Greg Louganis the Michelangelo of diving
GREGORY EFTHIMIOS LOUGANIS (b. Jan. 29, 1960, San Diego, Ca., U.S.), American diver generally considered the greatest diver in history. Born to unmarried high-school students (Samoan father and American Mother), abandoned soon after his few months, Louganis was adopted still as an infant, by Peter and Frances Louganis. His mother loved theatre and dancing so he trained very soon in dancing, tumbling, and acrobatics, skills that would later earn him a reputation as a graceful, effortless diver. Durning his childhood, he had always the feelings not to be loved sufficiently by his parents, becoming during years very shy, expecialy when other children begun calling him "stupid, nigger(for his brown skin), or faggot". He was a sensible, shy young boy with many personality problems, and all this surroundings let him search some other refugees in things he soon discovered was very good to do, all concerning acrobatics. He pushed over theese activities very hard, why here he could improve his self esteeme, doing easily things that others were afraid or uncapable to do !
His incredible talent and was soon discovered by double Olympian Dr.Sammy Lee, who convinced Greg and his parents that that small and shy diver could become an outstanding champion.

    Diving
sport of plunging into water, usually head foremost, performed with the addition of gymnastic and acrobatic stunts. In its more elaborate, acrobatic form, diving originated in Europe early in the 19th century as a diversion of gymnasts and as a competitive sport in the late 19th century. It became a part of the swimming program of the Olympic Games in 1904 and developed rapidly through the first half of the 20th century. The majority of dives included in the roster may be executed in three distinct positions: straight, pike, or tuck. In the straight position, the body is held extended, with no flexion at the hips or knees. In the pike position, there is a bend at the hips but no knee flexion. In the tuck position, both hips and knees are flexed and the body resembles a ball. The most complicated dives may be done in free (any) position, a loose but graceful combination of the others. The Charge "You belong on the cover of that Wheaties box, not Mary Lou Retton. But you just don't fit the Wheaties image. You come across as too gay." The Case That's one of the minor problems faced by Olympic legend Greg Louganis in Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story , a made-for-TV biopic based on his candid and inspirational 1995 autobiography recounting the self-doubt and lack of confidence that curtailed his personal life and professional career until he came out as an HIV-positive gay man a few months prior to the 1988 Olympiad. Queer for Dummies crib sheet. An interest in dance and acrobatics made for a smooth transition to swimming, particularly diving, and Louganis was taken under the wing of former Olympian Dr. Sammy Lee, who thought young Greg had "the most God-given talent" he'd ever seen. Dr. Lee provided the extensive training that earned the 16-year-old Louganis a Silver Medal in the 1976 Olympics. By this time, Louganis knew he was gay, but his sudden worldwide popularity compelled him to lead a double life, frequently resorting to alcohol as a means of easing the social pain. A full athletic scholarship to the University of Miami brought him to the attention of Olympic diving coach Ron O'Brien (Bruce Weitz), along with the prospects of entering the 1980 Games. In college, Greg moved in with his first gay roommate, but their

History
Print Preview of Section Diving has been a human activity as long as swimming has been, from simple entries into the water to jumps for fun from natural high points such as cliffs and outcroppings. During the 1800s diving headfirst into the water to swim became popular, and a sport called plunging developed. Participants would plunge from the side of a pool or dock or any other high point above the water, hold their breath, and glide beneath the water for as far as possible. From 1893 to 1937, plunging championships were held, and the plunge was an event at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, Missouri.

THE BEGINNING - MISSION VIEJO NADADORES
In 1968 the Mission Viejo Company developed a separate department to provide recreational services for its planned communities. Along with the system of four recreation centers in Mission Viejo, California an equestrian facility, two roller skating rinks and two golf courses were operated by the department. Mission Viejo Company recreation staff was also responsible for operations at the two Casta del Sol Recreation Centers and Lake Mission Viejo for a number of years. The Mission Viejo Company added operations to assist in community wide activities, major events, and programs for special population groups. In December of 1968, the Nadadores Swim team was organized. Coached by Thom Martin with thirty-five members, 90 percent of them novice, they competed in their first meet against Newport Swim Club in February of 1969.
Brian Goodell, age 9, earned a first place ribbon in the Class B in the 100 yd. Individual medley and in the 50 yd. Butterfly. Also winning first place ribbons at the first Nadadores swim meet were Bob Woods, age 11; Dan O’Donovan, age 13; Diane Toepfer, age 10; Kevin Reilly, age 10; and Mike Hurd. One year later, the NADADORES were considered one of the largest teams in the Orange County Swim Conference, consisting of over one hundred members from age 5 to 17.
