Two new pools that stretch for several city blocks on the Santa Monica College (SMC) Campus will open July 17, after years of planning and $8.3 million in construction and high-tech equipment costs.
Covered in blue tiles, the post-modern structure is located at 16th Street and Pico Boulevard and includes both a 50-meter Olympic size pool and a ten lane, 80-foot by 75-foot instructional and recreational pool.
The old facility, considered “hidden” on the college campus, consisted of an outdated pool and diving well. It was demolished in December of 2000.
“The old facility which had been there for 40 years was a much-loved and used facility that had completed its life. We’ve now increased the amount of meeting room, deck, and pool surface area by over 100 percent,” said Julie Rusk, Human Services Manager for Santa Monica Aquatics (SMA).
Situated next to the football arena just off 16th Street, the new structure is center stage on the campus and is already seen as an elite facility for racing and competition in the City.

University of Akron Athletics History
The University of Akron's storied Athletics history dates back nearly 130 years. Now, 18 intercollegiate sports strong, with more than 350 student-athletes, the Akron Zips are into their second decade of Mid-American Conference membership and poised for academic and competitive growth. The Zips' intercollegiate Athletics program includes basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball for women; and baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, and indoor and outdoor track and field for men. Rifle is offered as a co-ed sport. Academics are at the forefront of the Student-Athlete Experience at UA. This fact was showcased during the 2004-05 academic year as The University of Akron finished second in the Mid-American Conference Academic Achievement Award standings. A total of 389 Zips student-athletes had a cumulative GPA of 3.04 for the 2004-05 academic year. It marked the second-straight season the Zips finished as the runner-up to Central Michigan. The newest addition to the UA Athletics Facilities Complex is the new Softball Complex, which began construction on August 22, 2005. Completion is set for the spring of 2006.

Archives UT-ex Peirsol leads American sweep in backstroke 11:06 PM CDT on Monday, August 16, 2004 By RACHEL COHEN / The Dallas Morning News The U.S. team swept the two 100-meter backstroke finals, with former Longhorn Aaron Peirsol winning on the men's side and Natalie Coughlin for the women. Peirsol, the silver medalist in the 200 backstroke as a 17-year-old in 2000, moved from second to first over the final 50 meters. He earned his first gold a day after igniting a controversy by accusing Japan's Kosuke Kitajima of using an illegal kick in beating fellow Longhorn and U.S. teammate Brendan Hansen in the 100 breaststroke. More Olympics Peirsol didn't back down from his statements Monday. He did return to his more laidback surfer style, though. He expressed confidence that the U.S. men's team would be fine after the world record-holding Hansen settled for silver and the 4x100 freestyle squad earned an unaccustomed bronze Sunday. "We've done it time in and time out," he said. "All the guys on this team are so stellar and so studly." U.S. teammate Lenny Krayzelburg, the defending champ and world record-holder in the event, finished fourth, just two one-hundredths of a second from bronze. Krayzelburg noted that he was just .04 second from missing the Olympic team. The 28-year-old, who has been bothered by a shoulder injury, plans to retire.

The United States as a swimming nation has always fared pretty well in the backstroke. That fact has never been truer than it is today. Lenny Krayzelburg is the defending Olympic champion in both the 100m and 200m backstrokes. From 1999 to 2002, he held the world records in all three backstroke events (50, 100, 200) … until Aaron Peirsol came along this year and broke the 200m backstroke world mark. Peirsol was second to Lenny in the 200m backstroke in Sydney; he went on to win his own world title in 2001.

Aquatics Water Polo Women’s water polo was one of the new events at the Sydney Games. When one plays water polo, the players are prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool. There are four seven-minute quarters, and water polo players may swim up to five kilometers in a single game. One must have the endurance and technique of a wonderful swimmer, a football player’s skill in passing, dribbling and shooting for a goal, and a rugby player’s strength to battle for the ball. Water polo started as the aquatic version of rugby. It began in the mid-1800s in England, before it started evolving into an aquatic resemblance of football (soccer). It had become so popular in Europe and North America, that it became an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games in Paris. Tall and long-armed athletes excel in this sport because 85 percent of the body is under water. The body is also about 85 percent submerged with all of the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling, and yanking of bathing suits, which makes the game even tougher. Only eight teams qualify in the women’s division, while twelve teams compete in the men’s division at the Olympic Games.
