Thursday, 21 September, 2000, 08:26 GMT 09:26 UK De Bruijn shines again
Inge de Bruijn continues to dominate with another gold
Dutch swimmer Inge de Bruijn has cruised to another gold medal in the Olympic pool as she dominated the women's 100 metre freestyle from start to finish. De Bruijn beat off the attentions of Sweden's Therese Alshammar by a full half second, while the two Americans Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson could not be separated to share the bronze. De Bruijn, who broke seven world records and equalled another in a nine-week spree earlier this year, broke her own 100metres butterfly mark to win her first Olympic gold on Sunday. She had lowered the 100 freestyle world mark on Wednesday when clocking 53.77 in the semi-finals. De Bruijn's time in Thursday's final was an impressive 53.83.
Jubilant Agnes Kovacs
Breaststroke final Meanwhile, Agnes Kovacs took gold in the women's 200m breaststroke final. Kovacs won the final by the smallest of margins, beating the American Kristy Kowal.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. LEARN FROM THE OLYMPIANS At 14, Amanda Beard was the "baby" of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team. But she was a fast baby, setting an American record in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:08.09) at the Olympic Trials, then going on to win gold in the medley relay and silver in both the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke at the Atlanta Games. For the next several years, as she struggled to adjust her stroke to her changing body, most experts wrote her off as a factor for the 2000 Olympics. But not her coach, Dr. Dave Salo. He predicted she would be back by the U.S. Trials, and would make the U.S. team in the 200 meter breaststroke. That's exactly what she did, as she placed second behind Kristy Kowal in Indianapolis. At Sydney, she confounded the prognosticators once again by earning a bronze medal.

But with the dawning of a new millennium, Arizona is in the perfect position to start a streak of its own. The saying goes in swimming that in an Olympic year, everything goes out the window. The first year of the new millennium will be no exception, as the NCAA has done away with the traditional short course yards format for this year's Division I championship meet, opting to swim short course meters instead. For the first time in the history of women's NCAAs, swimmers will not only have the opportunity to become event winners and collegiate record holders, but world record holders as well.

Isn't that what 11 and 12 year olds swim? I never understood why women did not have a 1500 (they now do) but why add the sprints? On the other hand, adding 50's of strokes does give more events to the stroke specialists." What do you think? More About Swimming Headlines

Wednesday, January 14, 1998 Athletics South Africa admit to admin blunder JOHANNESBURG Athletics South Africa (ASA) admitted yesterday that an administrative error had caused the blunder over the Commonwealth Games qualification standards. Its initial requirements released in early December were corrected shortly before Christmas following an outcry by athletes and coaches over the guidelines which were far tougher than those set out for the World Championships in Athens last year. The revised requirements are exactly the same as those issued for Athens. "The standards given out first were from a discussion document sent out before we decided on the standards for Athens," ASA secretary general Banele Sindani said. "That document was used as a guideline last year. "The person who pulled out the standards for the Commonwealth Games mistakenly pulled the wrong document out of the computer." Sindani denied that ASA were forced to lower the standards because of complaints from coaches and athletes.

"What a night," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "We had a great night, and hopefully we can keep it rolling." The foursome of Samantha Arsenault, Sarah Poewe, Mary DeScenza and Kara Lynn Joyce reached the top of the medal stand and lowered the school and pool record with a winning time of 1:38.21 in the 200-yard medley relay, giving Georgia its second consecutive title in the event. Joyce swam the fastest anchor split, while Poewe had the fastest breaststroke leg. The relay's mark bettered the previous Georgia record of 1:38.28 set at the 2000 SECs by Christine Keller, Kristy Kowal, Courtney Shealy and Stefanie Williams. Records continued to fall, as the Lady Bulldogs tied the existing American record of 7:04.06 a runner-up finish in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay. DeScenza posted the fastest 200-yard freestyle time in the country this year, as she touched in a school-record 1:44.11 to give Georgia the early lead. "It is great to tie the record, but we want to go faster," said Bauerle. "We never complain about an American record."

SYDNEY, Australia American Lenny Krayzelburg, who emigrated from Ukraine 11 years ago, won his second Olympic gold in the 200-meter backstroke Thursday. Krayzelburg swam an Olympic record 1 minute, 56.76 seconds slightly less than a second off his world record. He also broke the Olympic mark in the preliminaries and semifinals. Aaron Peirsol, a 17-year-old from Irvine, Calif., won silver in 1:57.35. Matthew Welsh of Australia was third in 1:57.59. Tom Dolan of Arlington, Va., earned silver and Tom Wilkens of Middletown, N.J., won bronze in the 200 individual medley. Dolan finished in 1:59.77 the first American to ever go under 2 minutes and Wilkens in 2:00.87. "I gave it all I had. I was hurting coming home," said Dolan, who won the 400 individual medley Sunday. "I didn't have speed or strength to go that fast." Massimiliano Rosolino of Italy won the gold in an Olympic record of 1:58.98 to go with his silver in the 400 freestyle and his bronze in the 200 free.
