Who's bigger Jordan or Ronaldo?
The original question, verbatim, from an ESPN survey formerly at http://ESPN.SportsZone.com/gen/features/00714005.html The month of June will likely be dominated by two athletes Michael Jordan and Ronaldo. Both are the focal points of team favored to win championships. Both are at the top of sports that are among the most popular around the world. But who's bigger? Who has more fans? Screaming teenage girls? More endorsements? In the U.S., you don't hear much about Ronaldo because soccer doesn't have the same level of popularity as basketball. But is it a different story elsewhere? Make your case for who's bigger on a worldwide scale, especially if you live overseas or have spent time in a country where people are familiar with Ronaldo and Jordan. Fill out the form below and be as specific as possible when comparing the two athletes, using whatever numbers or anecdotes you can think of. My extemporaneous response, submitted 27 May, 1998: To whomever i may be addressing, Who has more supporters? The multinationals that Jordan and Ronaldo endorse.

Ronaldo (right) will join a star-laden side that includes Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo. Shaun Botterill/Getty Images MADRID, Spain (AP) Real Madrid said Saturday it had signed Brazilian star striker Ronaldo from Inter Milan. Madrid sports director Jorge Valdano said just after midnight local time that Ronaldo's signing on a four-year contract was "a very happy day for the club". "It's been a very hectic day but in the end it had a very happy ending," Valdano said. "We are very satisfied. We have signed one of the world's best players." Inter confirmed the deal on its Web site, but did not give any further details. Ronaldo was seen leaving Inter headquarters guarded from fans by a police escort shortly after the deal was announced, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. Opinion: Spoilt Ronaldo puts pressure on himself RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) Brazil's World Cup-winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari described him as "spoilt," while Inter Milan fans have dubbed him "ungrateful."
Whatever you call him, Ronaldo, whose dream move from Inter to Real Madrid finally materialised on Saturday, has put himself under enormous pressure to prove he was not a one-month wonder.

Portugal rejects call to drop Ronaldo, Tiago
Posted: Monday July 26, 2004 7:18PM; Updated: Monday July 26, 2004 7:18PM
LISBON, July 26 (Reuters) Portugal have rejected requests by English clubs Manchester United and Chelsea not to include Cristiano Ronaldo and Tiago Mendes in their Olympic squad. United winger Ronaldo and new Chelsea signing Tiago are expected to miss the start of the English premier league season because of the Olympic Games being held next month in Athens. "We got requests from Chelsea and from Manchester United and we've already responded," Gilberto Madail, chairman of the Portuguese Soccer Federation, told the Mais Futebol website. "We said that we're sorry, but we are counting on the two players for the Olympic tournament, since the rules of (world soccer's governing body) FIFA are very clear on this issue," Madail said. He said the Olympic Games soccer tournament, which starts on August 11, was an official competition and Portugal had no alternative but to include the players whom he described as "essential" to the squad. Ronaldo, who played a major role in host Portugal's run to the Euro 2004 final, and midfielder Tiago have been joined by Fulham's Luis Boa Morte as an over-age player alongside VfB Stuttgart defender Fernando Meira and Boavista's Nuno Frechaut.

Ronaldo Luíz Nazário de Lima (born September 22, 1976), simply known as Ronaldo, plays forward for Brazil and Real Madrid. He is arguably the best striker to play soccer after Pelé. He has been nicknamed o fenômeno (the "phenomenon").
Beginning of the Phenomenon Ronaldo's soccer skills were first recognized when he was fourteen. He was recommended to the Brazil Youth Team by World Cup winner Jairzinho, who also arranged for his own former club, Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, to sign the boy when he was old enough for a professional contract. In 1993, aged sixteen, Ronaldo had already scored 59 goals in 57 matches for Brazil's under-17 squad. Europe By 1994 he had joined the national senior squad, although he did not actually play in the 1994 World Cup in the USA. Ronaldo's European career began when he joined Dutch club PSV Eindhoven for the 1994-1995 season. He became the Dutch top scorer, and attracted the attention of Spain's FC Barcelona. He played for Barça in the 1996-1997 Season, scoring 34 goals in 37 appearances; then he transferred to Inter Milan the following year. Low Point Voted the world's best player in 1996 and 1997, he had a comparatively disappointing performance during the 1998 World Cup, scoring only four goals. Brazil lost the final to the hosts France after he was ill the night before. Some questioned the decision to play Ronaldo in the final because of the possible physiological aftereffects of the illness. It began nearly four years of career nightmares for the Brazilian striker.

Cristiano Ronaldo - Growing Up
Soccer star, Cristiano Ronaldo , was born on February 5, 1985 on the island of Madeira, which is a few hundred miles south of Portugal . He grew up in a small house in the city of Funchal and began playing soccer for a youth team in Madeira, where his dad was the team's equipment manager. Cristiano Ronaldo was a huge soccer star on the Island but he moved 600 miles to Lisbon when he was just 12 years old to play for Sporting Lisbon's youth team. The move was a difficult one for Cristiano, since he was away from his family and many of his teammates made fun of his Madeiran accent.
Cristiano Ronaldo - Teenage Soccer Star

      Ronaldo
'The Phenomenon' may be back, but his return to full fitness continues to be dogged by doubts over whether he will ever be the same player again. In late January, Ronaldo strained a thigh muscle in training which put him out of action for three weeks.
His return to Brazil for treatment only fuelled speculation about his true physical condition. Ronaldo's recent injury history is well documented. In November 1998, in a League game against Lecce, he ripped ligaments in his right knee.
He was out a year - and then suffered a similar injury the following November, again against Lecce. In April 2000 his comeback, in an Italian cup semi-final against Lazio, was wrecked when the knee collapsed again.
Yet more surgery and a delicately-planned convalescence brought Ronaldo back to the first-team squad in July this year, though it was only in November that coach Hector Cuper has dared expose Ronaldo to the full-frontal challenge of Serie A.
He scored his first comeback goal against Brescia then two more against Verona, when even rival fans applauded. Before his latest setback, he remained upbeat about his future.

      Ronaldo
RONALDO: I've hardly stopped in these past few months. I've been doing two training sessions a day - morning and afternoon - which is quite an achievement, and it has been no problem. It's been so great to kick a ball around again - I've missed it so much. I can now kick a ball reasonably gently and I've been able to take part in some little games, just kickabouts between friends, like you do when you're a kid - two against two, three against three, that sort of thing. They know not to touch me, and that they have to let me score!
Do you have any idea when you will be ready for thereal thing?
It's pointless trying to guess. I've been reading and hearing that I'm going to be back in March or April. All I'll say is it doesn't so much matter when I return - though it willbe before the start of the next season - as that I come back only when I'm truly ready. I can't risk coming back too soon. I know Inter are waiting for me and I am very keen to help my team-mates getback on top, so waiting a little while longer will be worth it.
Inter really need you. They've had a nightmare without you.
