An Overview of Swimmers Shoulder
Swim coaches frequently encounter swimmers complaining of pain in one or both of their shoulders. This pain (and its underlying cause) is often associated with swimming freestyle, and seems to occur most often in the swimmer’s anterior shoulder region, but could also occur in other shoulder regions. If the causes of this pain can be addressed, to limit or eliminate the affects of the injury causing the pain, there should be a greater chance for swimmers to train, improve, and compete in their chosen sport.

The Common Threads of Successful Swimming Technique
    By Marshall Adams
Introduction Discussions presented in this paper are centered on the importance of the adductor muscles of the shoulder in all competitive strokes. The majority of examples cited are from the crawl stroke and butterfly, but the threads of common factors to success run through every stroke. The paper draws it conclusions from discussions of the core muscles of technique, the nervous system organization that provides the conscious and unconscious control of these muscles, the water that compounds the problem of movement within an unfamiliar medium, and the peculiarities of the shoulder joint that limits our movements. This unique view of human swimming propulsion draws upon principals, when analyzed in their entirety, that have profound implications for swimming instruction. The progression of swimming since the beginning of the modem Olympic era has resulted in a variety of successful techniques performed within the parameters provided by the rules governing each competitive stroke. Much research and analysis has been conducted in order to explain the successes of the techniques used by the most successful swimmers. Yet, the search goes on to find the stroke techniques and scientific explanations that explain why one technique is superior to another. The variables involved with this analysis make the endeavor a difficult task. It is one thing to know the concept such as the potential of the shoulder's third class lever in human motion, but it is difficult to rate this factor, or anyone factor, with all the other variables involved in swimming success.

TWO world records on Day 1. Michael Phelps won his and the US' 1st gold, breaking his own world record by 0.15s in 400m IM, on his way to matching Mark Spitz's 1972 record of 7 golds. Ian Thorpe defended his 400m FS title. For only the second time since 1956, USA was beaten in the women's 4x100m FS relay. Australia romped home with the gold and a new world record (by 0.06s); denying Jenny Thompson her 9th gold. Yana Klochkova (UKR) becomes the first woman to win IM in consecutive Olympics. China sweeps both Sync Diving golds. AUG 15th :: The US disappoints again continuing a slow start to swimming (1 of 8 golds so far). South Africa wins their first gold in Olympic swimming history, thundering to a third WR in swimming by grabbing 400m FS relay simultaneously handing the US their worst showing ever in this event and ending Michael Phelps' quest for a record 8 golds. Last month, Hansen stole Kitajima's WR in 100m BrS but the gold was stolen from him by Kitajima tonight. Laure Manaoudou became the first French woman ever to win an Olympic swimming gold medal and France's second swimming gold ever. AUG 16th :: Thorpe avenges his loss to Hoogenband in the 200m FS in Sydney with a win here in the "Race of the Century". He now has 2 golds in these Games and his 5th career gold, the most by any Australian athlete in history. Phelps took the bronze - his quest to equal Mark Spitz's record is now over. Peirsol and Coughlin redeems America's stature in the pool by winning the 100m BS events. China takes women's 100m BrS gold - their 6th swimming gold ever. China finishes Sync Diving with 3 of 4 golds. Greece wins the other - the first gold for the hometown team - after China's men's pair leading by a large margin crashed to points on their final dive.

    Australia EVENTS
400-m and 4x100-m freestyle; 200-m and 4x200-m freestyle TECHNIQUE Thorpe's ability to accelerate, powered by his size-17 feet, his 193-cm length and the 2.7 m he covers per stroke, just may make the 17-year-old the best swimmer ever Is Ian Thorpe the most technically proficient swimmer of all time? Probably not. Is he the most physically powerful freestyler there has ever been? No again. Surprisingly, he is unimpressive in the gym and hopeless at ball sports. But at 193 cm and 90 kg, with natural buoyancy and a basketballer's feet and hands, he can move water like the moon. His cartoon elasticity, combined with the longest stroke in swimming, makes "Thorpedo" everything his nickname suggests: sleek, smooth, strangely beautiful and, to the competition, lethal. "If you were going to do a Frankenstein," says Brian Sutton, coach of nine Australian Olympians, "if you were going to put a swimmer together from scratch, you'd build Ian Thorpe." He is just 17 years old and has swum the 200 m and 400 m faster than anyone else in history. He fascinates rivals, coaches, sports scientists and fans. In two years, he has become Australia's most admired athlete, ahead of track star Cathy Freeman. While the Aboriginal Freeman is the host nation's only big hope in the main arena, Thorpe spearheads its mightiest swim team in decades. In an island nation, you would expect water sports to be important. They are. Of all the Olympic events, the home fans are savoring a duel in the pool with the Yanks, who don't seem to have an answer for the teenage talisman.

    Double delight for Sydney's best
A majestic Ian Thorpe stood high on the Olympic podium and saluted the crowd after winning the 400m freestyle and the first gold medal for Australia at the Games. Moments later the 17-year-old prodigy found his reserves of energy to swim one of the finest final legs seen in Olympic competition to help his country defeat the Americans in the 4x100m freestyle relay. It was a remarkable achievement on the first day of the pool events as the 17,500 crowd who came to the Homebush Bay indoor centre witnessed a legend in the making. The local boy from Sydney delivered at the right time and at the perfect occasion as he destroyed all who came before him in the mens' 400m freestyle and broke the world record by nearly a second, in a time of 3 minutes 40.59 seconds. Kitted in an all-in-one wetsuit, the 17-year-old stood out from the crowd and never looked like losing the three length lead he established in the opening 25 metres. Thorpe moved almost effortlessly in the pool as the swimmers behind him, led by Massimiliano Rosolino of Italy and Klete Keller of America, tried in vain to make up the difference.

ATHENS, Greece - Ian Thorpe touched the wall, pumped a fist in the air and let out a yell that all but said, "Take that!" Two lanes over, Michael Phelps was draped over the rope, huffing and puffing as he looked at the scoreboard. Phelps' improbable pursuit of Mark Spitz is over, Thorpedoed by the man in black. Thorpe thwarted Phelp's attempt to take home seven gold medals, winning the 200-meter freestyle Monday while the kid from Baltimore was relegated to bronze for the second night in a row - a medal to be savored, for sure, but not the color he needed to catch Spitz. With his long arms churning smoothly, his enormous feet kicking furiously, Thorpe passed Pieter van den Hoogenband in the homestretch, finishing with an Olympic record of 1 minute, 44.71 seconds. The Dutchman's time was 1:45.23 - good enough for silver.

ATHENS, Greece - Ian Thorpe of Australia won a gold medal in the Olympic race he almost didn't get to compete in, edging countryman Grant Hackett in the 400-meter freestyle Saturday night. American Klete Keller won the bronze. Thorpe touched the wall first in 3 minutes, 43.10 seconds, well off his world-record time, but enough to win 400 gold for the second straight Olympics. Hackett took silver in 3:43.35, while Keller, of Phoenix, claimed the bronze with an American record of 3:44.11. The American finished third in the same race four years ago at Sydney. A blow-by-blow guide to Australia's medal-winning events. DAY 1 SWIMMING Men's 400m freestyle - Ian Thorpe Thorpe appeared emotional in the pool as he retained the 400 metres title. Reinstated to the team after falling from the blocks in the trials, Thorpe was cheered on by the man who stepped aside for him, Craig Stevens. Grant Hackett pushed his teammate all the way, but there was no denying Thorpe the gold medal. "The people I swam it for was the person who gave me the opportunity in this race, Craig Stevens, and I was thinking about him, about my coach Tracey Menzies, my family, all of the people that this means something to, and all of the people who have been prepared to support me in the lead-up to this through the tough times." - Ian Thorpe SWIMMING Women's 4x100m freestyle relay - Alice Mills, Lisbeth Lenton, Petria Thomas, Jodie Henry
