History
When the 1994 World Cup tournament was awarded to the United States, US Soccer promised to help establish a Division I outdoor soccer league as soon as possible after the tournament ended. World Cup USA Chairman Alan I. Rothenberg announced plans for Major League Soccer (MLS) on Dec. 17, 1993. Twenty-two cities submitted bids for teams. In October of 1995, it was announced that MLS would begin play in March of 1996 with ten teams: the Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, D. C. United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, MetroStars, New England Revolution, San Jose Clash, and Tampa Bay Mutiny. The Chicago Fire and Miami Fusion were added as expansion teams in 1998. The MLS originally had two conferences, but was reorganized into three divisions, with four teams each, in 2000. However, the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny were dropped before the 2002 season, and the league went back to the two-conference format. The MLS did away with the penalty shootout in 2000. If a game is tied after regulation time, the teams play two five-minute overtime periods. If the score is still tied, that's the final result.

Odds and Ends Hi all,
Here's an old link to a good piece on Kreis , after he became the first player in MLS to score 100 goals, from Marc Connolly, who writes for MLS and ESPN.
Ballots are due this week for the U.S. men's national team player of the year. A heated debate broke out here between the few soccer aficionados at our place, over who the winner should be. Landon Donovan is the obvious, and consensus, vote. He's been voted Honda's player of the year for three years running.
I say give it to the keeper. Who did as much as Keller , in the early WC qualification process , and who's more appreciative of his recent good play? Nobody. 2:11 PM 3 comments

Kreis is finished Without a doubt, no questions asked, the heart of Real Salt Lake lives in Jason Kreis.

In-depth coverage of American soccer Friday, September 16, 2005 Earthquakes make first trip to Utah to face RSL Expansion team is no pushover
by Mitch Diamond San Jose, CA, April 28,2005 (ASN) The San Jose Earthquakes face off with Real Salt Lake for the first time ever this Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Quakes come into Utah off their first win of the season, a 3-2 edging of the Kansas City Wizards in San Jose. The victory boosted the teaminto third place with five points in the Western Conference. Another U.S. National Team regular now with RSL is offensive midfielder Clint Mathis. Somewhat of a free spirit and sporting a Mohawk at one time, Mathis spent 2004 playing for the German club team Hannover 96. After a mid-season coaching change, Mathis saw much less playing time and was not shy expressing his displeasure about his drop in status. Disagreement with the coaching staff led to his return to the MLS where RSL picked up is contract. RLS coach John Ellinger had coached Mathis at the 1997 World University Games and welcomed him to the squad. In contrast to their suspect defense, the Quakes boast a potent offense. Brian Ching leads MLS in scoring with three goals and two assists, while fellow striker Ronald Cerritos has two goals and two assists. Brad Davis leads the league in assists with four...

by Alex Moffett
Joey Franchino (L) moves in on Craig Zaide Boston, MA. June 28, 2004 (CSA) The New England Revolution broke a lengthy winless streak by defeating the New York Metrostars 2-1 at Gillette Stadium on Saturday evening. Decimated by injuries and at the foot of the Eastern conference, the Revs, it's fair to say, were hardly favorites for this game against the division leaders. Alarmingly for fans, New England's starting lineup was only supported by two field player substitutes, a situation they've been facing for the last few games. But in the world of MLS, these things matter less than they might in some other leagues, and on this beautiful Saturday evening, the Revs put in a dogged performance. For Metros coach Bob Bradley, flush from a midweek 3-0 victory over Los Angeles, the main selection difficulty was which striker combo to put out for this match. Bradley opted for Mike Magee and John Wolyniec, relegating the awfully inconsistent Fabian Taylor and the consistently awful Sergio Galvan Rey to the bench.

United States soccer player Kasey Keller, center, holds the Gold Cup trophy with team-mates after beating Panama in the Gold Cup final match yesterday at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
Click photo for larger image. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Brad Davis ended a long day and a long tournament, regaining the CONCACAF Gold Cup for a depleted U.S. soccer team that will limp into its next World Cup qualifier. Santino Quaranta, Landon Donovan and Davis converted their shots and goalkeeper Kasey Keller stopped Panama's first attempt, leading the United States to a 3-1 win on penalty kicks following a bland, scoreless tie yesterday in the final of soccer's North and Central American and Caribbean championship. "We've got to rally the troops, get the Band-Aids out and try to get 11 guys on the field to play on Aug. 17," said U.S. coach Bruce Arena, looking ahead to the World Cup qualifier against Trinidad and Tobago at East Hartford, Conn. "The travel, the heat, the field conditions, the officiating, it took a huge toll on us. We lost four players the other night to the team that got the fair play award." Ejected from the semifinal win over Honduras on Thursday night, Arena was suspended for the final and watched from a box in the stands. The Americans, who also won this tournament in 1991 and 2002, had only 17 players available because of injuries.

Will it go back to normal?: The U.S. Soccer Federation did the unthinkable, calling replacement players to camp before labor dispute was settled
By Brian Shaw Published: Friday, February 11, 2005 The U.S. men's national soccer team defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 Wednesday behind goals from forward Eddie Johnson of FC Dallas in the 30th minute and Eddie Lewis [Fulham (England)]in the 54th.
The U.S. is now 1-0-0 and has three points as they begin the final round of qualifying for FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany. The U.S starting 11 had eight European-based players with significant national team experience. That wasn't necessarily the way the U.S. roster looked several weeks ago.
Not only was the anticipated victory- and three points-in question (though the United States is ranked No. 11 in the world), but also the plan the U.S. Soccer Federation had to use replacement players from the United Soccer Leagues, the U.S. minor league soccer system, raised a few eyebrows. In other words, you would not see Real's Clint Mathis or Eddie Pope in red, white and blue. Instead you would have seen players who had never been given the chance to play for the "Nats."
