PRINT PAGE EMAIL ARTICLE ) Font ( ) Font World Soccer/ Commentary : France's Former Coach Speaks Out By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune Wednesday, January 27, 1999 A player can hardly do more than head two key goals to win the World Cup final. Rightly, awards have come to "Zizou" like confetti at a wedding. He embodies, in his own mesmeric way, in his deceptively stooped style, the joy of a humble man made famously rich. And who built that defiant unity? Who began and ended the World Cup vilified by the media? Who plotted the victory that was Zidane's platform? The coach Aime Jacquet is, like two thirds of the trainers at that World Cup, no longer in charge of the national team. Win or lose, Jacquet never intended to stay. He mapped out his future far from the unforgiving public circus; he intended, and to some extent has achieved, a retreat toward the grass roots of teaching the sport to future Zidanes. The fine detail of how Jacquet managed a group of men to maximum effect is published in the January edition of "The Technician" edited by Andy Roxburgh, the technical director of UEFA, the governing body of European soccer.

Last hurrah for Croatia's founding fathers

The 2002 World Cup will be the last major stage for the footballing founding fathers who have helped put the fledgling state of Croatia on the world map. It is just over a decade since Croatia emerged battered and bruised from the bloody war of independence with Yugoslavia and in that time sporting achievement has been one constant source of pride for the young country. Goran Ivanisevic's victory in the Wimbledon's men's singles last year and skier Janica Kostelic's three gold medals in the Winter Olympics may be the most recent examples but it was Croatia's third-place finish in the 1998 World Cup which started the ball rolling. For many - Robert Prosinecki, Robert Jarni and Davor Suker spring to mind - their international careers began with Yugoslavia - all three featured in the Yugoslav under-21 side that won the 1987 World Cup under the stewardship of Mirko Jozic, now in charge of Croatia. Prosinecki was a member of the multi-ethnic Red Star Belgrade team in 1991 that beat Marseille in Bari to win the European Cup, going on for good measure to add the Intercontinental Cup, although that prize was won without Prosinecki, now at Portsmouth.

Are these the 125 greatest living soccer players? Pele seems to think so, but he might be alone...
Graham Hughes, 3/9/2004 As part of its centennial celebrations, FIFA, world soccer's governing body, decided to publish a book of photographs of the 100 greatest living players. The task of compiling the list of players was given to the man widely regarded as the greatest of them all, Pele.
In some ways, Pele was the obvious choice. Not only did he have a spectacularly successful playing career, winning three World Cups with Brazil, the first at the age of 17, he also (unlike, say, Diego Maradona) conducted himself with grace and dignity, and was a superb ambassador for the game.
However, his list was greeted mainly with a mixture of derision and, especially in his homeland, cries of outrage.
For a start, he found himself unable to whittle it down to 100 names, and instead came up with 125. Here they are:
