Petit to stick with Gunners
by Bill Pierce
EMMANUEL PETIT is back for part two of Arsenal's titanic FA Cup semi-final collision with Manchester United at Villa Park tonight. However, on the debit side Marc Overmars is ruled out with an ankle injury.
And Petit has pledged his future to the club despite speculation-fuelled fears that he would quit in disgust over the treatment he has had in England from referees.
The exit signs were erected when French World Cup hero Petit was sent off for the third time against Everton a month ago, landing him with yet another suspension in Arsenal's red card-bedevilled season just as he was making his way back from an ankle injury.
But Sunday's goalless stalemate at Villa Park enabled Petit to complete his latest three-match ban and regain full fitness.
Now he's raring to go against United and insists: ''I will definitely be at Arsenal next season - and I would like to meet again the man who said I would not be.''
Petit's comeback will considerably ease the blow of Dutch winger Marc Overmars' almost certain absence from the replay through an injury collected in Sunday's game.

Keane stays upbeat despite injury ruling out Irwin
by David Anderson
ROY KEANE refuses to accept Manchester United have missed their best chance of Wembley glory against Arsenal.
United failed to kill off Arsenal in their FA Cup semi-final after the Gunners had been reduced to 10 men following Nelson Vivas' red card.
Arsenal's resolute defence held on in extra-time and the cup holders almost snatched a late winner through substitute Fredrik Ljungberg.
And now United must plan without Denis Irwin who was yesterday ruled out of tomorrow night's FA Cup semi-final replay and Ferguson admits he is contemplating other changes.
There could be other switches, according to Ferguson, who says:
''I could possibly make one or two changes. I have to look at that part.
''I have some players playing very well at present, young Phil was excellent when he came on and he will replace Denis and we will just have to look at one or two others. Denis is the only one who is injured.''
Good news for Arsenal is that Emmanuel Petit returns from suspension, but Keane insists the tie is still delicately poised.

This is the end...
Let me explain my thinking. For a start, when has Wenger made a mistake selling/releasing a player? Did we see the best of Marc Overmars or Emmanuel Petit at Barcelona? I made my feelings about important midfielders clear last week ever Yes, the likes of Vieira et al in line. Even when ill-prepared for change, as he was when Anelka announced his departure, he managed to find Thierry Henry. permanent link Comments: Hey Footie, interesting and insightful. posted by Wayne : 10:43 PM Well said and I agree. The Hleb Fabregas combination will be a winner. Add the Beast and we're in business! posted by Anonymous : 7:12 PM 3 years in a row the captain of your club mulls over leaving, of course you will be better off without him. Thing is after a rather low key season last year don't you wish you got that £25 million from Madrid 12 months ago? Wenger is certainly no mug, looking back in hindsight he got rid of overmars and petit at the right time. Ferguson did the same at United replacing Ince Kanchelskis with the likes of Scholes and Beckham. Fabregas, i'm sure will have just as big an impact with Arsenal posted by Anonymous : 3:00 PM Its all lovely stuf jord but i think it'll be accademic come the shake up. You'll be feeling blue again come the start of next summer.

I'm not going to mention Vie... Arsenal have apparently reserved the no23 shirt for Sol Campbell, a number popular due to it being the favourite of one Micheal Jordan. In the meantime Arsenal are making a move for free agent Pep Guardiola from Barca. Aston Villa are persisting in their attempts to sign West Ham's Freddie Kanute , I would be surprised if the Hammers let him go without a substantial fight after losing Lampard and possibly Di Canio too. Southampton have a replacement for deserter and weirdo Glenn Hoddle, temporary manager Stuart Gray has been promoted to manager, "We've chosen the best man for the job," said Rupert Lowe. Everton have apparently agreed a four year deal with Anderlecht striker Tomasz Radzinski as a replacement for noveau gunner Fran Jeffers. permanent link Thursday, June 28, 2001
There's more to football than Vieira ......Or maybe not. Arsenal are to take action against dodgy agent Marc Roger for allegedly contacting Real Madrid offering Paddy for sale - an illegal action under FIFA guidelines which could lead to the troublemaker being banned from the game for some period of time. Meanwhile Arsenal are hopeful that Wenger can convince the snooker ball headed frenchman to stay. Arsenal are reported to be after (some say have had a bid accepted) 21 year old Japanese star Junichi Inamoto , after watching him the the Confederations Cup I reckon he'd be a good signing - not even considering the vast marketing oportunities that a Japanese international in the ranks would provide.

Brazil beat the United States 3-0 in the quarter finals of the Under-17 World Championships and will play Colombia in the semi-finals , Wednesday 27 August 2003. The Brazilians were superior technically and tactically to the US team which still has many lessons to learn. - But US Boy Wonder, Freddy Adu, showed that he has the skill and physique to develop into a fully fledged soccer star. Despite this defeat - there is no doubt that the future of US Soccer is in place and winning days will surely come. In the other quarter final tie, Spain, had an easy 5-2 win over Portugal and will face Argentine for a place in the Final.

This year that grip has been significantly weakened. While Liverpool, Chelsea, and Leeds United continued to make moves in order to overtake the Big Red Machine, United was happy just adding Fabien Barthez to help shore up the team's goaltending. Plus, the club will under significant pressure to secure the services of midfielders David Beckham and Paul Scholes or risk losing one or both to clubs in Italy or Spain more willing to splash out big money for big talent.

Champions can challenge again FRANCE PROFILE: Despite a weakened defence, the French could still be looking at two-in-a-row writes Paul Doyle As World and European Champions, not to mention Confederation Cup holders (!), France are foremost amongst the favourites to lift the global crown again next summer. Firstly, what to do with his decaying defence. If Laurent Blanc and Marcel Desailly guaranteed rigidity at the rear in previous campaigns, there is no such security any more. Blanc has retired from international football (and, much to Alex Ferguson’s chagrin, isn’t especially active in club football any more either), and Desailly’s club career is regularly hampered by either injury or arrogance. Lemerre can at least be pleased by the way Desailly has improved at Chelsea in recent months, but he still needs to draft in a new partner for the veteran. And if Desailly is not fit or in form, Lemerre will need a defensive heart transplant. And at the moment, that seems to mean entrusting the fate of

The upside of violence in Israel? Better soccer.
By Franklin Foer

Forget Cameron Indoor. At the moment, there's no more imposing home field in the world than Bloomfield Stadium , the 17,000-seat residence of the Israeli soccer club Hapoel Tel Aviv. As the Israelis compete for the UEFA Cup—one of the two great European championships—opposing players have concocted all sorts of excuses to avoid the place. Take the London powerhouse Chelsea, which visited Bloomfield last October. The team's notoriously hard-nosed captain, Marcel Desailly, skipped the trip. He told reporters that a dental infection had spread to his Achilles' tendon—a difficult condition to imagine and an excuse undermined by his own coach's announcement that he had planned on skipping Tel Aviv even before his "injury." His teammate midfielder Emmanuel Petit also refused to go, claiming the need to nurse his bruised and beaten body. On the day before the match, however, tabloid photographers spotted Petit happily shopping with his wife in Central London. In all, six of Chelsea's best players finked out. The team that did show up, comprised mostly of second-stringers and unripened teen-agers, lost to Hapoel by two goals. Traveling among the soccer thugs, it's not uncommon for visiting teams to fear for their lives. But no squad in history has improved quite so much thanks to the fear of violence. Although they're not even the dominant team in Israel, Hapoel won home matches against a raft of much richer, more storied European

September/October 1998 Volume 49, Number 5 September/October 1998
Volume 49, Number 5 Rhapsody in Bleu Written by George Baramki Azar French soccer midfielder Zinedine Zidane rose to the challenge of the World Cup in epic style. His crowning two-goal performance in the Cup final July 12th turned an unlikely dream into astonishing reality as he led the underdog French national team, Les Bleus, to a 3-0 rout of the supposedly invincible Brazilian soccer machine. Around the world, fans and writers called Zizou's game one of the greatest in World Cup history. As the final whistle sounded and the French squad swarmed onto the field past the stunned Brazilians, Paris exploded in the wildest celebration since its liberation from Nazi occupation half a century ago. In every part of the French capital, young and old, rich and poor poured onto the streets. Car horns resounded in a chorus of chaos and trainloads of strangers aboard the Paris Metro erupted into boisterous renditions of "La Marseillaise," the French national anthem. Within two hours of the victory, a crowd estimated at more than a million people turned the Champs Elysees into a sea of celebration, of which Zidane was clearly the hero: The chant "Zizou for president!" kept recurring. Unfazed, President Jacques Chirac, who had attended the match, declared, "This is the best day of my life."
