RED RAIDER WOMEN AND MEN SWIM TO A WIN AND A LOSS AT LAFAYETTE Easton, Pa. - With two first-place dives by first-year Alissa Bell, the Colgate University women's swimming and diving team ended today's meet with Lafayette with a 126-114 victory. Bell scored 191.325 in the 1M dive, and 228.75 in the 3M. On the racing end, sophomore Emily Pearson finished first in the 1000-free (10:53.99), freshman Alice Garnett touched the wall first in the 500-free (5:14.79), sophomore Elizabeth Gaffuri won the 200-back (2:10.74), and freshman Kate Harden (2:35.43), sophomore Kate Martin (2:35.93) and junior Kendall Gonsalves (2:37.37) swept the top three spots in the 200-breast. Also, the 400-medley relay of Garnett, junior Andrea Weiler, sophomore Meredith Erickson, and Gaffuri won in 4:09.88, and in the 400-free, Erickson, freshman Kate Smith, Garnett and Gaffuri won in 3:42.03 The men's team fell short of a win, 137-106. Once again, the divers were a strong presence, with sophomore John Wutz taking first place in the 1M dive (213.325) and classmate Charles Rathkopf winning the 3M (216.375). Sophomore James Hadley won the 50-free (22.51) and the 100-free (49.32), while senior tri-captain Jeff Cowan went the distance in the 1000-free to take home the gold (10:25.79). In addition, the 400-medley relay team of freshman Mike Schierhold, sophomore Matthew Vuturo, Hadley and freshman Sasha Barausky beat two Lafayette quartets for the win in that category (3:41.24). The swimming and diving team with be back in the pool this Saturday, January 20th, at Lineberry Natatorium when they host Patriot League rival Bucknell at 1 pm.

With the withdrawal of the city of Wellington (New Zealand) in March, Melbourne is the sole contender for the 2006 Games. Thomas, who was inducted into the AIS Swimming Hall of Fame in 1996, emerged from the shadow of retired Australian swimming champion Susie O'Neill last year to become the world's number-one butterfly swimmer. The 26-year-old won three gold medals at each of the World, Australian Short Course and National Championships. It was also an outstanding year for Rizzo, who created history at the 2001 World Championships in Belgium by becoming the first Australian gymnast to win a world championship medal. Rizzo scored an incredible 9.725 on the high bars to win silver. He also won gold medals at the World Student Games and the Goodwill Games. The Australian Women's Rowing Four, comprising four AIS scholarship holders, was named Team of the Year. In an outstanding performance, the crew of Jane Robinson, Victoria Roberts, Julia Wilson and Joanna Lutz not only won gold in the Women's Fours at the World Championships in Switzerland, but the same four rowers were also part of the victorious Australian Women's Eight. Representing Senator Kemp at the AIS awards ceremony, the Member for Eden-Monaro, Mr Gary Nairn, said 2001 had been an exceptional year for the AIS.

Transcript Australian team on track for greatest Games of all KERRY O'BRIEN: Australia has always prided itself on fighting above its weight, but never has there been so much public confidence expressed by officials. If that sentiment is justified then the Aussie team is headed for an unprecedented bonanza of medals. The official target is to finish in the top five teams in the world not bad for a nation of 19 million, if they can do it. But Australians aren't so jingoistic that they'll be blind to the efforts of the rest of the world's best. Aussies love a winner, hometown or otherwise. Sean Murphy previews the highlights. SEAN MURPHY: The world is holding its breath for the Millennium Games. And from tomorrow, swimming is set to dominate the first week of the planet's biggest sporting festival. GERRY COLLINS, ABC RADIO COMMENTATOR: Ian Thorpe is just so far ahead of the rest of the world that he could swim three or four or five seconds outside his best time and still win it by a couple of seconds. 2004-05 MHSAA Scholar Athlete Applicants The following is a preliminary list of 2004-05 Scholar Athlete Award applicants, sorted by school. School administrators must notify the MHSAA in writing by January 19, 2005, regarding corrections to names/schools on this list. Faxes will be accepted. All finalists will receive written notification by January 21. This information will be sent to the building athletic director. Scholarship recipients will receive a set a forms which must be filled out and sent to the MHSAA along with one (1) photograph for publication purposes. All other finalists will be informed of their status and will also be required to submit one (1) photo. Schools are asked to keep their applicants and their parents informed about the announcement schedule.
