Freestyles, relays lift Auburn in I men's swimming
Auburn proved that the shortest distance between two points is a freestyle sprint. That and dominance in the relay events propelled the Tigers to their first team title at the Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 27-29 at Minnesota. Scoring 111 points in the two freestyle sprints and winning four of the five relays, the Tigers built an early lead and cruised to a convincing victory after finishing second last year. Sparked by freshman Brett Hawke's upset victory over favored Neil Walker of Texas in the 50-yard freestyle, Auburn scored 173 points during the first day. Walker had set a meet record in the preliminaries, but Hawke touched the wall in 19.19 seconds in the final, .06 ahead of Walker. Auburn placed five other swimmers in the event and added 51 points to its team total. The Tigers also won both relays the first day, including the 400-yard medley relay, in which they set a pool record. Although Lars Frolander of Southern Methodist won the 100-yard freestyle (his second win of the meet), Auburn's Nick Shackell placed second, Brock Newman third, Scott Tucker fifth and Hawke sixth in compiling 60 points for the event. Auburn had won just one relay before this year the 400-yard freestyle relay in 1996 but won all but one of this year's relay events, including a successful defense of its 400 freestyle title. In all, Auburn scored 305 of its 4961/2 total points in the five relays and two freestyle sprints.

Back to Main Hansen and Crocker selected to compete at the Pan Pacific Championships
AUSTIN, Texas University of Texas juniors Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine/Cheverus Jesuit Prep) and Branden Hansen (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), both owners of American and NCAA records, were selected to compete for the United States at the Pan Pacific Championships in Vokohama, Japan, from August 24-29. Crocker and Hansen earned spots on the 26-man roster after both won gold and silver medals earlier this month at the Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships (8/12-17).
Crocker, a 2000 Olympic gold medalist, earned a berth to his second Pan Pacific Championships after claiming a gold and two silver medals at the Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships. Crocker teamed with Hansen and former Longhorns and Olympic gold medalists Nate Dusing and Neil Walker to win a gold medal in the 400-meter medley relay, while adding silver medals in the 100-meter butterfly and the 400-meter freestyle relay.
Meanwhile, Hansen, who will be competing for the first time at the Pan Pacific Championships, became a two-time champion at the Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships earlier this year. Hansen's first-place performances occurred in the 200-meter breaststroke and the 400-meter medley relay, while he also added a runner-up finish in the 100-meter breaststroke.
