Lenny Krayzelburg won the 200m backstroke gold
Lenny Krayzelburg's gold medal in the 200m backstroke caught Olympic silver medallist Sharron Davies' eye, but she is perplexed by the continuing failures of the British team. There were a lot of people who came to the Sydney Olympics as swimming icons, people like Ian Thorpe and Alexander Popov, but only one of them has remained unbeaten throughout the Games so far. That man is American Lenny Krayzelburg, who has won a gold in the 200m backstroke to add to the 100m medal he won on Monday. For me, his victory in the 200m was the race of the evening - because Krayzelburg is such a supreme champion. It was a bit tough in the last 10 yards - he showed more pain than in the last few races - but he was still very convincing. He is a very interesting character. He has had to work very hard for what he has got. His family left Russia when he was a young boy, about seven or eight, because they were Jewish - and in an interview we did with him he said he still felt 50% Russian.

SYDNEY, Australia - Swimmer Lenny Krayzelburg's whole tumultuous life flashed before him as he stood on the winner's podium Monday listening to the Star Spangled Banner after winning Olympic gold. Lenny Krayzelburg led the 100-meter backstroke from start to finish. The world champion added the Olympic men's 100-meter backstroke gold medal to his collection with a commanding victory Monday. The Ukrainian-born American seized the lead on the first length and held off the challenge from Australia's Matt Welsh down the return length to win in an Olympic-record 53.72 seconds. Welsh took the silver in 54.07 and world championship bronze medalist Stev Theloke of Germany collected an Olympic bronze in 54.82. The heavily-favored Krayzelburg finished just outside his world mark of 53.60 set at the Pan Pacific championships in the Sydney Games pool in August 1999 when he set world standards in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke. Krayzelburg led all the way in bettering the old mark of 53.86 set by American Jeff Rouse at the 1992 Olympics. But he was .12 off his own world record set in the same pool last year.

Body Mechanics
Unique, 3-D modeling techniques have turned some USC athletes into Olympic medalists
USC's Kaitlin Sandeno will compete in the 400-meter freestyle race during the August Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. What makes Lenny Krayzelburg's backstroke gold medal material? What sets Kaitlin Sandeno apart from her swim mates in the 800-meter freestyle? What nuances of form did Klete Keller use to close in on Ian Thorpe's world record in the 400-meter freestyle recently? Skill, a lot of practice, and in some cases, a little help from some high-tech biomedical modeling going on at USC Biomechanics Research Laboratory. The lab, in collaboration with the USC Viterbi School's Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, is running an experimentally based research program to develop state-of-the-art biomechanical modeling techniques for USC athletes who hope to make it to the Olympic Games this year. "We look at ways to improve a swimmer's flips, dives and strokes, or show sprinters how to spring from the starting line," says Jill McNitt-Gray, associate professor of kinesiology

Reaching for the gold
Athletes use high-tech modeling to perfect their performances
What makes Lenny Krayzelburg's backstroke gold-medal material? What sets Kaitlin Sandeno apart from her swim mates in the 800-meter freestyle? What nuances of form did Klete Keller recently use to close in on Ian Thorpe's world record in the 400-meter freestyle?
The answer: skill, a lot of practice, and in some cases, a little help from some high-tech biomedical modeling taking place at USC Biomechanics Research Laboratory.
The lab, in collaboration with the USC Viterbi School of Engineering's departments of biomedical engineering, and aerospace and mechanical engineering, is running an experimentally based research program to develop state-of-the-art biomechanical modeling techniques for USC athletes who hope to reach this year's Olympic Games in Athens.
"We look at ways to improve a swimmer's flips, dives and strokes or show sprinters how to spring from the starting line," said Jill McNitt-Gray, associate professor of kinesiology, biomedical engineering and biological sciences.
"In gymnastics, we'll videotape and model someone's performance to get a sense of how they are generating vertical and angular momentum when they launch a backflip from the balance beam," she said. "We can advise them on how to shift their weight just a little or spring up just a little sooner to perfect the performance."
