    18 July 2005
NEW YORK: Even Pele, the man who coined the phrase "The Beautiful Game," admits there are a few ugly blemishes on the face of modern-day soccer.
Although he supports rule changes to counter cynical tackles, blatant time-wasting, diving, barely concealed shirt-pulling and delaying tactics at free-kicks, the greatest player of all time draws the line at using video technology. That, he says, would interrupt the flow of the game, even though it might solve arguments over goals such as Liverpool's winner against Chelsea in May's European Champions League semi-final in which there was no conclusive evidence that the ball had crossed the goal line. "I think the technology can help but not on this point because in soccer you cannot stop the game and say 'Okay, let's see if it was a goal or not' like in American Football."

At the open-air screening at the Cinema de la Plage, festival-goers are invited to discover Pelé Eterno by Anibal Massaini Neto. Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday June 01, 1999 03:40 PM Pele was a soccer phenomenon not only in Brazil, but in the U.S. and other countries. Allsport UK/Allsport By Hank Hersch It is not a long time, 27 months. Not long enough to spread the gospel of soccer to a nation that does not much care about it, to sway the doubters and charm the corporations and reconvert the immigrants who had discarded the sport as an Old World relic. On June 10, 1975, the North American Soccer League was playing to four-digit crowds in oversized stadiums and subsisting on agate type. That was the day 34-year-old Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known all over the planet as Pelé, came to New York to sign a three-year, $4.5 million deal with the Cosmos, telling a public baffled by his choice, "I looked and saw another mountain to climb." It was enough time, 27 months, to scale another summit. With Pelé demonstrating the wondrous possibilities of soccer, the number of players registered with the U.S. Soccer Federation nearly quadrupled in that time period, from a little more than 100,000 to 400,000. With Pelé's Cosmos pursuing the 1977 NASL championship an event whose climax five years before had drawn only 6,102 people and caused little more than a ripple in the local media some 77,000 fans and 140 journalists attended a Cosmo playoff match at Giants Stadium. Said Franz Beckenbauer, the West German hero and a Cosmo teammate who had followed Pelé's lead to the U.S., "I have had many great moments in my career, but the greatest honor was to play with Pelé."

Late last week, rootsy country singer Wylie Gustafson made headlines by filing suit against internet portal Yahoo, claiming that the company hasn't been reimbursing him for the tagline, a yodeled "Yahooo-ooo," that the company uses in most of its TV and radio spots. Now there's a settlement. No one's saying if Gustafson received anything near the $5 million he was demanding. For that matter, nothing about the terms of the settlement are being made public. But Gustafson has been placated to the extent that he's letting Yahoo keep using his yodel. Gustafson, who fronts the band Wylie and the Wild West, said that he'd been paid a measly $590 for use of his voice and that Yahoo said it would use it in just one spot.

While Yahoo has curtailed its free services in the U.S. to make up for sliding advertising revenue, its Brazilian unit will launch a free internet access program this week as part of a joint venture with telecommunications company Brasil Telecom. Yahoo currently stands as the third most popular portal after Universo Online and iG, attracting 3.8 million users, according to Ibope/NetRatings. Yahoo moved into the broadband access game in Japan in September 2001 and joined the business in the U.S. last November.
