2005 MIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championship Preview The 2005 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships are set for Thursday, February 17 through Saturday, February 19 at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis, Minn. The preliminary rounds are scheduled to begin each day at 10:30am with the finals beginning at 6:30pm on Thursday and Friday and 5:00pm on Saturday.
The 2004-05 MIAC women's swimming and diving season is about to come to an end, and the question is, who will be crowned the 2005 MIAC Champions? The defending champions, Gustavus Adolphus College, will be in search of its third conference title in four years. However, the Gusties will have to get past Carleton and St. Olaf, both of which the Gusties lost to in dual meets in the regular season. The rest of the teams in the conference will attempt to close the gap on the big three. The 2005 MIAC Championships could be one of the closest meets in conference history.

Stanford men cruise to victory at 75th swim championships
Stanford captured the team title at the 75th annual Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 26-28 at Auburn. The Cardinal scored 599 points to beat the host Tigers (3941/2) and Texas (3621/2). Stanford captain Tom Wilkens (with teammate Blake Holden) led a one-two finish for the Cardinal in the 200 breaststroke and also swept the two individual medley events. Junior Matthew Pierce and freshman Steven Brown also finished one-two for the Cardinal in the 200 butterfly, and junior Tate Blahnik edged world champion Lenny Kryzelburg of Southern California in the 200-yard backstroke, 1:41.21 to 1:41.55. Stanford capped its victory with a narrow win over Texas in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Skip Kenney, who has coached seven of Stanford's eight NCAA men's championship teams, was proud that all of his swimmers managed to make the championship final in all 18 swimming events. "This has exceeded everything I expected from this team. We had great leadership from our upperclassmen and the freshman did a great job," Kenney said. Individually, Arizona's Ryk Neethling won three events the 200-, 500- and 1,650-yard freestyles. His 14:32.50 time in the 1,650 was the second fastest ever in the championships, trailing only Tom Dolan's record 14.29.31 time in 1995.

Six-year quest pays off for Dolan
By Steve Wilstein
Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia The roars burst out of Tom Dolan in uncontrollable waves, his face ferocious, defiant, wild. "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!" US swimmer Tom Dolan celebrates after winning the 400 individual medley in world record time. He whacked the water and pumped his arms, exhorting a crowd packed to the roof to shout with him, to celebrate his gold and the world record he set, breaking his own mark after it had stood for six years. "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!" He slapped hands hard with teammate Erik Vendt, who had followed him for silver, then sat pugnaciously astride the lane marker, bellowing until he was hoarse. "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!" When Dolan finally emerged from the pool, his whole body shivering in victory, he apologized for the way he had acted, explaining that the emotion had just poured out of him. But anyone who knew what Dolan had gone through before he touched the pool wall at the end of one of swimming's most grueling races, the 400-meter individual medley, would hesitate to condemn his feverish display.

Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia American Tom Dolan broke his own six-year-old world record in the 400-meter individual medley Sunday, winning his second consecutive Olympic gold in the event with a dominating performance. Brooke Bennett, left with Diana Munz, gave the United States its first gold in the 400 free since Janet Evans won in 1988. Dolan had the Australian crowd of 17,500 on its feet as he won in 4 minutes, 11.76 seconds, lowering his old mark of 4:12.30 set at the 1994 world championships in Rome. "It was a tough swim," he said. "I was feeling it coming home, but I knew if I got out ahead no one could beat me." Dolan's mark was the eighth world record in two days of swimming competition at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre. Erik Vendt of North Easton, Mass., held on for silver in 4:14.23. Curtis Myden of Canada won bronze in 4:15.33. "At 200 (meters), I saw how far ahead Tom was," said Vendt, who peeked at Dolan from Lane 2. "I knew it was going to be a world record."

Stags Run Deep
Friday, December 17, 2004; Page D07 Seniors Jack Curran and Matt Harris may be the stars for DeMatha, but the Stags have one of the deepest swimming teams in the area. DeMatha should also get major contributions from freshman Alex Chen and junior Peter Humphries in the pursuit of a title in the only sport the school has yet to conquer. . . . Brendon McReady will take over at Gonzaga, replacing longtime coach Joe Viola Athlete to Watch
Josh Hafkin, Georgetown Prep, Soph.
Hafkin won two backstroke titles for Bullis at last year's Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships and then transferred for his sophomore year to Georgetown Prep, the defending Metros champions, saying he was seeking more of a team atmosphere. The move reunites him with Little Hoyas Coach Kirby Weldon, who coached Hafkin when he was 5. Hafkin has already qualified for the next Olympic trials, swimming the 100-yard backstroke in 49.29 seconds a week ago at the Tom Dolan Invitational.
