Paralympian shines at national swim titles
Reporter: Natasha Johnson
MAXINE McKEW: As always, the headlines out of the recent Australian swimming championships were dominated by the stars - the Hacketts and the Klims - and that's fair enough. The competition was fierce for places in the national team to compete against the world's best in Montreal later this year. But there was one swimmer who didn't rate much media attention. despite claiming two gold medals at last year's Athens games. One of Australia's top Paralympians, 20-year-old Daniel Bell, has a remarkable story to tell about success in sport and in life. Natasha Johnson reports.
COMMENTATOR: The world record holder, Daniel Bell of Australia, swimming in lane 4.
GLENN McKEEMAN, CHRISTIAN COLLEGE GEELONG: You almost have to pinch yourself...
COMMENTATOR: Now, Daniel Bell coming through in the middle.
GLENN McKEEMAN: To see that happen is really a miracle.

Far from being at the mercy of the elements, the larvae of reef fish survive by prodigious feats of swimming - often into the open sea. It means, Bob Beale writes, that no coral reef can be considered self-contained in the battle to save ocean diversity.
An 11mm long larval Rainford's Butterflyfish Chaetodon rainfordi A flamboyant angelfish weaves its way through the intricate maze of coral and stops abruptly to hover beside a nondescript rock. Then it gapes its mouth and flares its gills, looking for all the world as if it is about to throw up. But no, it freezes in this odd position and glances sideways towards the rock. At this signal, a tiny torpedo-shaped figure with a fluoro-blue tail darts out from beneath a crevice and confidently approaches. Incredibly, the smaller fish swims gently head first into the open gill covers of the stationary angelfish and starts pecking away at the delicate blood-red fronds of its gills.
Rainford's Butterflyfish Chaetodon rainfordi . Adults grow to about 150mm in length. We are on the Low Isles, a couple of island specks of marine reserve in the Great Barrier Reef, a short boat ride from Port Douglas in far north Queensland.

A blow-by-blow guide to Australia's medal-winning events. DAY 1 SWIMMING Men's 400m freestyle - Ian Thorpe Thorpe appeared emotional in the pool as he retained the 400 metres title. Reinstated to the team after falling from the blocks in the trials, Thorpe was cheered on by the man who stepped aside for him, Craig Stevens. Grant Hackett pushed his teammate all the way, but there was no denying Thorpe the gold medal. "The people I swam it for was the person who gave me the opportunity in this race, Craig Stevens, and I was thinking about him, about my coach Tracey Menzies, my family, all of the people that this means something to, and all of the people who have been prepared to support me in the lead-up to this through the tough times." - Ian Thorpe SWIMMING Women's 4x100m freestyle relay - Alice Mills, Lisbeth Lenton, Petria Thomas, Jodie Henry

Latest: Saturday September 23, 2000 12:51 PM SYDNEY, Australia Clear out the chlorine and dust off the history books. This was a terrific swim meet. World records fell in 13 races, many more than once. The U.S. led all teams in both gold (14) and total (33) medals, handily topping the Australian marks of five and 18. The 18,000-seat Sydney International Aquatic Centre was an ideal setting for the emotion of the week. Here is our list of a half-dozen unforgettable highlights from the swim venue, plus 10 other swimmers who made the meet's unofficial all-star team.
She Dawned on us
Any time you looked over at the group of Australian swimmers who weren't swimming that day but we there to support their teammates, you saw Dawn Fraser leading the cheers. She did not have an official role with the swimmers or at the Games, except to simply be the most beloved figure anywhere she went. After amassing four gold and four silver swimming medals from 1956 to 1964, Fraser took on several roles in which she supported Australian sports, and was even the team manager for water polo at one Olympiad. She represented the Sydney suburb of Balmain in the Australian parliament and was considered the favorite to light the torch at the Games by many observers until

Speed vs. Effort
by Wayne Goldsmith
Swimming is a simple sport. Jump in at one end and get to the other end before anyone else. In the most basic analysis, It's a game of speed. Speed is the most crucial element in the sport. It's fundamental. The swimmer who swims fastest, wins the race.
But is it really that simple? We know from biomechanical analysis of champions at major swimming competitions that the fastest swimmer doesn't always win. Sometimes the fastest swimmer (ie the person with the highest swimming speed) loses the race because of inferior skills, turns, starts and finishes.
We know sometimes the fastest swimmer doesn't win because they weren't mentally focussed in on the task. In the end however, skills, fitness, mental attitude, flexibility and all the other elements of the sport come down to one question ...how fast can you swim?
What is swimming speed? Technically it is the velocity that your body moves through the water. If you ask a little kid to swim as fast as they can, they throw their arms and legs as fast as possible with lots of effort, but without much speed. They grit their teeth, tighten their arms, hold their breath and generally fight the water. They make lots of splash, but not much dash!
There is a difference between effort and speed. Great swimmers often report that when they experience REAL SPEED, it seems to come with little EFFORT. The great South African breaststroke swimmer Penny Heyns recently broke the world records for 100 and 200 metres. She commented: "When I touched the wall I thought, maybe a 2:30, and this felt too easy for that," Heyns said. "I really don't know what happened."

To be eligible, student-athletes had to be letterwinners and maintain a 3.2 or better grade point index for the 2001-2002 academic year.
