No wonder the 18-year-old looked so elated after winning a silver medal Saturday. Jensen sliced more than 11 seconds off his American record to achieve his objective of 14 minutes, 45 seconds. He also put pressure on champion Grant Hackett of Australia, the world record holder. Jensen lurked a split-second back with 100 meters to go before losing by less than two seconds. Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. While overloading and base training work are still very important, underloading is, perhaps, just as important in achieving super results. In swimming, there is no simple recipe for success. There are as many ways to prepare for championship performance as there are programs that produce champions. There is no one "right" or "wrong" way. However, some long-held assumptions about training have been challenged in astonishing ways over the last few years. One of these is the widely-held belief that one has to train so hard as to be "broken down" before a taper can produce the best possible performance. Intelligent and progressive programs worldwide are showing us that it is possible to swim very fast several times each year. One only has to look at Ian Thorpe and Inge De Bruijn, the two most outstanding competitive swimmers in the world today, and their excellent pre-Olympic performances. Then we witnessed another dramatic drop in times at the 2000 Olympics. This has been the pattern with the top competitors in all events over the last few seasons.

SPORTSLINE Boxing Former World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Volodymyr Klitschko is scheduled to fight on August 30 in Munich, Germany, against Fabio Moli of Argentina. The fight will be the first for Klitschko since his loss to Corrie Sanders of South Africa on March 8. Klitschko, 27, has 40 wins and two losses while the 34-year-old Moli has 29 wins and two losses. "We decided on Moli because he is a big, hard-hitting man," Klitschko's promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl said on July 17, according to the Associated Press. "Volodymyr needs a challenge to regain his confidence in the ring." Meanwhile, Vitalii Klitschko was cleared to box by an independent medical expert on July 22, The New York Times reported recently. His June 21 fight with World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was stopped after a doctor ruled that a cut over Klitschko's left eye obscured the boxer's vision. The decision to clear the elder Klitschko makes the possibility of a rematch with Lewis strong. However, The Times reported on August 5 that Lewis passed up a lucrative December 6 rematch, although the possibility of a rematch between Lewis and Klitschko has not been ruled out and could happen in 2004. "Lennox is taking a good, long, hard look at his career," Lewis's lawyer, Judd Bernstein said on August 4, according to The New York Times. "He's not ready to begin training and felt it was unfair for everyone to hang on to that date."

ATHENS, Greece - Inge de Bruijn of the Netherlands won the 50-meter freestyle for the second consecutive Olympics on Saturday night. De Bruijn's time of 24.58 seconds was 26-hundredths of a second slower than her winning time at the Sydney Games. Malia Metella of France earned silver in 24.89 and Lisbeth Lenton of Australia took bronze in 24.91. De Bruijn, who turns 31 on Tuesday, became the first woman to win consecutive sprint titles since the event was added to the Olympic program in 1988. "This is just the best birthday present I could hope for. A gold in the last day of the program - what a climax," the Dutchwoman said. "It's an amazing feeling." Slide show Emotional Moments: Aug. 29
Trouble mars the marathon but the Olympic spirit prevails. De Bruijn also won silver in the 100 freestyle, and bronzes in the 100 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay.

In addition to her world record in the 100 freestyle semifinals, Jodie Henry helped Australia set a world record in the 400 freestyle relay.
ATHENS, Greece - Jodie Henry of Australia followed a world-record swim in the semifinals by winning an Olympic gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle Thursday night, holding off defending champion Inge de Bruijn and American Natalie Coughlin. Henry finished strong and touched first in 53.84 seconds, just one day after setting that world record of 53.52 in the semis. The 30-year-old de Bruijn, who won gold for the Netherlands four years ago, took silver this time in 54.16. Coughlin, of Concord, Calif., settled for bronze at 54.40. Henry has emerged as one of the top female swimmers of the Athens Games. On Saturday, she passed American Jenny Thompson in the final leg of the 400 freestyle relay Saturday to give Australia the gold in world-record time. Henry swam her 100 split in 52.95. Aquatics Water Polo Women’s water polo was one of the new events at the Sydney Games. When one plays water polo, the players are prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool. There are four seven-minute quarters, and water polo players may swim up to five kilometers in a single game. One must have the endurance and technique of a wonderful swimmer, a football player’s skill in passing, dribbling and shooting for a goal, and a rugby player’s strength to battle for the ball. Water polo started as the aquatic version of rugby. It began in the mid-1800s in England, before it started evolving into an aquatic resemblance of football (soccer). It had become so popular in Europe and North America, that it became an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games in Paris. Tall and long-armed athletes excel in this sport because 85 percent of the body is under water. The body is also about 85 percent submerged with all of the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling, and yanking of bathing suits, which makes the game even tougher. Only eight teams qualify in the women’s division, while twelve teams compete in the men’s division at the Olympic Games.
