Sri Lanka’s cricket heroes Arjuna Ranatunga and Arvinda de Silva have been cleared of match-fixing charges levelled against them by an Indian bookmaker. Investigator Desmond Fernando, who was appointed by the Sri Lankan Cricket Board to probe the allegations against both cricketers, declared them ‘not guilty’, rejecting the ‘inadequate and untested’ testimony of bookmaker Mukesh Gupta, Sunday Times reported today.

Popov sees off training partner Klim with superb record swim
ALEXANDER POPOV proved himself the master freestyler once again yesterday when he saw off the challenge of young pretender Michael Klim to retain his 100 metres freestyle title at the world swimming championships.
The 26 year-old Russian extended his incomparable record of victories in the classic event of the swimming programme and vanquished training partner Klim, acknowledged his supremacy.
"Today I was beaten by a better man and I have no regrets," the 20 year-old Australian said.Popov, his stroke as smooth and unhurried as ever, led by a fraction down the first length of the 50-metre pool and stretched away on the return to deny 20 year-old Klim's flailing challenge and win in a championship record 48:93 seconds.
The shaven-headed Klim, gold medallist in Monday's 200 freestyle and Tuesday's 4x200 freestyle relay, had to settle for the silver in 49:20, with Sweden's Lars Frolander taking the bronze in 49:53.
Popov has now won two Olympic, two world, and four European championship golds, in the 100 freestyle, prevailing in every major championships he has contested since making his senior bow at the 1991 Europeans in Athens at the age of 19.

Yes. Exciting? No doubt. But never faithful. No way. In the prelims, WR-holder and double Olympic 50 champ Alex Popov was eliminated. So too was two-time 100 free Olympic gold medalist Pieter van den Hoogenband. Bye, bye Alex. Hit the road, Hoogie. It was great knowing you but,...hit the road, jack. The semifinals brought more of the same. Bart Kizierowski, who looked so good in prelims was out. It was "adios" to Ricky Busquets, Fernando Scherer and Javier Noriega; "au revoir" to Fred Busquet.

After a swimming race where US teammates Tom Dolan and Eric Namesnik POPOVI didn’t think how bad — you know, anything which is ahead of Gary is good.
http://www.imagesjournal.com/issue03/features/olympics3.htm
Finding the Pulse of Athletic Human Drama (page 3) A ttractive, telegenic American swimmer Janet Evans, in Atlanta for her third Olympics after winning five gold medals, was perhaps NBC’s favorite female star. The network handpicked Evans, who had "grown up before America’s eyes," to carry the torch during the final lap of the opening ceremony; she passed the flame to the surprise torch-lighter, Muhammad Ali.
Muhammad Ali as Olympic torch-lighter.
Janet Evans during a post-race interview. NBC had great plans for Evans. Her dramatic story revolved around the very last race of her professional career (she announced plans to be a sportscaster, presumably for NBC). The unplanned drama — which only added to the athletic human drama, NBC seemed to think — was that Evans would swim with a broken toe. The tragedy (she whacked the toe on hotel furniture) was repeated incessantly by NBC sportscasters, even after a somewhat embarrassed Evans reminded them that such an injury has little consequence for a long-distance swimmer. Still, NBC was relentless on this point. In a prime-time interview with Evans on July 24, the day before her final Olympic race, Bob Costas waxed sycophantic in order to get more melodramatic mileage out of the swimmer’s taped toe: "Are you trying to be, as you usually are, too classy to cop an excuse, and you don’t want anyone to think that — and this is really going to have an effect, but you just don’t want to say it?"
In profiles of other athletes, we learned that the inspiration for Australian cyclist Kathy Watt is her cyclist father, who died in a freak snowstorm. Watt also overcome an Achilles tendon problem and was up against the most arrogant cyclist in the world, unlikable French star Jeannie Longo. American diver Mary Ellen Clark’s melodramatic "problem" is that she had just overcome vertigo. And American wrestler Dennis Hall was still dealing with his brother’s fatal car accident, which occurred eight years earlier. Most packages consisted of thickly written copy, a few athlete soundbites, music that jogged between serious/tragic and punchy/competitive, and close-up shots that attempted to "get in the mind" of the athlete. In all cases, the more teary-eyed confessionals, the better.

We can’t all be Alex popov or Michael Klim, but we can learn a lot about them Great swimmers are great for many reasons. The six steps to greatness are
http://www.swim.shetland.co.uk/Information/SixStepsToGreatness.htm
Six Steps to Greatness By Wayne Goldsmith Successful swimming is a combination of several factors. Fitness, speed, strength, technique, motivation, skills, a sensible balanced diet and good nutrition, a positive attitude, self confidence and flexibility are all important to swim fast. However, there are six specific factors that have been identified as being essential for peak swimming performance. Over the past five years, the factors that contribute to swimming successfully at top national and international competitions have been systemically and scientifically analysed using a technique called “THE COMPETITION ANALYSIS”. Developed by Australian Institute of Sport Biomechanist Dr Bruce Mason, the Competition Analysis is a process that breaks down racing into it’s various components.
  • Start time – the first 15 metres, (from the starting signal to the time the swimmer’s head crosses the 15-metre mark from the starting wall).
  • Turn time – a distance of 7.5 metres in and out of the wall, (taken from the point where the swimmer’s head passes through a point 7.5 metres from the wall into a turn and continues until the swimmer’s head passes through the same point 7.5 metres from the wall on the way out of the turn).
  • Finish time – the final 5 metres, (from the time the swimmer’s head passes the 5 metre mark from the finish wall to the actual hand touch on the wall).
