Old Boys win medals at World Championships
Matt Welsh ('94) and Dean Pullar ('90) joined the ranks of outstanding Old Boy sportsmen, with their medal winning performances at the recent World Swimming Championships held in Perth.
Matt wins gold
There is Matt Welsh at the World Swimming on top of the podium with a gold medal hanging around his neck, while in Swan Hill, the Scotch swimming and diving team has just witnessed one of their own become a world champion, as a member of the 4 X 100 metre medley relay team. The room was full of boys and staff jumping up and cheering for Matt as he became Australia's best backstroker.
Australian record
Earlier in the programme Matt had risen up the world rankings from 20th position, to become the world's sixth fastest backstroker. In the process he broke the Australian 100 metre backstroke record in a sizzling time of 55.45 seconds. With a world class time Matt placed the golden glint on the medley relay, to strongly support his team mates Michael Klim (ex Wesley), Chris Fydler, and Phil Rogers. Matt swam a strong backstroke leg, thereby spearheading his team to a commanding position for the remainder to break away to win gold. Such a swim has put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces, especially those associated with the Scotch swimming and diving team. Even Australia's head swimming coach, Don Talbot, had a smile after Matt's performance, as he had found a world class backstroker, which had been missing for some time on the Australian team.

At the Australian Short Course Champs, Matt Welsh set a WR of 23.31 for the 50 meter back, and an Aussie relay squad broke the world 400 meter medley relay mark with a 3:28.12. Petria Thomas set a Commonwealth record 56.93 in the 100 meter fly, and Michael Klim made a successful return from surgery, winning the 100 and 200 meter free. In England, Stephen Parry won five golds at the British SC Champs. In other news: Ron van Pool was elected president of USA Swimming; and Ian Thorpe left his longtime coach, Doug Frost.

Aquatics Water Polo Women’s water polo was one of the new events at the Sydney Games. When one plays water polo, the players are prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool. There are four seven-minute quarters, and water polo players may swim up to five kilometers in a single game. One must have the endurance and technique of a wonderful swimmer, a football player’s skill in passing, dribbling and shooting for a goal, and a rugby player’s strength to battle for the ball. Water polo started as the aquatic version of rugby. It began in the mid-1800s in England, before it started evolving into an aquatic resemblance of football (soccer). It had become so popular in Europe and North America, that it became an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games in Paris. Tall and long-armed athletes excel in this sport because 85 percent of the body is under water. The body is also about 85 percent submerged with all of the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling, and yanking of bathing suits, which makes the game even tougher. Only eight teams qualify in the women’s division, while twelve teams compete in the men’s division at the Olympic Games.

XI FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
MONTREAL 2005 gets ready for a high-calibre meet
Montreal, May 2, 2005 — A great number of stars will be in action this summer in Montreal at the XI FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, despite this being a post-Olympic year. Michael Phelps and Pieter van den Hoogenband in the swimming events, divers Dmitri Sautin and Chantelle Newbery, the Russian synchronized swimming team and the Hungarian and Italian water-polo teams are expected to offer showcase performances to the spectators coming to Ste-Hélène and Notre-Dame Islands, July 17 to 31.
Swimming
The large number of Olympic medallists present this summer will make Ian Thorpe’s decision not to come less noticed, especially given the presence of the top attraction, U.S. star Michael Phelps, an eight-time medallist in Athens last year. Dutch giant Pieter van den Hoogenband will also be there to give Phelps a hard time. Adding to that are Michael Klim of Australia in the freestyle races and American Aaron Peirsol, the Olympic and World Champion in the 100 m and 200 m backstroke. Peirsol registered a pair of world records this spring at the U.S. Trials.

Awesome Aussies Klim and Thorpe get a taste for gold
The men's 4x200m freestyle relay team came agonisingly close to claiming Britain's first swimming medal at Sydney 2000. The Australian quartet, led by the phenomenal Ian Thorpe, smashed the world record to romp to gold with clear blue water between them and the rest of the field. The GB team were in second place going into the final length, but in a thrilling finale - with four teams competing for the two remaining places - they were edged out to fifth. The American team stole second spot and the bronze was snatched by Holland, inspired by 200m freestyle champion Pieter van den Hoogenband. New best Britain's quartet of Ed Sinclair, Paul Palmer, Marc Spackman and James Salter clocked 7:17.98 to shatter the two-year-old national mark by well over four seconds.
James Salter just missed out on a medal
But they could not hide their disappointment as they failed to win Britain's first swimming medal of the Games.

Anthony Ervin and Gary Hall Jr tied for the victory, relegating Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband to the bronze medal position. World record holder Alexander Popov was right in with a chance in what was a fantastically tight finish until he put his head up right at the end. That relegated him to sixth, just ahead of Britain's Mark Foster, who made a superb start and led the early stages, but wilted in the second half of the race. "I'm disappointed at the way it went," Foster said. Hall Jr, who is the training partner of Ervin, said: "It has been a rough four years for me, so to come out on top, even if I share the victory, is great. And I couldn't be sharing it with a better guy." Silent stadium Earlier, Sweden's Lars Froelander produced a major shock by taking gold in the 100m butterfly.
