Neill's world record by seven one-hundredths of a second. "I've played it over so many times in my head, but I never thought it would come true," said Hyman, who, discouraged by health problems and slow times, was ready to quit swimming in May.
