Gleaning a month worth of soccer lessons

What are the primary lessons of the 2002 FIFA World Cup? Let's start with Lesson No. 1, made evident in the Cup final Sunday by Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Lucio, Marcos, Denilson and all those other guys with one name. Never, ever, count Brazil out of a tournament, especially one as mighty as the World Cup. The bigger the stage, the better for the "Penatcampeao," the five-time world champion. Brazil made amends for its loss in the 1998 final with a convincing 2-0 victory over Germany on Sunday in Yokohama, Japan. Lesson No. 2, one pounded home in earlier matches by the USA, South Korea, Turkey and Senegal, is that the playing field is leveling out. Landon Donovan and friends showed that the Americans can compete with the world's soccer powers. A fourth-place finish in the 2000 Olympics, followed by the U.S. march to the final eight in the World Cup, is not a fluke.

Soccer Dribbling Moves
The Stop and Go
For this move - the key is a change of pace. Jog slowly with the ball, usually done when a defender is along side of you, and then burst past the defender. Again, jog nonchalantly along with the ball, stop for a second, and then burst past the defender. You can also put the sole of your foot on top of the ball for a second when you stop the ball, and then push it forward with your instep when you break off on the dribble again to escape the defender.
The Cut Back (The Cruyff) With the inside of the foot cut the ball back behind your body. For example, when using your right foot to cut the ball back you plant your left foot to the side of the ball and then bring your right foot up to cut the ball back. The reverse if you are cutting the ball back with your left foot. This can often look like a fake shot. Dribbling away from a defender into space you chop the ball back with the inside of the foot - then dribble off in that opposite direction. Start by dribbling the ball forward and plant your left foot near the ball as your right leg "winds-up" for a big kick or shot. Instead of shooting however, bring the right foot down and "chop" the ball backwards and underneath your left leg.
The Fake Shot or Cross Simply bringing the leg back like you are going to shoot can buy you time. Bring the leg back as though you are going to make a pass or take a shot and then stop just in front of the ball - cut the ball to the left or right to set yourself up for your next play.

Zidane's second-half awakening in the Finals keyed Les Bleus push for the title and capped a tournament which put to rest most of the debate about who is the world's greatest soccer player and the sport's finest playmaker. Zidane simply owned the early rounds al the Lowlands. His ability to control a game from central midfield is unparalleled in today's game. As a result, he is often hailed as a throwback to soccer's supposed golden age and one of the few players who truly deserves the mythical No. 10 jersey.

AFTER A YEAR'S WORTH OF anniversary-related articles, it has all come down to this: the 25 greatest players of the past quarter century. Some were obvious choices (Diego Maradona, Michel Platini, and Lothar Matthaus among others), and some were grueling decisions. Let's face it: There are plenty of deserved stars. If your favorites didn't make the cut, drop us a line and tell us why you think they should have been included. We used the same criteria to determine our top players as we did for our top coaches: Those selected had to make a substantial impact over the past quarter century. Therefore, we've left out legends such as Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, and Johan Cruyff, who enjoyed their best performances prior to 1977.

We welcome your feedback NEWSLETTER Send us your email to subscribe to our newsletter DISABLED-FRIENDLY FUNCTIONALITY Brazil put away Turkey, set up historic clash with Germany Saitama, June 26 By Nimish Dubey A brilliant goal from Rivaldo gave Brazil a 1-0 victory over Turkey in their World Cup semi-final. Brazil will now face Germany in Sunday's final, the first ever meeting between the two teams in the tournament. It was an entertaining clash with both teams displaying some spectacular soccer. Brazil however were easily the better side, having more shots at goal and looked far more formidable in attack. That said, Turkey put up an outstanding show and at times matched their more illustrious rivals, pass for pass. But in the end, Brazil were too good for them, setting up their first ever match against Germany in World Cup history. Brazil sprung no surprises in their line-up, preferring to bring in Kleberson for the suspended Ronaldinho. Turkey too decided to steer clear of experimnetation, keeping faith with Hakan Sukur in spite of his less than impressive performance in the quarter-finals. Brazil took the field in their traditional yellow shirts and blue shorts while Turkey appeared in an all red kit.

Have your say! Rui Mesquita 16-03-2001, 02:48:AM Right now, IMHO, Figo is the best of the four. He is the best dribbler, the most influent player, and generally the best passer. A very lethal passer indeed, perhaps the best passer from the wing since Garrincha.
Zidane comes second. Even though I rate him as highly as Figo, I think Zidane hasn't played to his level this year, perhaps because Zidane is the player who only rises to the big occasion. I don't mean that he isn't consistent, it's just that he seems to get on only when big things are at stake, so he isn't so impressive at minor games (and you know that sometimes Zidane can flare up a bit too much in these minor matches).
Rivaldo is a great finisher, has the greatest ball control, and he has speed and power to his game, but I don't see him as a competitor, such as Figo and Zidane. While playing for Barcelona, he has been missing the extra stuff, the "wish for emulation", that could lead Barça to european glory.
Beckham is a different case. Figo, Zidane and Rivaldo are more or less all-around players, Beckham is a specialist. He is the best crosser, he is the best in free kicks, but otherwise he hasn't the fantastic combination of skills that makes the other three football superstars. Football genius as he is, I think Beckham falls a bit "off cathegory" when compared to them.

Personally I enjoy it more when a sports game has stars for players. This game has all the stars from 32 countries and over 100 soccer clubs from 6 regions, and they are world class! Ported from the EA Sports' title, FIFA 2002 for Pocket PC is easily one of the best soccer titles on Pocket PC. The graphics are very nice and the movements are smooth. You can see the audience in the first few rolls, though in a very rough outline. The ball movements are very smooth and clear, which makes the game play fun. The music is upbeat to compliment the game play. You can hear the cheers from the audience, but you won't hear anyone shouting "GOAL" when you score.

A NIGHT of extravagant skill at Camp Nou was distinguished by the individual genius of the remarkable Brazilian, Rivaldo.
The elegant midfielder adorned a significant and memorable occasion with an eloquent demonstration of all that is good in the game and deserved more than to figure on a losing team.It is true a frenetic match ended in a draw but the result effectively wiped out Barcelona's hopes of winning the European prize in their centenary year. The result was an enormous source of frustration and disappointment to a committed local following.
But Manchester United themselves contributed generously to a game that was full of life and vibrancy and they had, in Dwight Yorke, an exceptional player of their own.
Yorke had proved to be a remarkably successful addition to United even before this night and he chose the grand stage to illustrate his rich talent.
He formed with Andy Cole a deadly partnership up front that tormented the heart of a Barcelona defence that was cruelly robbed of a specialist centre-back when they needed one most.

Rivaldo would be perfect as playmaker in United midfield
by Bill George
Barcelona
The Brazilian star of Wednesday's six-goals spectacular in Camp Nou is just the type of player Feguson needs if he is to complete a team with sufficient quality to dominate Europe.
Rivaldo showed the midfield creative skill and finishing that Manchester United lack as the Old Trafford side succeeded in taking a point from Barcelona that keeps them right on course to advance in the European Champions' League.
It is a task that is well within their compass as they showed when drawing with Bayern in the Munich Olympic stadium last month.
Since then United have blossomed with the front-line partnership of Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole growing ever more effective and showing the sort of penetration up front that will ensure United will have to be respected.
Ferguson might well believe that United are strong enough now to win the Champions' league and bring the main European trophy back to Old Trafford for the first time since 1968.
Rivaldo would be ineligible this season as he has already represented Barcelona in the competition but Ferguson would surely acknowledge that the marvellous Brazilian would bring special skills to United's squad.
