Latest: Saturday September 23, 2000 12:51 PM SYDNEY, Australia Clear out the chlorine and dust off the history books. This was a terrific swim meet. World records fell in 13 races, many more than once. The U.S. led all teams in both gold (14) and total (33) medals, handily topping the Australian marks of five and 18. The 18,000-seat Sydney International Aquatic Centre was an ideal setting for the emotion of the week. Here is our list of a half-dozen unforgettable highlights from the swim venue, plus 10 other swimmers who made the meet's unofficial all-star team.
She Dawned on us
Any time you looked over at the group of Australian swimmers who weren't swimming that day but we there to support their teammates, you saw Dawn Fraser leading the cheers. She did not have an official role with the swimmers or at the Games, except to simply be the most beloved figure anywhere she went. After amassing four gold and four silver swimming medals from 1956 to 1964, Fraser took on several roles in which she supported Australian sports, and was even the team manager for water polo at one Olympiad. She represented the Sydney suburb of Balmain in the Australian parliament and was considered the favorite to light the torch at the Games by many observers until

Mai Nakamura was pushed into second
Sixteen-year-old Diana Mocanu of Romania has won the Olympic women's 100 metres backstroke title, snatching the gold from Japan's Mai Nakamura. Nakamura went clear from the start and turned in 29.17 seconds, inside world record schedule. She held her lead till well down the return length when Mocanu shot past to win in one minute 00.21 seconds, an Olympic record. Nakamura had to settle for the silver in 1:00.55, while Russian-born Nina Zhivanevskaya of Spain took the bronze in 1:00.89. Mocanu missed the 1:00.16 world record of China's He Cihong by just 0.05 seconds. Rolph Newcastle's Sue Rolph, the Commonwealth Games 200m individual medley silver medallist, saw her hopes of reaching the Olympic final at the event dashed. The 22-year-old finished sixth in her semi-final in 2:15.98 - around a second outside her best - and wound up 12th overall. An amazing finish gave sixteen-year-old American Megan Quann the women's 100 metres breaststroke gold, ahead of Penny Heyns who faded at the finish.

Other - Lane 9 News - Beard Qualifies First for 200 Breast Final, Just Misses Recapturing World Mark July 11, 2004 By Phillip Whitten LONG BEACH, Calif., July 11. AMANDA Beard made a determined effort to retake her world record in the 200-meter breaststroke in her semifinal heat tonight at the US Olympic trials.. Only two days ago, Aussie Leisel Jones had taken away the mark Beard shared with China’s Qi Hui at 2:22.99 by going three-hundredths of a second faster. Tonight, Beard went out hard, turning halfway in 1:09.69, several hundredths ahead of Jones’ pace. She made the final turn in 1:46.74, the identical time that Jones had recorded half a world away. Unchallenged, Beard gave it her all on the final lap, falling only 36-hundredths of a second short. Still, her 2:23.32 was a US Open and Trials record, and the world’s number two performance of 2004, setting up an anticipated duel in Athens.

A-M-A-N-D-A; Beard Dominates prelims July 11, 2004 By Phillip Whitten LONG BEACH, Calif., July 11. AS the old saying goes, “What a difference a quadrennium makes.” Four years ago, Amanda Beard showed up in Indy, a long shot at best. In 1996, at 14, she had won a gold and two silver medals. But in 2000, adjusting her stroke to her maturing body, she was beginning a comeback. The long shot paid off, as she placed second in 2:26 behind Kristy Kowal. A month later she went on to win bronze (.01 second ahead of China’s Qi Hui) in Sydney, as teammate Kowal took silver. But, oh, what a difference a quadrennium makes.

Huskies swim past competition
UW claims Washington Open with Olympians present
JAMES RAMSEY/The Daily Nison Simontov The Daily The University of Washington men's swimming team lived up to its No. 24 ranking by capturing 10 events at the four-day Washington Open, which concluded yesterday in Federal Way. Washington's men finished first, while the women placed second behind the De Anza Cupertino Aquatics club. The Huskies finished far ahead of the competition in the combined total, amassing 1,399 points. The closest team was the Reno Aquatic Club at 678. On the men's side the Huskies were fired up after their national recognition in the Speedo Coaches' Poll, and it showed in the pool. The men swept the top three spots in the second event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, and never looked back. "I think there's never been a team ranked nationally without a diving team," said senior captain Francis Tam. "It's been so many years since we've been ranked, it's awesome. Since (coach) Mickey Wender came here, we've gotten better and better each year."
