Do's
  • Do know the water depth before you dive. Do plan your dive path. Do be sure there are no submerged obstacles or surface objects. Do hold your head up, arms up, and steer up with your hands. Do keep arms extended and head and hands up during the dive. Do practice carefully before you dive in. Do swim and dive with a "buddy." Do test the diving board for its spring before using. Do remember that when you dive down, you must steer up. Do keep your dives simple.
Don'ts
  • Don't dive into an aboveground pool or into the shallow end of a pool. Nine of ten diving injuries occur in six feet of water or less. Don't dive off the side of a diving board - dive straight ahead. Don't dive from the edge across the narrow part of a pool without having at least 25 feet of clear dive path in front of you. Don't run and dive. That can give you the same impact as a dive from a board.

Seoul's water champions, such as Janet Evans and Greg Louganis
BY JOHN SKOW
He was 8 points ahead of Tan Liangde of China, which was about where you would expect Greg Louganis to be after eight dives in the springboard preliminaries. This is something like saying the sun was where you expected it to be at noon. Next up was a moderately difficult reverse somersault that he was accustomed to nailing for 8s and 9s, but this time it went wrong. He jumped almost straight up instead of up and out, spun too close to the board, cracked his head on the board's edge as he rotated backward, and wobbled raggedly into the water. It was the melodrama of the Seoul competition's opening week, and the message of this first act was ''He's human after all.'' The second act, soon to come, seemed to prove what many had thought all along: ''No, he's not.'' There was plenty of drama in another tank a couple of subway stops away as swimming began to churn, but what we saw most vividly at first was not theater; it was a delightful geography lesson. True, the powerful East German women's team won three of the first four golds and did not stop there. Cheeky, frail-looking Janet Evans of the U.S., a 17-year-old whose nonexistent muscle mass offers no visible means of propulsion, easily took the fourth gold in the 400-meter individual medley, as form said she would. She went on to shock East Germany's imposing Heike Friedrich, accelerating astonishingly in the last 50 meters of the 400 freestyle, to break her own world record by 1.6 sec. with a 4:03.85. But the first four women's silvers went to two Chinese, a Costa Rican and a Rumanian, while a French gamine named Catherine Plewinski was a tick away with a bronze in the 100 free. The once-every-four-years fan wonders, When did all these people learn to swim?

But as with every other sport, injuries can spoil the fun for everyone. So get the most pleasure from diving and to avoid serious injuries, don't take needless risks. And learn some basic rules for safe diving."-Greg Louganis Think Ahead Once you've started your dive, you don't have time to think. Know the depth of the water. Plan your dive path. Never dive where you don't know water depth or where there may be hidden obstructions. Steer Up When you dive down, you must be ready to steer up. As you enter the water, your arms must be extended over your head, hands flat and aiming up. Hold your head up and arch your back. This way, your whole body helps you steer up, away from the bottom. Plan a shallow dive, immediately steering up. Don't try to the straight vertical-entry dives you see in competition. These dives take a long time to slow down and must be done only after careful training and in pools designed for competitive diving.

Sammy Lee at the 1952 Olympics.
On August 1, 1920 in Fresno, CA, a legendary sports figure was born. Dr. Sammy Lee, the son of Korean immigrants, would grow up to be the first Asian-American to win an Olympic gold medal for the U.S. and the first man to win back-to-back gold medals in Olympic platform diving. He initially dreamed of going to the Olympics in 1932, when the Summer Games were held in Los Angeles. As he recalled, "I used to go to the produce market on San Pedro Street in Los Angeles. When we came through that tunnel that used to be the Broadway Tunnel, coming into the great metropolis of Los Angeles, all these flags of various countries were on it. And I asked my father, 'What are all these flags?' He said, 'They're having the Olympic games.' And I said, 'Well, what is that?' He said, 'That's where they crown the greatest athletes in the world.' And I'll never forget the chill that went up and down my spine. I said, 'Papa, someday I'm going to be an Olympic champ.'" That summer, as he was doing front and back somersaults at the pool, Hart Crumb, an African-American boy, offered to teach him the forward one-half somersault. Afterwards, he ran home and declared to his father that he would be an Olympic champ in diving.

The number of countries participating in the Olympic Games rocketed in Seoul. But before the Games, there were widespread mass demonstrations in South Korea. Some flaws in the organization and excessive partiality of the referees and spectators led to protests. The September 1981 IOC designation of Seoul as host of the Games caused a stir among several countries - notably the Soviet Union and her satellite countries, who had no diplomatic relations with the Koreans.

(USA) Greg Louganis is the only male diver ever to retain both the Olympic platform and springboard titles - in 1984 and 1988 - and the only diver to win three successive world platform crowns. In 1984 he became the first diver to win both titles at the same Games since 1928 and the first ever to score more than 700 points. He might have enjoyed three successive Olympic triumphs had it not been for the boycott of 1980. His skill was spectacular. Sammy Lee, Olympic diving champion in 1948 and 1952 said of Louganis: "When I first watched him I said to myself 'My God, that's the greatest talent I've ever seen." Judges thought so too, while scribes described him as the Baryshnikov of diving, the execution of his talent both athletic and aesthetic. When Louganis was asked what he most closely resembled, he pondered before opting for "a panther". His achievements compensated for a the disadvantages and prejudices he faced in life. At nine months of age, Louganis, the son of a Samoan father and European mother, both of whom were just 15 when they became parents, was adopted by a Californian couple. Named Gregory Efthimios Louganis by his adoptive parents, the diver showed athleticism from a young age and loved to perform before an audience. He had dance and tap lessons and took part in shows.

b. Jan. 29, 1960, San Diego, CA
Other Resources Unquestionably the greatest diver in history, Louganis was virtually unbeatable for nearly a decade. Of Samoan and Swedish ancestry, he was given up for adoption by his teen-aged mother and he had a difficult childhood. Called "nigger" by classmates because of his dark skin and "retarded" because he suffered from dyslexia, he turned to drugs and alcohol in his early teens. Diving became his outlet because he could practice in solitude. Sammy Lee , twice a gold medalist, coached Louganis for six months in 1976, when the youngster won a silver medal in the Olympic platform event. Louganis emerged as a premier diver in 1978, winning the world platform championship and the AAU indoor 1-meter and 3-meter titles. He entered the University of Miami in Florida that year but transferred to the University of California-Irvine in 1981. In 1979, Louganis won gold medals in both the springboard and the platform at the Pan-American games. He was favored to win the double at the 1980 Olympics, but the U. S. boycott of the Russian games forestalled him. Louganis did win both events at the 1982 world championships. Louganis in 1984 became the first male diver to win both gold medals since 1928, and he was voted the Sullivan Award as the country's amateur athlete of the year. He repeated as a double winner in the 1986 worlds, the 1987 Pan-American Games, and the 1988 Olympics, despite suffering a severe gash in his head after hitting the board on his ninth dive in the Olympic platform event.

Louganis never lost drive to dive
By Ron Flatter

Special to ESPN.com
To pick one athlete as the greatest ever in his or her sport is a good way to start an argument. But maybe not in every sport. Try thinking of anyone who was a better diver than Greg Louganis. As a troubled youth, Greg Louganis used diving as an escape. He found peace at the top of the ladder. Pat McCormick? Like Louganis, she doubled with gold medals in the springboard and the platform in successive Olympics. Klaus Dibiasi? Like Louganis, he won five Olympic medals. But McCormick and Dibiasi were not as dominant as Louganis. Not just in their time. For all-time. The first to amass 700 points in a diving competition under the current scoring system, Louganis is still the only one who has accomplished that in the Olympics. By the time anyone has a chance of matching that feat, 16 years will have passed since he first did it in 1984. That dive also caused him some concern for another reason. At the time, Louganis secretly knew he was HIV-positive. If he had bled into the pool which he did not could Louganis have spread the AIDS virus to another competitor? Although doctors agreed the odds of that happening were minute, Louganis later said, "It must seem irresponsible now, but I hadn't considered the possibility that I could injure myself in that way." By 1994, Louganis had publicly acknowledged his homosexuality, and in 1995, his autobiography "Breaking the Surface" became a best-seller shortly after he told Barbara Walters on national television he was suffering from full-blown AIDS.

Dec. 2002 The rare sport of diving enjoyed a terrific showing of talented athletes at Gay Games VI in Sydney. On the same platform where David Pichler competed as one of over 20 out lesbian and gay athletes in the 2000 Olympics, dozens of lesser known yet still talented athletes took the plunge. Derek Douglas competed in solo and synchronized diving with Mike Schuerger from Chicago, with whom he dived at US Masters events. Born in Denver, Douglas grew up in Bay Area, and started diving in high school in Walnut Creek. He now lives in Berkeley and works for Hero Design firm. Like many school athletes, he stopped in 1987, after a successful college diving career. "It's hard to get yourself to a job and a pool, and have a life," he said. With a back injury canceling his plans to compete at New York's Games IV, and the last-minute indecision by Dutch hosts of Gay Games V leaving most divers absent, the honor of diving at the 2000 Olympic Stadium offered Douglas a chance to shine on the platform in Sydney last month.
