Why Isn't There a Soccer Network?

James Surowiecki

One of the more perplexingactually, I'll say it's the most perplexingfacts about television today is that there is essentially nowhere, other than pay-per-view, where you can watch international soccer such as the European or FA Cups, let alone regular-season matches from England's Premier League or Italy's Serie A. This depressing fact has already prompted a welcome cri de coeur from Slate contributor Michael Hirschorn in the newest Brill's Content , where he points out how odd it is that in the wasteland that is the upper reaches of the cable box, there's no room for true international stars like David Beckham, Ronaldo, or Davor Suker. But the paradoxical situation is that something that is incredibly valuable abroadRupert Murdoch, you might remember, was willing to shell out $1 billion to acquire the Manchester United franchiseis thought to have little or no value in the United States. And while we might well ask ESPN, "Wouldn't it make more sense to show three great international matches a week instead of six hours of SportsCenter reruns?," it costs ESPN nothing to run the

one of French soccer's stalwarts. A mere one hundred days or so from the World Cup kick-off and the French squad is putting the finishing touches to its arsenal. France has never won or even reached the final of this international encounter, and dreams of brandishing that trophy. But does it really have the fire-power worthy of its ambitions? A look at the line-up.
n 1938, at its first World Cup in front of a home crowd, the French tricolore squad made it through to the quarter-finals of the competition, only to be beaten 3-1 by Italy. Sixty years on and soccer has lost none of its appeal; indeed, it remains the country's No.1 sport. It brings together millions of enthusiasts across the entire social spectrum. France is now hosting the 16 th World Cup and intends to make the most of the occasion so that, for the very first time, it can hold soccer's most prestigious trophy up high.

Current Affairs: Soccer The Beautiful Game Kim du Toit May 23, 2002 Soccer gets a bad rap in the United States (I'll call it "soccer" rather than by its real name, "football", just to avoid confusion by Americans). Perhaps this is because of the countries which play it well (England, Germany, Nigeria, Brazil, Argentina, and France, to name but a few); perhaps it's because it truly is the "People's Sport", played all over the world, by everyone; or perhaps it's just a regrettable reaction against soccer momsin the U.S., largely middle class women (in contrast to the rest of the world, where soccer is the sport of the working class). American journalists mirror this dislike. It should come as no surprise that the elitist

Latest from the changing room... July 2001 June 2001 May 2001 Apr 2001 Oviedo's Keita became the latest player have his licence cancelled in the ongoing passport scandal. Reports said that his French passport had been forged, replacing the name and details of the actual owner with his own. Although this makes one think that he took a crayon and an old photo and changed the details himself, it does not appear to be the case, and the player has not been accused of any misdemeanour. The club are checking with the federation if they can re-register him as a non-EU player, which they say would be possible if they can prove that one of the squad has a long term injury which would keep him out to the end of the season. Tenerife are studying the same move for their Brazilian striker Barata, who has also had his licence removed. Meanwhile Rayo's Bartelt has been thrown out of the club after his licence was revoked, and he has returned to Roma to try and sort things out. The saga goes on. Mar 2001 Feb 2001 The false passport scandal is slowly being unravelled, with a little bit of news every day. There is a saying in Spanish 'en el palacio, todo va despacio', in the palace everything goes slowly, 'palace' usually referring to any government organisation, civil service, law courts etc., but they always get there in the end no matter how long it takes. After the scandal broke in Italy and France the Spanish federation asked the clubs to present all the relevant documentation for their foreign players. Having checked with the central registry in Spain, the first anomaly they found was that there was no trace of Espanyol's Toledo, and the player's licence was therefore withdrawn temporarily pending criminal investigation. Toledo claims his innocence, but at the moment is unable to play. Others are expected to follow in the future, especially players coming from South America with Italian or Portuguese passports.

Another busyand expensivetransfer season highlighted the preparation for a fixture-clogged European season England Manchester United's grip on the Premiership crown was never stronger than it was last year as the club wrapped up the title in a record number of games. This year that grip has been significantly weakened. While Liverpool, Chelsea, and Leeds United continued to make moves in order to overtake the Big Red Machine, United was happy just adding Fabien Barthez to help shore up the team's goaltending. Plus, the club will under significant pressure to secure the services of midfielders David Beckham and Paul Scholes or risk losing one or both to clubs in Italy or Spain more willing to splash out big money for big talent.

History
Jules Rimet, the president of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), suggested in 1926 that an international soccer tournament "could reinforce the ideals of a permanent and real peace." His idea was given impetus by an ongoing and escalating struggle between the FIFA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over control of the sport at the international level. Only teams made up of amateur players were admitted to the Olympics Games, but most of the best players in the world were professionals. After several countries refused to compete in the 1928 Olympics because of the amateur rule, the FIFA voted on May 26, 1928, to hold its own world championship tournament. The tournament was originally to be held in 1929, but it was delayed by financial problems. At a meeting in May of 1929, FIFA Vice-President Rodolfe Seeldrayers proposed that the host country should pay transportation and lodging expenses for the participating teams. At first, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Uruguay offered to host the tournament, but Holland and Sweden withdrew shortly afterward to back Italy as the host country. Gradually, all the European countries withdrew their offers and Uruguay was selected, basically by default.

Yet players crave recognition, and officials, coaches and journalists briefly assume the self-importance to give it to them in the form of annual awards. In Milan on Monday a ballroom heaved with soccer's glitterati. Invited players mooched around like expectant mothers, watching, hoping and waiting. Relax, fellows. Those who read these pages, or who listen to the wind, knew weeks ago that George Weah had scooped the pool. He was merely confirmed Monday as FIFA's world player of 1995, and he already has the golden balls of Africa and Europe for that year. This big man, such a marvelously aggressive athlete when the mood takes him, told the audience Monday: "I would love to play in the World Cup, but I know it will never happen."
