XI FINA World Championships –Montréal 2005 Media Releases Successful world aquatic championships launches new era in Canadian swimming
MONTREAL- Canada’s swimming team completed the 2005 World Aquatic Championships with five medals- its highest total since the 1986 worlds- and more importantly gained plenty of steam for the next major international events over the next few years. “The team came together this year,” said Mike Brown of Calgary, a silver medallist in the 200 breaststroke on Friday night. “We’re a lot more positive and everybody has just stepped it up. Now we’re moving forward to the future.” Brown says a big factor for Canada’s success included the home crowd support and the great start to the competition last Sunday. That evening the Canadian men’s 4x100 freestyle relay with Yannick Lupien of Quebec City, Rick Say of Victoria and Mike Mintenko and Brent Hayden of Vancouver won the silver medal and Brittany Reimer of Surrey, B.C., was fourth in the 400 freestyle. Both performances were in Canadian record time. “That first day was crucial,” said Brown. “It tells you that our preparation was right and we were ready for this meet. When we saw what Brittany and the relay did we knew we were moving in the right direction and we made the right decisions. That set the tone. The crowd was also phenomenal and they pushed us through a lot of races.”

Eating for Swimmers

An Overview of Swimmers Shoulder
Swim coaches frequently encounter swimmers complaining of pain in one or both of their shoulders. This pain (and its underlying cause) is often associated with swimming freestyle, and seems to occur most often in the swimmer’s anterior shoulder region, but could also occur in other shoulder regions. If the causes of this pain can be addressed, to limit or eliminate the affects of the injury causing the pain, there should be a greater chance for swimmers to train, improve, and compete in their chosen sport.

Shut Your Pie-Hole!
Let the Games Begin By Phardoe
Newcomer Eva Serrano from France scores a complete miss during the Hula-Hoop qualifying rounds (AP Photo/ Victoria Arocho) For over a week now, night after night, I've sat down and watched the Olympics. As I stated last week, I'm a fan of the Games. I've cheered for the Americans, as usual we're kicking ass, and I've cheered for the underdogs. I've yelled for the half blind runners, the deaf swimmers and the athletes who've lost their whole family and had to sleep in a car. I cheered for the wrestler from Wyoming who beat wrestling's equivalent to Michael Jordan. Alexander Karelin had never lost in 13 years of international Greco-Roman competition. He hadn't been scored upon in a decade. But the feared Russian heavyweight is not a four-time Olympic champion American Rulon Gardner's stunning 1-0 Gold medal win Wednesday so mystified Karelin that he gave up with eight seconds left. Gardner had not finished higher than fifth in international meets. I stood up and clapped my hands for Cathy Freeman who is at the games representing not only a country but also an entire impoverished race. But there are still a few things that I find puzzling.

Day 3 Roundup: Thorpe Wins "Race of Century", China Remains Atop Ian Thorpe pipped Michael Phelps in the only head-on-head showdown of the world's top two swimmers as China continued to pile up gold medals in the Athens Olympic Games on Monday. Australian "Thorpedo" beat 2000 champ Pieter van den Hoogenband and much-hyped Phelps in the star-studded men's 200m freestyle final, dubbed as the "race of the century". China geared up to sweep five more golds in shooting, weightlifting, diving and swimming, with the most precious gold from Luo Xuejuan, who swam on lane 1 to triumph in the women's 100m breaststroke final. China perches atop the medal tally with 10 golds and Australia is second with six, followed by Japan on five and the United States three. The American Phelps' bid for a repeat of Mark Spitz' seven-title record ended after just three days, as world record holder Thorpe finished with an Olympic record of one minute and 44.71 seconds.

Former Longhorn wins gold
By Stephanie Berlin and Ryan Killain
Texas' strong tradition in swimming and diving continued to grow at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, this week as 10 Texas swimmers and divers have medaled in this years summer games. Aaron Peirsol has collected two individual gold medals, to add to the total of 12 medals that have been won by current and former Longhorns. Peirsol swept the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke events, becoming only the fifth swimmer to accomplish the feat. Monday he came from behind in the last quarter of the race to take the gold with a time of 54.06 in the 100. In Thursday's 200 backstroke final, an event which Peirsol was heavily favored to win, he was initially disqualified for an "illegal turn." The United States immediately appealed the ruling, and shortly before the medal ceremony he was awarded the gold. His time of 1:54.95 was more than two seconds faster than the silver medalist, Markus Rogan of Austria, and is the new Olympic Record. Peirsol got his first taste of Olympic glory in 2000 when he won silver in the 200 backstroke.

SPORTSLINE Boxing Former World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Volodymyr Klitschko is scheduled to fight on August 30 in Munich, Germany, against Fabio Moli of Argentina. The fight will be the first for Klitschko since his loss to Corrie Sanders of South Africa on March 8. Klitschko, 27, has 40 wins and two losses while the 34-year-old Moli has 29 wins and two losses. "We decided on Moli because he is a big, hard-hitting man," Klitschko's promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl said on July 17, according to the Associated Press. "Volodymyr needs a challenge to regain his confidence in the ring." Meanwhile, Vitalii Klitschko was cleared to box by an independent medical expert on July 22, The New York Times reported recently. His June 21 fight with World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was stopped after a doctor ruled that a cut over Klitschko's left eye obscured the boxer's vision. The decision to clear the elder Klitschko makes the possibility of a rematch with Lewis strong. However, The Times reported on August 5 that Lewis passed up a lucrative December 6 rematch, although the possibility of a rematch between Lewis and Klitschko has not been ruled out and could happen in 2004. "Lennox is taking a good, long, hard look at his career," Lewis's lawyer, Judd Bernstein said on August 4, according to The New York Times. "He's not ready to begin training and felt it was unfair for everyone to hang on to that date."

By Oene Rusticus In 1993, PSV Eindhoven hired Jacco Verhaeren, a young and ambitious coach, to take its regional- and national-level athletes and train them to become more competitive on the international level. AUSSIE world record-holder Ian Thorpe has waited four years for this moment, a chance to turn the tables on his archrival, Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband. On his home waters in Sydney, Thorpe went into this race as world record-holder and a hot favourite only to be ambushed by the flying Dutchman who took the race out hard and left the Aussie in his wake. Tonight Hoogie employed the same strategy again and how! He was under the world record splits for the first three turns: 50: -0.37, 100: -1.03, 150: -0.54, but Thorpe was also under WR pace and just two-tenths of a second behind Hoogie.

NBCSports.com news services ATHENS, Greece - Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands successfully defended his Olympic 100-meter freestyle title Wednesday night. Van den Hoogenband won the gold in 48.17 seconds - 13-hundredths of a second faster than his winning time at the Sydney Games four years ago. Van den Hoogenband's winning time was 48.17, just ahead of South African Ronald Schoeman's 48.23. Australia's Ian Thorpe earned bronze in 48.56, despite swimming in a far outside lane because he had the slowest qualifying time. It was a turnabout of the 200 free, in which Thorpe edged van den Hoogenband for the gold. Schoeman, who trains at the University of Arizona, took silver after leading at the turn for the final 50 meters.

ATHENS, Greece - Ian Thorpe touched the wall, pumped a fist in the air and let out a yell that all but said, "Take that!" Two lanes over, Michael Phelps was draped over the rope, huffing and puffing as he looked at the scoreboard. Phelps' improbable pursuit of Mark Spitz is over, Thorpedoed by the man in black. Thorpe thwarted Phelp's attempt to take home seven gold medals, winning the 200-meter freestyle Monday while the kid from Baltimore was relegated to bronze for the second night in a row - a medal to be savored, for sure, but not the color he needed to catch Spitz. With his long arms churning smoothly, his enormous feet kicking furiously, Thorpe passed Pieter van den Hoogenband in the homestretch, finishing with an Olympic record of 1 minute, 44.71 seconds. The Dutchman's time was 1:45.23 - good enough for silver.
