Known as “El Pibe” (the kid), Carlos Valderrama is easy recognizable with his big curly blonde hair and all his jewelry. He was an accurate passer of the ball and a playmaker of finest caliber. He is also one of very few players to have captained his country in three World Cups. His biggest World Cup moment was when he dribbled past several players and delivered a pinpoint pass to teammate Rincon who scored the necessary equalizer three minutes into injurytime against eventual winners West Germany in 1990. That goal meant Colombia qualified to the second round.

Many year-end awards fail the measurement test: e.g., MVP, Rookie of the Year. Others wear the mantle of the obvious and in essence report themselves: e.g., scoring leader, goals against average. The Gold Mine Awards reveal hidden aspects of the league. Honorable mention goes to both Taylor Twellman and Carlos Ruiz for accuracy while leading the league in points and goals, respectively. Interestingly, not only did Nelson not top Steve Ralston, the winner in 2001 for Tampa Bay (7 goals on 18 shots for a ratio of 2.57), but his scoring efficiency would not even have been in the top five last year.

UNITED STATES SOCCER - MLS, National Teams, College, World Cup, Plus! Americans Abroad US SOCCER WORLD CUP LATEST NEWS NATIONAL TEAMS AMERICANS ABROAD ... CONTACT US! MLS 2001 GOLD MINE AWARDS by Jeff Dieffenbach Sport. Not a sport. It’s a debate that will never be settled, but one school of thought has it that if you can’t measure the result (gymnastics, synchronized swimming, ballroom dancing), it’s not a sport. Extremely difficult, certainly! A sport, NO!
Likewise, many year-end awards (MVP, Rookie of the Year, and so on) fail the measurement test. Others (top goal scorer, best goals against average, etc) practically report themselves, no point in repeating them here. Great and not so great performances abounded in MLS this year. Some obvious, some less so. The focus here leans towards the latter, buried performances mined like nuggets from the statistical depths. Herewith, the 2001 - and first annual - MLS Gold Mine awards. Sharpshooter award : Anyone can score goals given enough shots. Sure, Jason Kreis of the Dallas Burn scored 7 goals, good for 19th overall (tied with Clint Mathis, Dante Washington, Steve Ralston, Roy Lassiter, Sasha Victorine, and Landon Donavanelite company, to be sure) among the 134 players who scored goals in the MLS this year. But it took him 77 shots, or one goal every 11 shots!
