Diver's Degree Of Difficulty Was Outside The Pool
By JERE LONGMAN
June 19, 2000
The Associated Press There was no public pool in his hometown in Puerto Rico, so Mark Ruiz began his diving career as furtively as a spy, stealing out of the house to jump from tree branches and ropes into a river. Sometimes, his mother would sneak him into hotel pools, where at least the water was clear, even if the coast was not. "Sometimes they would turn us back," Lydia Torres said, adding that the lifeguards came to recognize her son. "He used to entertain the tourists. There was a hotel, and they had a 3-meter springboard. Mark would go up and jump he was 3 or 4 years old and the people used to watch. He wasn't into swimming, or trying to cross the pool. He only wanted to jump." Eight years ago, Ruiz and his mother moved to Orlando, Fla., to pursue his diving career, and now, at 21, he represents the best hope for a medal by an American at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. The Olympic trials begin tomorrow in Federal Way, Wash., where Ruiz is favored to win the 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform competitions. If he wins a medal in Sydney, he will dedicate it to his mother, whose uncommon sacrifice and perseverance have given personal resonance to the familiar diving term, degree of difficulty. "My whole career is for her," Ruiz said.

History Diving has been a human activity as long as swimming has been, from simple entries into the water to jumps for fun from natural high points such as cliffs and outcroppings. During the 1800s diving headfirst into the water to swim became popular, and a sport called plunging developed. Participants would plunge from the side of a pool or dock or any other high point above the water, hold their breath, and glide beneath the water for as far as possible. From 1893 to 1937, plunging championships were held, and the plunge was an event at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, Missouri. Diving evolved as plunging participants attempted take-offs from greater and greater heights. In Europe and the United States, bridges served as locations from which to plunge. In Acapulco, Mexico, jumps and dives from high cliffs into the sea were attempted when the tide came in. In Hawaii, people jumped, dived, and somersaulted from great heights into deep pools at the bottom of waterfalls. The modern sport of diving originated in Germany and Sweden at the beginning of the 19th century. At this time, people began moving gymnastics equipment outside onto beaches during the summer months. There, athletes practiced routines from flying rings, trapezes, and springboards built on high platforms, landing in the water after aerial maneuvers. The trapeze and rings were eventually discarded and diving from platform and springboard alone became popular. The sports were named springboard diving, plain high diving, and fancy high diving.

Diving
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Diving has several meanings:-
  • Jumping or falling deliberately, often acrobatically , into water. This, and also completely unequipped swimming underwater, is described on t#* [[mxcklcnskjvb nzkjndcbv ckvjgfs dvyfhJSNvjlkdsretg87 yuibhdwqgiunylh tgcvynhmeuniurcnnmtrfvuu. When dealing with equipment such as submarines and underwater remotely operated vehicles , the act of descending into the water is called diving and the command for the descent, especially in battle, is "dive."
  • Scuba divers sometimes jump into water feet first from some height above the water (e.g. from a large boat or from a pier . Do not jump in head first if you are wearing any sort of scuba equipment or snorkelling equipment. In particular, an open-circuit scuba banging about on the back is big and hard and heavy and during a headfirst dive (in sense ) may sprain or break the back or neck. Use one hand to hold your mask on.
    Sometimes the term jumping is used to disambiguate, e.g. simply for the thrill of entering the water from a high cement tower, we might say that the children jump off the tower, to describe the airborne experience, as well as the impact with the water, but not emphasizing the dive down below the surface of the water, since the intent of jumping off the cement tower is not really to dive down under the water, and in fact the depth of diving into the water is an undesirable effect that can cause

    American high-diver Greg Louganis hit his head on the board in mid-dive during the qualifying round, in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The gash on his head required stitches, but a mere 10 minutes later, he was back to complete his dives. Two days later, Louganis went on to win the gold medal in the springboard and platform diving events. (Indianinfo) Buster Crabbe, gold and bronze medallist in the 1932 Olympics, went on after his swimming career to appear in 175 movies. He signed with Paramount for his first film "King of The Jungle" in hopes of becoming a rival to Johnny Weissmuller in the movie industry. Weissmuller was a swimming Olympian who starred in 12 Tarzan pictures. (USA Swimming)

    U of M Aquatic Center "Minnesota's Aquatic Center is one of the most comfortable facilities that I have ever dived in. The lighting is excellent and the boards are smooth. I usually do not like to dive indoors, but of the indoor facilities that I have had to dive indoors in, this has to rate as one of the best." -Greg Louganis, Olympic and World Champion Diver The University Aquatic Center, located east of Cooke Hall on the Minneapolis campus, was built in 1990. It was fashioned to meet or exceed Olympic standards so that it could host major swimming and diving events. Nearly two acres in size, the Aquatic Center houses the Dorothy L. Sheppard Pool, a 50-meter competition pool, eight lanes wide and eight feet deep, with a movable bulkhead. The separate diving well features a pair of one-and three-meter boards, as well as 1, 5, 7.5 and 10-meter diving platforms. In addition to the 1,346 permanent seats, there is room for 1,200 temporary bleachers. Skylights run the length of the ceiling, reducing the need for electric lighting at daytime events. Fifty-four loudspeakers surrounding the pool give it "the best acoustics in the country," according to aquatics director Duane Proell. The Aquatic Center has been the site for some of the top swimming and diving events in the country: the 1990 Olympic Festival, 1991 Women's Big Ten Championships, 1991 United States Open, 1991 United States Diving Championships, 1992 Men's Big Ten Champion-ships and the 1993 Women's NCAA Championships. In 1994, the Aquatic Center was the site of the Men's Big Ten Championships and hosted the the meet again in 1998. The Aquatic Center also hosted Phillips 66 USS National Championships in '98. The Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships were held for the first time in 1994 and again in '97. The University of Minnesota will host the NCAAs again this year. The Aquatic Center is also the site Minnesota amateur and high school meets and a full schedule of recreational sports for the campus and the community.

    DESCRIPTION
    Ron O'Brien's Diving for Gold contains the comprehensive information you need to develop divers into champions. It takes a thorough approach that emphasizes the basic skills that divers need for the 1- and 3-meter springboards and the 5-, 7-1/2-, and 10-meter platforms. The book also presents O'Brien's winning formula for constructing the forward approach. And the companion video, Diving My Way, lets you see exactly how the dives should be performed. Ron O'Brien, the world's premier diving coach, teaches you the secrets of skill development that have helped him send 12 divers to the Olympics and 12 to the World Championships. His unique approach breaks dives down into components to encourage divers to devote more time to skill development. With this solid base of fundamental skills, divers learn dives properly, instead of learning them incorrectly and then having to fix problems. Ron O'Brien's Diving for Gold contains over 700 illustrations that present the fundamentals of diving in the order the coach and diver should use them: * Body alignment
    * Boardwork
    * Takeoff
    * Initiating rotation for basic dives
    * Basic dives in tuck, pike, and straight positions

    Synchronised diving was deemed a success at the Sydney Olympics Diving was initially the preserve of gymnasts who practiced their performances over water.
    The modern sport of diving began to take shape at the end of the 19th century in England and Australia and made its Olympic debut in 1904 with the men's 10m platform competition. At each of the next three Games a further discipline was added with the men's 3m springboard introduced in 1908, the women's platform in 1912 and finally the women's springboard came aboard in 1920. The meet maintained that structure until four years ago in Sydney when sychronised diving in each of the four disciplines was introduced. There have been two outstanding athletes in Olympic diving history. Italy's Klaus Dibiasi won a silver medal in platform diving at the 1964 Olympics before winning a hat-trick of titles between 1968 and 1976.
