U of M Aquatic Center "Minnesota's Aquatic Center is one of the most comfortable facilities that I have ever dived in. The lighting is excellent and the boards are smooth. I usually do not like to dive indoors, but of the indoor facilities that I have had to dive indoors in, this has to rate as one of the best." -Greg Louganis, Olympic and World Champion Diver The University Aquatic Center, located east of Cooke Hall on the Minneapolis campus, was built in 1990. It was fashioned to meet or exceed Olympic standards so that it could host major swimming and diving events. Nearly two acres in size, the Aquatic Center houses the Dorothy L. Sheppard Pool, a 50-meter competition pool, eight lanes wide and eight feet deep, with a movable bulkhead. The separate diving well features a pair of one-and three-meter boards, as well as 1, 5, 7.5 and 10-meter diving platforms. In addition to the 1,346 permanent seats, there is room for 1,200 temporary bleachers. Skylights run the length of the ceiling, reducing the need for electric lighting at daytime events. Fifty-four loudspeakers surrounding the pool give it "the best acoustics in the country," according to aquatics director Duane Proell. The Aquatic Center has been the site for some of the top swimming and diving events in the country: the 1990 Olympic Festival, 1991 Women's Big Ten Championships, 1991 United States Open, 1991 United States Diving Championships, 1992 Men's Big Ten Champion-ships and the 1993 Women's NCAA Championships. In 1994, the Aquatic Center was the site of the Men's Big Ten Championships and hosted the the meet again in 1998. The Aquatic Center also hosted Phillips 66 USS National Championships in '98. The Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships were held for the first time in 1994 and again in '97. The University of Minnesota will host the NCAAs again this year. The Aquatic Center is also the site Minnesota amateur and high school meets and a full schedule of recreational sports for the campus and the community.

  • - - Diving for Cover - - Just as in shooting wars, those who command grand legal campaigns have to learn to live with a little collateral damage. Last week it was the men's swimming and diving teams at the University of Miami that took a direct hit. University officials say they had to kill those sports to comply with Title IX, the federal gender-participation statute which increasingly governs all elements of collegiate athletics. Title IX requires schools which receive federal funds, i.e. just about every single one, to give men and women an "equal" chance to compete. "It seems unfair that a school can say it's our right to give women this opportunity and not necessarily men," says former UM swimmer Jennifer Burzawa. Yes, but Title IX is not about fairness. Instead, it perversely defines equality in terms of athletic participation that reflects the overall male/female ratio of the student body. And in Miami's case, the student body has flipped in just a few years from majority-male to majority-female. So even though the school added women's soccer and crew teams and limited the number of non-scholarship players in football and baseballthe "walk-ons," the players who have to be crazy in love with a sport to go to practice everydayit was doomed to come up short.

In the lane with Katura Horton-Perinchief
By Jenise Crawford Katura Horton-Perinchief is a talented junior on The University of Texas women's diving squad. After earning All-Big 12 Conference honors last year on the three-meter springboard and the platform, Perinchief represented Bermuda at the World Championships in Barcelona as well as the Pan American Games in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. A native of Etobicoke, Ontario, Perinchief recently took time to talk with TexasSports.com about how she got into diving, Bermuda and her love for the Cosby Show. IN THE POOL
How did you get into diving?
"I'm originally from Bermuda, and as most young child growing up on an island will do, I dove off bridges, cliffs, and boats. You would see all the big guys doing it and I was always the only little girl joining them. I started diving when I was six and I was involved in gymnastics as well. Gymnastics was really hard on my body so I quit when I was 12 and diving became my focus." Were there any personal influences to you becoming a diver?

New swimming coach brings unique outlook by Jihae Kim
W ith the graduation of legendary swimmer Josh Osterberg and diving standout Jon Chesebro, the members of the Newton South boys swim began the 1998-1999 season knowing that it would be one of rebuilding. The arrival of coach Mike Kennedy, however, has brought new hopes for the future. Replacing former assistant coach Scott Stover, Kennedy brings new ideas and training techniques to his role. Kennedy brings his own personal competitive experiences to South. Although he did not start diving until his freshman year of high school, Kennedy has added to his list of accomplishments a state title in diving, several state swimming titles, and a trip to nationals.
K ennedyís athletic ability extends from swimming to football, baseball, and basketball, and gymnastics. His main focus, however, is diving.
D uring his freshman year of high school, Kennedy joined the swim team. Discovering his talent for diving was quite accidental. Unable to finish a workout during practice, Kennedy took a break. Noticing the diving board, he climbed on the diving board and started doing flips reminiscent of his gymnastics days. A diving coach who happened to be on deck recognized Kennedyís talent and immediately recruited him for the diving team.
I remember this diving coach who was on deck while I was on the board that day, and he told me 'Youíre diving,'î Kennedy said.

Editor's note: This is the fifth part in a two-week series featuring Texas coaches. They were in the weight room when it happened. Texas diver Nikki Triplett had been practicing handstands when head diving coach Matt Scoggin invited her to participate in a friendly handstand contest. The other divers knew what would happen. University of Miami divers Jenna Dreyer and Miguel Velazquez were named the women and men's Atlantic Coast Conference Divers of the Year, respectively, on Wednesday.
These two student-athletes became the first-ever recipients selected for this coveted award at Miami in their ACC debut.
Now they are preparing for the next step in a successful season: the national championships.
The U.S. Open National Championships are another animal totally detached from the regular season and even NCAA competition itself, as it plays more towards national loyalties.
According to Randy Abelman, head coach of the diving team, many of his excelling athletes will have different priorities in the next few weeks concerning diving.
Dreyer, a freshman who also garnered All-American honorable mention honors for the three-meter and 10-meter platform boards, is in South Africa at the moment vying for a spot on her country's national team.

    fancy diving.
Synchronized diving, or diving in pairs, will be introduced into the Sydney 2000

Diving developed in Europe in the 17th century when gymnasts practised their acrobatics over water. In 1988, Greg Louganis of the United States, arguably the greatest Olympic diver in history, cracked his head on the springboard while attempting a reverse 2½ pike. After getting stitches, Louganis won gold in both men's events. ¡The competition Competitors perform a series of dives and are awarded points up to 10, depending upon their elegance and skill. Select a Journal Winter 1997 Spring 1997 Summer 1997 Lessons From Greg Louganis in Relating to Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Youth Arnold H. Grossman * Most youth growing up in today's American society come to expect certain kinds of behavior from significant others in their lives, including their parents, siblings and other relatives; playground and recreation leaders, teachers, team coaches and guidance counselors; and their peers and friends. They learn to prize love and affection, to seek praise and recognition, to enjoy feelings of accomplishment, to be a friend and to have friends, and to be free from intense feelings of guilt and fear. In other words, youth learn to expect certain qualities in their human relationships that help to meet their needs. However, these qualities change dramatically when youths are suspected of being or are self-identified as gay, lesbian, or bisexual. In Breaking the Surface,' Greg Louganis (1995) described his anguish over his sexual orientation, including his battles with low self-esteem and depression; his use of drugs to cope with feelings of stress and pain; his difficulties with personal relationships; his suicide attempts to escape the anguish of living and his feelings of shame; his finding refuge in his acrobatics, diving practice, and achievements; and his being diagnosed and living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) disease-all in the context of his being a four-time Olympic gold-medal diving champion. In doing so, Louganis provided insights into developmental issues that can assist recreation and leisure service professionals and educators in meeting the needs of today's gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth so that they do not have to repeat his negative experiences.

If the names of famous Olympians were placed end to end, they could probably circle the globe many times. This activity provides an introduction to a few who earned the gold. Students may wish to read to find out more about them. It is hoped that they will continue their search to become acquainted with other equally famous Olympic Games stars. U.S. Olympic Games Stars In Athletics (track and field) events, the name of Jesse Owens, the sharecropper's son from Alabama, always tops the list of favorite Olympians. His four gold medals won at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games discredited Hitler's notion of German superiority over other races. In 1984, another track sensation by the name of Carl Lewis matched Jesse Owens' performance of 28 years before and went on to excel in the 1988, 1992, and 1996 Games. Babe Didrikson was the track star of the 1932 Olympic Games, capturing a gold medal for the U.S. in the javelin throw and another in the 800-meter hurdles. She went on to become a golf star and is still considered one of the most versatile female athletes.

Love and Intimacy: Revelations of My Dream Woman May 24 and 27, 1999 The following essay is about how to find love and intimacy in life. I share a recent healing experience in which I met my dream woman, a consequent dream, and the reflections that came from these two experiences. I will show, how I see that we can have all the love and intimacy we want and how to go about having it. As always, I hope it will benefit you immensely in your life and stimulate your own reflections. Yesterday I had an amazing experience during a Reiki session I received from Eva. I met her while I was providing free mini sessions for the Health Ministry of the Unity Church. She offered to work on me for a little. Eva went right to the core of me in her ten or fifteen minute session right out there on the lawn of the Unity Church. She was able to do this with much activity going on all around. She is very gifted. At the beginning of the session she went straight away with her first touch to the place where I carried some discomfort. It was great how she was able to hone in on this immediately and I asked her what she thought it was about. She said she would tell me in a few moments. Then in my mind's eye I saw this lady with long brown hair. For some reason I thought at first that it might be an inner form of Eva, but it was someone else.
