CSI HomePage What's New Just for Athletes 2000 United States Aquatic Sports Convention A Report by Brian Carey As the Junior Athlete’s representative of the Connecticut LSC (Local Swimming Committee), I had the privilege of attending the 2000 United States Aquatic Sports Convention in Orlando, Florida, from the 10 th to the 15 th of October. Coming into this convention I had no clue what to expect. The only thing that I knew for sure was that my flight was leaving from New York’s LaGuardia Airport on the 10 th at 7:55 PM. However, this sole certainty of my trip didn’t end up they way I thought it would be, as my flight was delayed to around 9:30 PM. I, along with Lauren Taft (Senior Athlete’s Representative from Wilton), and Mrs. Mary Lynch (one of Connecticut’s non-athlete representatives) sat in LaGuardia’s Delta Terminal waiting for the airplane to arrive. Finally, we boarded the plane and flew south to Orlando International Airport. We reached the airport at around 12, and by the time we had picked up our luggage and got on the shuttle to our hotel (the Hyatt Orlando) it was after 1 am. Lauren, Mrs. Lynch and I, checked into our rooms and got some much needed sleep. The next morning I was awoken a little after 7 by my roommates, Mr. Clark Cooper (Connecticut Administrative Vice-Chair) and Mr. Ken Block (Connecticut’s Age-Group Committee chairman). After preparing for the day, I headed over to the convention center to the registration booth where I was give my credentials and my nametag for the week. I then headed to a First Timers Meeting, a meeting that introduced me to the format of the convention and which allowed me to meet some of my fellow athlete delegates. Following the meeting, I met with my coach, Ms. Ellen Johnston, who was serving on the USA Swimming Senior Swimming Committee, and we had a nice buffet breakfast. Only after the breakfast did Ellen inform me that the man who was sitting in the table to the left of ours was Jeff Rouse, the former 100 Backstroke World and American record holder (those records are now held by Lenny Krazyelburg, who later in the week was awarded Swimmer of the Year by USA Swimming).

Swimming and diving produce worst finish since 1986, win no titles

Daily Sports Writer AUBURN, Ala. - Alabama highway commissioner Jimmy Butts makes sure every border has a welcome center/rest stop - southerners are famous for their hospitality, of course. But the sight of prisoners in coveralls stamped 'Alabama Department of Corrections' landscaping the sun-dappled oases off of Alabama's pine-lined highways is a little jarring. Not quite what you'd expect, but fitting for Michigan at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships this past weekend. Things just didn't go as expected for the seventh-ranked Wolverines, as they finished "lower than a frog's ass." At least, that was how Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek put into words Michigan's 12th-place finish in the 36-team meet. The Wolverines hadn

The Michigan men's swimming and diving team finished a disappointing 12th at the NCAA Championships. 't finished out of the top 10 since their 25th-place showing in 1986. Michigan's 134 points put them well behind champion Stanford's 599 points. Michigan's goal all season had been to break into the top four at nationals. The Wolverines reasoned that Stanford, Auburn - the defending champion and host - and Texas would be too tough to crack. But the list of the other teams they found just as hard to break was as long as Mike McWha's face after the Wolverines placed ninth in the 800-yard freestyle. It is Michigan's bread-and-butter, having won the title in the event five years in a row.

Wolverines ready for 'cocky' Stanford

Daily Sports Writer This time of year, some things aren't as inevitable as they normally would seem. Spring doesn't always bring warm weather. Billy Crystal won't always host the Oscars. But as long as the men's swimming NCAA Championships are on the horizon, you can bet Stanford is in the hunt. Stanford won the Championships last year and appears on the threshold of yet another one. The Cardinal carries the No. 1 national ranking into the season's final meet, which begins today in Auburn, Ala. "Right now Stanford is the Mecca for good swimming," Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek said. "They have a fab-five every year - usually the top five recruits end up at Stanford."
JOHN KRAFT/Daily
Ten Michigan men's swimmers, including junior Tom Malchow, and one diver start competition in Auburn, Ala., today. Competition starts at 11 this morning and continues through Saturday. As if that's not enough, agents in the national capital are probably calling Stanford the "First Team" - as in the favorite hangout of the "First Lady's" daughter. According to Michigan junior Tom Malchow, Stanford's most popular freshman, Chelsea Clinton, is dating Cardinal swimmer Anthony Robinson. So it's no wonder other top-notch swimming teams bristle at the mention of Stanford. They're sick and tired of hearing about the Cardinal legacy - especially from the Cardinal swimmers themselves.
