US pools its talents for a final splash
August 22, 2004 ATHENS The US swimming team, which has dominated the Olympics since 1960, ended these Games the way it started them a week ago yesterday, with a gold medal and a world record, this one by the men's 4 x 100-meter medley relay. ADVERTISEMENT "This has been one of the most phenomenal teams I've ever been a part of," said coach Eddie Reese, after the Americans had finished the meet with 28 medals, more than runner-up Australia (15) and Japan (8) combined. Though the US fell shy of the 33 medals they won in Sydney four years ago, they won more than the 26 managed in 1996 when they were competing in home water in Atlanta. This time, the workload was shouldered by the men, who won 18, including nine golds, six of which Michael Phelps had a hand in. "We're really glad he's on our team," cracked Reese. "If somebody had said he'd do this when he was fifth in the 200 butterfly in Sydney, we'd all have bet our house and one child that it would not occur. Not this year. Not any time in the future." Phelps, who gave his butterfly leg on last night's relay to archrival Ian Crocker, was cheering from the stands as the medley quartet of backstroker Aaron Peirsol, breaststroker Brendan Hansen, Crocker, and freestyler Jason Lezak burned a world-record 3:30.68 (with Peirsol swimming a world-record 53.45 leadoff) to beat the Germans by more than three seconds.

People also should have strong swimming skills in a variety of other water-based activities, including competitive diving fishing , jet-skiing, rowing sailing , and waterskiing Swimming is a valuable activity for physical therapy and exercise. Because it works the majority of the muscles in the body and provides both aerobic benefits and resistance benefits (as the swimmer pulls and pushes through the water), the sport is generally considered one of the most complete forms of exercise. Swimming does not strain joints and connective tissue as much as many other forms of exercise, and swimmers injure themselves at a lower rate than most other athletes. Athletes in other sports who are recovering from injuries often swim to stay in shape.

Aug. 21, 2004 Athens, Greece - Jenny Thompson (1991-95 at Stanford) became the most decorated Olympian in American history when she picked up her 12th career Olympic medal as a member of the United States' second-place 4x100 medley relay women's swimming team on Saturday. Goalkeeper Jackie Frank had one of the best international matches of her career in Team USA's key 8-4 win over Russia on Friday Former Stanford Players Lead Team USA Women's Water Polo Into Olympic Semifinals
Julie Foudy and American women's soccer squad also reach semis after 2-1 win over Japan. Aug. 20, 2004 Athens, Greece - Four former Stanford women's water polo players contributed to a key 8-4 Team USA victory over Russia in its final Preliminary Group B Game that propelled the Americans into the second semifinal against a still undetermined opponent on Tuesday, August 24. The Americans had entered Friday's action needing a victory or a tie against the previously unbeaten Russians to advance to the medal round and wound up finishing as the top team in Group B to earn a quarterfinal bye. The USA equaled the 2-1 record posted by Russia in Group B action but won the head-to-head match between the teams. Goalkeeper Jackie Frank (2000-03) had one of the best performances of her international career in Friday's win, posting 14 saves and limiting the Russians to only four goals. Brenda Villa (2000-03 at Stanford) aided the cause with a pair of goals and is now the Americans' top scorer at the Olympics with six goals in the first three contests. Margie Dingeldein (1999-2002 at Stanford) added one goal, while Ellen Estes (1999-2002 at Stanford) also played in the contest but did not score.

World and Olympic record holder Inge de Bruijn swam 24.66 seconds to finish as the fastest qualifier for the semifinals in today's women's 50m freestyle heats. Australians Michelle Engelsman and Libby Lenton swam 25.82 seconds and 25.31 seconds respectively to qualify fifth and seventh fastest. Engelsman showed the long week waiting to compete has not dulled her edge, recording a personal best time. "I'm glad to finally get a swim," she said. "It's a long time to wait, sitting around and cheering for the rest of the team. For her part, Lenton looked comfortably in control, touching the wall .25 of a second behind heat winner Kara Lynn Joyce of the US. "I've had an interesting couple of days," she said. "I think I've done enough going into the main races. I'm growing in confidence. So far I've experienced the ultimate Olympic ride, the ultimate high and the ultimate low, but I'm feeling good today."

By The Associated Press FUKUOKA, Japan American teen-ager Michael Phelps broke his own world record in the 200-meter butterfly, winning the gold medal at the world championships Tuesday in 1 minute, 54.58 seconds. Olympic champion Tom Malchow of the United States won the silver medal in 1:55.28. He held the world record until Phelps lowered the mark to 1:54.92 at the U.S. trials at the Jamail Swim Center in Austin on March 30. Anatoli Poliakov of Russia took the bronze in 1:55.68. Phelps led at the first turn and was below world-record pace for the last 160 meters. He was 0.83 under on his 50-meter split and 0.33 under at the final turn before powering down the final lap to cut 0.34 off his previous record. "I feel great it's hard to explain," Phelps said. "I was a little disappointed after (the semifinals), so I just tried to get my hand on the wall first."
