Other - Lane 9 News - World Champs, Day 7 Evening Session: Miatke Sprints to Victory in 50 Butterfly July 30, 2005 By John Lohn Photos by Peter H. Bick Sweden’s Anna-Karin Kammerling, the world-record holder at 25.57, collected the silver medal with a swim of 26.36. The medal finish marked the third consecutive for the sprint sensation, as she was the bronze-medal winner at the World Champs in 2001 and 2003. Kammerling was followed to the wall by her countrywoman, Therese Alshammar, who registered a time of 26.39. Austria’s Fabienne Nadarajah touched the wall in fourth place (26.50) and Germany’s Antje Buschschulte took fifth with a swim of 26.55. Buschschulte has already won silver in the 100 backstroke and bronze in the 50 back. American Natalie Coughlin, the silver medalist in the 100 free, placed sixth with an effort of 26.63. The seventh and eighth positions went to the Netherlands’ Inge Dekker (26.93) and New Zealand’s Elizabeth Coster (27.23).

    'Madame Butterfly' has American accent
    By Steve Wilstein
    Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia Her round cheeks glowing, her blue eyes sparkling, Misty Dawn Hyman popped out of the water so full of joy and so thoroughly stunned that she had to look at the scoreboard three times to make sure she won. Misty Hyman talked about leaving the sport in May. Now she has a gold medal and an Olympic record. "Oh, my God! I don't believe it," she said over and over Wednesday as she saw her time, 2 minutes, 5.88 seconds, an Olympic record in the 200-meter butterfly, and her name ahead of Susie O'Neill, Australia's "Madame Butterfly," the defending Olympic champion and world record holder. No one could believe it. Not Hyman, who was so filled with self-doubt that she almost quit swimming in May. Certainly not O'Neill, who wore a pained expression at the medals ceremony, as if she were being given ashes and coal instead of flowers and silver. Hyman couldn't stop beaming, even as she sang the "Star-Spangled Banner" with her hand on her heart and the gold medal dangling from a blue ribbon around her neck. In the middle of the song, she just had to throw back her head, shake her long honey-colored hair and take a deep, deep breath.

One of the strongest swimming teams in Australian Olympic history touched down in Athens on Sunday amid tight security. The 42-strong unit has been tipped to deliver more than a third of Australia's medals at the Games. Leading website Swiminfo.com has predicted Australia to win eight gold, eight silver and two bronze medals in the pool - more than the 1956 team dubbed the nation's greatest. The team's chartered flight flew into the Olympic city today from their pre-Games training camp in Germany. Team boss John Coates said the arrival of the swimmers would further boost morale within the Australian contingent. He said other members of the Olympic team regarded Australia's leading swimmers as heroes. "I think they are also heroes for other Australians team members, there is no doubt about that," Coates told reporters in Athens earlier today.

Susie O'Neill (centre) may opt for a life away from swimming
Australia's Susie O'Neill may retire from swimming in order to concentrate on her marriage. The swimmer, who took the 200m freestyle gold at the Sydney Olympics but lost the 200m butterfly to America's Misty Hyman, says that the need for her to train constantly and spend time away from home in order to remain at the top of her game may force the issue. O'Neill will go on a surf safari with husband Cliff Fairley to consider her sporting future. "He is saying retirement definitely. I don't think he wants me to keep swimming," said O'Neill. "Swimming always came first - even before Cliff - over the last couple of years so it would be nice to reverse that a bit." O'Neill, 27, said the pressures of professional sports forced a selfishness that could strain marriages. "It's hard on the relationship when you're an elite athlete, especially when you're living in different cities," she said.

Flying: Petria Thomas in the 200m butterfly at Athens. Photo: Tim Clayton For more than the first half of her swimming career, Petria Thomas swam in the rather lengthy shadow cast by Susie O'Neill. In Atlanta in 1996, Thomas won the silver in the 200m butterfly, O'Neill the gold. In Sydney four years later, Thomas won bronze, O'Neill silver. O'Neill was Madame Butterfly, our golden girl, and Thomas merely a supporting cast member. But since O'Neill retired in 2000, Thomas has emerged from the cocoon to become the star of the Australian women's swimming team. "Obviously a lot of people talk about me living in Susie's shadow, and I did so, and rightly so," Thomas said after capturing her third medal - a silver to go with two gold - in the 200m butterfly on Wednesday night. "Susie was a great champion and she had her time, and I think I learnt a lot from how she swam and how consistent she was over the years," she said.

Hyman, Van den Hoogenband win gold
    Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia Misty Hyman sank Madame Butterfly. Hyman, a 21-year-old from Phoenix, stunned defending champion Susie O'Neill of Australia to win the 200-meter butterfly Wednesday in front of a raucous Aussie crowd at the Olympic pool. "I had to look three times, I really did," Hyman said. "Then I started screaming and shaking." Pieter van den Hoogenband won his second gold medal Wednesday. Hyman led all the way to win in an Olympic record 2 minutes, 5.88 seconds, just missing O'Neill's world record by seven one-hundredths of a second. "I've played it over so many times in my head, but I never thought it would come true," said Hyman, who, discouraged by health problems and slow times, was ready to quit swimming in May. In her signature race, O'Neill finished second in 2:06.58. Petria Thomas of Australia took bronze in 2:07.12. O'Neill, known as "Madame Butterfly," broke the oldest record in swimming in May at the Australian Olympic trials when she lowered Mary T. Meagher's 19-year-old world record.
