Pel (b. Edson Arantes do Nascimento, October 23, 1940, Tres Coraes, Brazil), Afro-Brazilian soccer player, considered by many to be the greatest in the history of the game, and one of the most recognized black people in the world. Born in a small town in the state of Minas Gerais with a semiprofessional soccer player as a father, Edson Arantes do Nascimento grew up in the city of Bauru. There he occasionally attended school and performed odd jobs until, while still an adolescent, he began to play for the local youth soccer team. It was at this time that he acquired the nickname "Pel," by which he is now known throughout the world. At 15, Pel was transferred to Santos, a team in the much larger port city with the same name. Pel would play for Santos for most of his career, and he would forever become associated with its white Number 10 shirt, along with the yellow shirt of the Brazilian national team.
In the 18 years that Pel played at Santos, the club team won numerous state and national championships in Brazil and two world club championships, in 1962 and 1963. During what has been called Pel's reign (in Brazil he is referred to as "King Pel"), Santos frequently toured throughout the world and enormous crowds gathered wherever they played.
In Asia, Africa, and Europe, fans paid homage to this black Brazilian. Concerned that such devotion might result in offers for Pel to play for teams in richer countries, in 1962 the Brazilian Congress declared the

Soccer Legend Pele Goes Mobile with Global Wireless Entertainment
LOS ANGELES (Business Wire) May 20, 2005 Soccer legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known internationally as Pele, has signed an exclusive agreement with Global Wireless Entertainment (GWE) to usher the superstar into mobile communications marketing.
GWE plans to develop, distribute and market a series of 2D and 3D wireless games and information applications bearing the name, likeness and image of Pele.
"Sports Illustrated recently acknowledged Pele as the most popular player ever in the world's most popular sport," said GWE president Paul Buss. "It's a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with such a world-renowned celebrity."
Pele is among several sports legends and brands being managed exclusively by GWE to extend their exposure into the wireless environment via 2D/3D cell phone games, ring tones, wallpapers and special promotions.
"Brands are just now discovering the exponential marketing opportunities available via wireless communication devices," said Buss at the E3 2005 Conference and Expo.

Realsports Soccer
Name: Realsports Soccer Company: Atari Model #: CX-2667 Programmer: Michael Sierchio Year: Released? Yes Notes: This game not endorsed by Pele. While Pele's Soccer may have broken new ground in the field of celebratory fireworks, it certainly didn't do much for video soccer. An overhead view representation of soccer with small blobs for players didn't help sell the 2600 as a sports system, in fact feeble early attempts like Pele's Soccer actually turned many sports fans to the Intellivision instead. Atari needed to get sports fans back to the 2600 and fast! Thus the RealSports line of games was created.
While most sports games used small players on a large screen to sense of perspective, RS Soccer went with large characters on a normal sized screen. To create a proper sized playfield, Atari used scrolling techniques to create the illusion of the player running down a large field (one of the first games to do so). Atari also created the "wraparound" feature where the characters wrap around from one edge of the screen to the other (unless they have control the ball of course). So if your character goes off the right side of the screen he will reappear on the left edge of the screen. This may sound a bit strange, but it works well once you get used to it and can be used to set up some interesting passing plays.
As in most early sports games, you can only control one player at a time. The computer takes control of your other two teammates, and will attempt to make the appropriate decisions to keep the ball in play. This is where RS Soccer begins to fall apart, the computer AI is fairly limited and it's easy to beat the computer using the same plays over and over again. Had the AI been beefed up a bit, it would have added alot to the game. Because of this, RS Soccer is best played with two players.

Are these the 125 greatest living soccer players? Pele seems to think so, but he might be alone...
Graham Hughes, 3/9/2004 As part of its centennial celebrations, FIFA, world soccer's governing body, decided to publish a book of photographs of the 100 greatest living players. The task of compiling the list of players was given to the man widely regarded as the greatest of them all, Pele.
In some ways, Pele was the obvious choice. Not only did he have a spectacularly successful playing career, winning three World Cups with Brazil, the first at the age of 17, he also (unlike, say, Diego Maradona) conducted himself with grace and dignity, and was a superb ambassador for the game.
However, his list was greeted mainly with a mixture of derision and, especially in his homeland, cries of outrage.
For a start, he found himself unable to whittle it down to 100 names, and instead came up with 125. Here they are:

The 64-year-old told reporters that Zinedine Zidane is the best player of the past 10 years. Figo, Raul, Beckham, Ronaldo or Kaka are very good players, but Zidane has been the more consistent. He added his compatriot Ronaldinho, who was instrumental in helping Barcelona clinch their 17th Spanish league title, was "the most brilliant player" of the moment. Pele, who dominated international soccer for two decades, was on the French Riviera to present "Pele Forever", a Brazilian documentary on his life made by Anibal Massaini Neto and shown in the festival's open-air forum "Cinema on the Beach". American Soccer didn't start with Pele: Philadelphia Soccer in the 1940s and 50s
by Len Oliver LoliverAso@aol.com This paper was originally published in the Journal of Ethno-Development by the Michigan Ethnic Heritage Studies Center in 1992 and is reproduced with the author’s permission.
Street Memories
In a recent article in USYSA NETWORK. the writer stated that “the first generation of true American players has grown up, and is beginning to take over the grassroots coaching reins For young Americans who began playing soccer in the ‘40s in urban America, these words ring hollow. People writing about soccer seem to forget the generation of young Americans exposed to the game from their immigrant fathers three decades before Pele’s debut in the North American Soccer League in the mid-’70s. This paper is written to remind us that American soccer didn’t start with Pele. My earliest soccer memories were watching my father play in the late ‘30s and kicking a ball in the streets with my twin brother, Jim. I remember above all the pungent smell of liniment in the changing rooms for my father’s teams-they had no locker rooms, just places to change-and hang around with Jim as our father prepared for a match with his German-Hungarian dub. The “Hunkies an outstanding amateur soccer team in late 30s Philadelphia, were no different than the other ethnic clubs that dotted the Philadelphia landscape in this period. They were Scow on the Bluebelles. the First Germans, the Irish playing with the Celtics, along with union-backed teams like the Bricklayers and Hosiery Local, or corporate teams such as Bethlehem Steel and Fleischer Yarn. Ethnics dominated Philadelphia soccer, although Philadelphia nurtured a sizable number of home-grown talent.
