Soccer Fans Network Forums The Americas Brazilian Soccer PDA View Full Version : romario? give it up! Severus 03-29-2001, 05:45 AM when is brasil going to give up on this guy? don't get me wrong, i'm sure he'd be effective as a sub but for him to be considered a starter simply means to me that brasil are lacking in depth. the speedy young defenders would have a field day with the him. Garrincha 04-07-2001, 05:51 PM No offense, but what was the last time you've seen Romario play? He's in great form, shining and scoring like crazy - last year he was Brazilian champion breaking his own goalscoring records, with over 60 goals in the season. He's not as fast as he used to be, but he's by FAR smarter and more talented than 90% other players. In this pathethic time we live in, where anybody who scores a couple of times gets overpriced and becomes an overnight superstar (examples? Anelka, Denilson, Crespo, Bierhoff), Romario is one of the last few reamining true geniuses. As the italians say it, a "fuoriclassi" (did I spell it right? ;-)). Trust me, he's back on the Brazil squad because he's demontrated that there isn't anyone better than him at what he does. And we Brazilians know good soccer when we see it... Soccer stars play for Haitian children
1994 World Cup champions poses with school children By Kate Donovan NEW YORK, 16 November 2004 – Legendary football players from Brazil (winners of the 1994 World Cup) took on the Haitian National team in Miami last Saturday in a game to benefit the children of Haiti whose lives have been affected by Tropical Storm Jeanne. Five dollars from each of the tickets sold will go directly to supporting UNICEF’s work for Haitian children. In addition, UNICEF sold commemorative T-shirts to raise additional funds. Brazilian star striker Romario promised to donate $2,000 for children, plus an additional $1000 for every goal he scored. For one young soccer player, it was a night to remember. Kaila Jospitre, 8, was one of 50 children who escorted the players onto the field. After her moment in the spotlight, Kaila settled into the stands to root for her heroes on her favourite team – Haiti – and to chat with her friends, under the eye of her father and his friends a few rows back. “I like all the friends you meet when you play,” she said. “I really like it when you win, ‘cause all the fun and parties you have afterwards.”

Life's a beach for Romario
Former World Cup striker Romario was called up by Brazil again on Thursday for a beach soccer tournament. The 39-year-old, who is still playing for Vasco da Gama, was included in the squad for a Beach Soccer World Cup qualifying tournament in Rio de Janeiro next month. "On the pitch, he's a player like few others and he worries the opponents. Off the pitch, he's got a big name, he attracts the supporters," said Brazil coach Jorge Ferreira Alves. It was not immediately clear how Romario would fit in the tournament with his club commitments. Romario has scored two goals for Vasco since rejoining them in January and is expected to end his career at the end of the Carioca championship in April. He was excused for Wednesday's Copa Brasil tie away to Uniao Rondonopolis to spare him the 11-hour plane and bus journey. Romario last played for Brazil in a World Cup qualifier away to Uruguay in 2001.

Romario to miss Sydney
Brian Homewood in Rio de Janeiro Brazil coach Wanderley Luxemburgo is standing by his decision not to take Romario to the Sydney Olympics despite an intense media campaign for the veteran striker's inclusion. A statement issued by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) on Wednesday said: "Wanderley understands and respects the wishes of the player but the decision made by the staff and the CBF is to take only players under the age of 23. "If the decision had been to take over-age players then Romario would have been among the favourites for his will and his quality as a player." The Olympic soccer tournament is limited to players under 23 but each team can field up to three over-age players. Luxemburgo, coach of both Brazil's senior and Olympic teams, announced his squad on Friday and said he had decided against taking older players so that he could reward the squad who qualified the country in the first place. Brazil have never won the Olympic soccer tournament and Romario, who is nearing his 35th birthday, has made public his desire to make history and add an Olympic gold to the World Cup winners medal he won in 1994.

“Romario was sent to us by the good Lord.” The comment made by team coach Carlos Alberto Parreira expresses the esteem that the striker enjoys in his home country. Anyone wanting to explain Brazil’s fourth World Cup triumph at the FIFA World Cup 1994 ™ in the USA almost automatically mentions the name Romario. A kind of Romario mania broke out that year in the South American country.
Though Romario remained goal-less during the 120 minutes of the 1994 World Cup final in USA, he was one of the scorers in Brazil’s 3-2 penalty shoot win against Italy. Kunz/Augenklick
The “grandson” of the great Pele became the new wonder striker. Romario played in all seven World Cup games and thanked his coach Parreira by scoring five goals, setting up three goals and converting a spot kick in the penalty shoot-out at the end of the final. With the scores still level 0-0 after 120 minutes of play, it was all down to penalties to decide the outcome. Whilst other stars like the Italians Roberto Baggio and Franco Baresi failed, Romario – along with Branco and Carlos Dunga – kept his nerves at bay and contributed a penalty to make the final score 3-2. Brazil had therefore added a fourth title to the ones already won in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

USA 1994: Brazil set record with fourth triumph Brazil chalked up a record fourth World Cup triumph in USA 94 and were worthy winners even though a penalty shoot out settled their final showdown with Italy. The Brazilians had the brightest star of the tournament in Romario, who scored five goals including a semi-final winner against Sweden. Brazil cruised through their group matches, beating Russia and Cameroon and drawing 1-1 with Sweden - Romario scoring in each game. But Italy only just scraped through into the second round after falling victims to Jack Charlton's Republic of Ireland in their opening game in New York. Ray Houghton's 12th-minute goal stunned the Italians and the Irish defended sensibly to claim a memorable victory. Charlton's men went on to clinch a place in the second round but their glorious run ended with a 2-0 defeat against Holland.

Tricky maneuver leaves footballer Romario out USD 4.5 million
The celebrated Brazilian soccer player Romario has fallen victim to a Polish swindler, Petr O. Mikhal Blayersky, a prosecutor for the suburban district of Lublin, made the announcement Wednesday after interrogating the victim.
Preliminary information indicates that Romario trusted the swindler with USD 4.85 million-for what purpose, the representative of the prosecutor's office declined to reveal on grounds that it must be kept confidential for purposes of the investigation. As reported by PAP, Petr O., 36, himself revealed while in custody in Lublin in February that, acting as financial consultant for Romario, he had helped him make profitable investments from which at a certain point he took as a reward USD 4.85 million.
At the time of his arrest, authorities found several fake passports, health certificates, a diploma as an economist and a large quantity of commercial paper in his home.

World Cup 2002 News Match Reports Euro 2000 News Match Reports Search this site: 2002 World Cup - Brazil 5 Bolivia First Published: Sep 04, 2000 Romario is back and so the "samba" team is working again. Sunday's World Cup qualifying match at the Maracana witnessed Romario Da Souza's return to international football after two years and his performance allowed Brazilian fans to forget recent attacking problems for Wanderley Luxemburgo's team. Bolivia had little chance to do anything but suffer from the Brazilian's superb display. In the 12th minute Vampeta was fouled in the area by goalkeeper Mauricio Soria and Romario scored from the penalty spot. He almost scored again only six minutes later when young star Ronaldinho found him with a neat pass but Romario's shot hit the post. One minute after the break Rivaldo headed into the net a good pass from Cafu and then the real "fiesta" began. Nine minutes later again Rivaldo got a header but this time the ball hit the bar as Brazil exuded quality. Now it was time for the Romario-Vampeta conection; two superb passes from the Roma star allowed Romario to score twice in the 77th and 81st minutes. Only Ecuador symbol Marco Etcheverry, who came on as a substitute, was able to create some danger to Dida's goal but his side had its mind off the pitch. Finally Marques, one minute before the end of the match, hit a shot that was deflected by defender Marco Standy into the net.
