Panther swimmers remain undefeated for the season
Posted: 2/1/02 by Todd Abeln Sports Editor The Lakeville swim team continued its undefeated season with a convincing 97-81 victory against Rosemount. In its meet against the Irish, Lakeville set many personal best times and looks to claim the Lake Conference title. Eden Prairie is also undefeated in the conference. The two meet this weekend to find out who has the better team. “We were happy with the meet,” head coach Dan Schneider said. “We’re doing well and progressing along nicely.” Scott Wetzel won two individual races and one relay race. He set personal best times in both the 200 and 500 freestyle. In the 200 freestyle, he had a time of 1:55.24. In the 500 free, he finished in 5:10.75. Wetzel teamed up with Chris Mattox, Kevin Blendermann and Will Cummings to capture the 200 freestyle relay title. They had a time of 1:34.75.

SPORTSLINE Boxing Former World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Volodymyr Klitschko is scheduled to fight on August 30 in Munich, Germany, against Fabio Moli of Argentina. The fight will be the first for Klitschko since his loss to Corrie Sanders of South Africa on March 8. Klitschko, 27, has 40 wins and two losses while the 34-year-old Moli has 29 wins and two losses. "We decided on Moli because he is a big, hard-hitting man," Klitschko's promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl said on July 17, according to the Associated Press. "Volodymyr needs a challenge to regain his confidence in the ring." Meanwhile, Vitalii Klitschko was cleared to box by an independent medical expert on July 22, The New York Times reported recently. His June 21 fight with World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was stopped after a doctor ruled that a cut over Klitschko's left eye obscured the boxer's vision. The decision to clear the elder Klitschko makes the possibility of a rematch with Lewis strong. However, The Times reported on August 5 that Lewis passed up a lucrative December 6 rematch, although the possibility of a rematch between Lewis and Klitschko has not been ruled out and could happen in 2004. "Lennox is taking a good, long, hard look at his career," Lewis's lawyer, Judd Bernstein said on August 4, according to The New York Times. "He's not ready to begin training and felt it was unfair for everyone to hang on to that date."

Whether fans are screaming in the crowded bleachers at a high school football game or huddled around the television set watching the Stanley Cup finals, having a home team to cheer for and identify with makes the game that much better. The Olympics allows us to do this on a larger scale: our country becomes the home team. This year, though, residents of "the Land of 10,000 Lakes" have an added bonus - 16 athletes with Minnesota ties are competing in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Here's an overview of some of them: Kris Kuehl Track and field; Discus thrower A former Concordia-Moorhead college student, Kris Kuehl stood out amongst other discus throwers in the sometimes-forgotten world of Division III athletics. This Minneapolis resident won a bronze medal in the 1995 Pan American Games and went to the Olympic trials for the Atlanta games. Many were surprised, however, when she fouled on all three of her preliminary throws.

Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia Spurred by rousing cheers of "Thorpey! Thorpey!," Ian Thorpe gave the Australians a huge lead as they set the world record in winning the Olympic 800-meter freestyle relay Tuesday. The Australian men's 4x200 relay team celebrated Tuesday after winning gold in a world-record 7:07.05. It was the Aussies' second men's relay victory over the Americans, who narrowly lost to the host country in the 400 free relay last weekend. Tom Malchow, however, gave the U.S. team reason to celebrate by winning the 200 butterfly and lowering his own Olympic record for the third time in two days. His victory gave the Americans their sixth swimming gold medal in four days. The Aussie team of Thorpe, Michael Klim, Todd Pearson and William Kirby won in 7 minutes, 7.05 seconds lowering Australia's world mark of 7:08.79 set in August 1999. Australian officials said Thorpe would swim the 400 medley relay, with heats beinning on Friday. That means Thorpe gets another chance to add to the three golds and the silver he's already won at his first Olympics.

American teen breaks own world record in butterfly
By The Associated Press FUKUOKA, Japan American teen-ager Michael Phelps broke his own world record in the 200-meter butterfly, winning the gold medal at the world championships Tuesday in 1 minute, 54.58 seconds. Olympic champion Tom Malchow of the United States won the silver medal in 1:55.28. He held the world record until Phelps lowered the mark to 1:54.92 at the U.S. trials at the Jamail Swim Center in Austin on March 30. Anatoli Poliakov of Russia took the bronze in 1:55.68. Phelps led at the first turn and was below world-record pace for the last 160 meters. He was 0.83 under on his 50-meter split and 0.33 under at the final turn before powering down the final lap to cut 0.34 off his previous record. "I feel great it's hard to explain," Phelps said. "I was a little disappointed after (the semifinals), so I just tried to get my hand on the wall first."
