Greg Louganis
By Jesse Monteagudo
I f Breaking the Surface was not the best-selling gay book of all time, it was certainly the biggest moneymaker for Fort Lauderdale's Outbooks , which sold over 1600 copies. Outbooks , they knew that they'd accomplished a coup. But even they could not foresee that a mostly-gay crowd of nearly a thousand would descend upon the Hall of Fame to meet Louganis and to (oh joy!) buy a copy of his book. Those who missed Louganis were told that for the diver planned to return to Fort Lauderdale that year as Grand Marshall of the South Florida Pride March. On a national level, Louganis' book topped the New York Times bestseller list for several weeks. Previous People Features from the GayToday Archive:

GayToday does not endorse related sites. There are several reasons why Breaking the Surface had such a huge success. The first reason was Greg Louganis himself, a bona fide athletic hero and cult superstar. A four-time Olympic gold medallist, Louganis is undoubtedly the greatest diver who ever lived.

Olympic Diver Louganis Reveals That He Has AIDS; Sports: The gold medalist says in a TV interview that he has had the virus since before the Seoul Games in 1988. The Times Mirror Company; Los Angeles Times - February 23, 1995, Thursday, Home Edition PAGE: A-1 TYPE: Profile
John Weyler; Times Staff Writer Greg Louganis, considered the greatest competitive diver ever after becoming the only man to win gold medals in platform and springboard events at consecutive Olympics, revealed that he has AIDS in a television interview that will be broadcast Friday. Louganis, 35, who won four gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics, retired from the sport in 1988 and has been pursuing an acting career. He disclosed his homosexuality at the Gay Games in New York last summer. In a transcript of the ABC "20/20" interview released Wednesday, Louganis said that "according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) standards of AIDS versus HIV, I do have AIDS," and that he tested positive for the AIDS virus six months before the 1988 Games in Seoul after discovering that a former companion was dying of AIDS. During preliminaries of the springboard competition, Louganis hit his head on the board while performing a complicated dive and began bleeding. A U.S. Olympic Committee doctor, who was unaware of Louganis' condition and did not wear protective gloves, closed the two-inch gash with five stitches.

Royal Oak's Fearsome Foursome

High school divers make quite a splash at league meet
Forget about the cheesy television show where people eat slugs and dive from the Empire State Building with a rubber band as a bungee chord. That program is about fear, stupidity and greed. Don't forget, a big wad of cash awaits the person who can devour the most road kill! Legitimate fear, the stuff that every beginning diver must conquer and even experienced divers must keep at bay, is part of the everyday job description. Fear of the unknown that comes with twisting and turning in mid-air when suddenly up is down and down is up and disorientation can rule the moment. Fear of smacking the board. Fear of hellacious belly smacker. Fear of a thunderous back smacker. "Fear is definitely part of it," said Ali O'Hara, a junior on the Royal Oak swimming and diving team. "Last year was my first diving, and they called me fearless. They would tell me to do something, and I would just do it. This year, for some reason, I am not so fearless." She laughed, and there is plenty to smile about for O'Hara and her three fellow divers who are members of the combined Royal Oak swimming and diving team coached by Michelle Kielpinski.

Louganis never lost drive to dive

"When my cousin told me that I was HIV positive, it's one of those things when you get the information, it's a ringing in your head, and you can't hear anything. A real hollow feeling. And I wasn't sure what I was going to do," says Greg Louganis on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. To pick one athlete as the greatest ever in his or her sport is a good way to start an argument. But maybe not in every sport. Greg Louganis, who is of Samoan descent, won the gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Try thinking of anyone who was a better diver than Greg Louganis. Pat McCormick? Like Louganis, she doubled with gold medals in the springboard and the platform in successive Olympics. Klaus Dibiasi? Like Louganis, he won five Olympic medals. But McCormick and Dibiasi were not as dominant as Louganis. Not just in their time. For all-time. In 1984, he became the first to register 700 points in platform diving under the current scoring system. Only the 1980 American boycott of the Moscow Games prevented Louganis from piling more gold onto his Olympic resume. Even when he hit his head on the springboard executing a dive in 1988, Louganis still won an Olympic championship.
