I'm not going to mention Vie... Arsenal have apparently reserved the no23 shirt for Sol Campbell, a number popular due to it being the favourite of one Micheal Jordan. In the meantime Arsenal are making a move for free agent Pep Guardiola from Barca. Aston Villa are persisting in their attempts to sign West Ham's Freddie Kanute , I would be surprised if the Hammers let him go without a substantial fight after losing Lampard and possibly Di Canio too. Southampton have a replacement for deserter and weirdo Glenn Hoddle, temporary manager Stuart Gray has been promoted to manager, "We've chosen the best man for the job," said Rupert Lowe. Everton have apparently agreed a four year deal with Anderlecht striker Tomasz Radzinski as a replacement for noveau gunner Fran Jeffers. permanent link Thursday, June 28, 2001
There's more to football than Vieira ......Or maybe not. Arsenal are to take action against dodgy agent Marc Roger for allegedly contacting Real Madrid offering Paddy for sale - an illegal action under FIFA guidelines which could lead to the troublemaker being banned from the game for some period of time. Meanwhile Arsenal are hopeful that Wenger can convince the snooker ball headed frenchman to stay. Arsenal are reported to be after (some say have had a bid accepted) 21 year old Japanese star Junichi Inamoto , after watching him the the Confederations Cup I reckon he'd be a good signing - not even considering the vast marketing oportunities that a Japanese international in the ranks would provide.

EVEN the publicly pessimistic Arsene Wenger will surely now be forced to concede that his Arsenal side are genuine title challengers.
While all the pre-match attention had focused on the multitude of Frenchmen on display, the match-winner proved to be a Dutchman, with Dennis Bergkamp scoring his eighth goal of the season on 31 minutes.
It brought to an end Chelsea's incredible 21-match unbeaten run in the Premiership since defeat at Coventry on the opening day of the season. Not only are Arsenal's injury problems easing, with David Seaman back in goal, but in the six games since he last appeared at Aston Villa on December 13, they have picked up 16 points from six games.
Wenger has studiously attempted to play down his side's title chances over recent weeks, presenting a mirror image of his supposed realism at the same stage of last season before they cruised remorselessly towards the Double.
Arsenal may have been unable to truly impose themselves on London rivals Chelsea, but their defence is as assured as ever, coping with everything that a Chelsea side who have stuttered over recent weeks could throw at them.

(Thursday, February 26, 2004) The following e-mails are a sampling of the response to the analysis of the United States men's 1-0 loss to the Netherlands, " Dutch were clearly superior in defeat of Americans ." Readers were particularly perturbed at the performance of Frankie Hejduk on the right side of the U.S. defense. I hope a right back materializes for this team as qualification continues. Continue the great work. Christopher L. Osmond I have to ask, were we watching the same game? Clearly Bobby Convey was the class of the U.S. team, however you rate him with a middling performance. To add insult to injury, you rate him on the same level with Frankie Hejduk who failed to learn his lesson time and again as he was continually getting skinned by the Dutch youngster. I was sitting with some of my Dutch friends who were laughing at poor Frankie, commenting he should be surfing not representing our country. From a optimistic point of view, I was very happy to see some of our youth get a chance at some of Europe's best. (Cory) Gibbs did quite well and I have already mentioned how I think Convey faired. Christopher Totman One question, one opinion. The question: Why not play Tim Howard? I can't see there being any way both (Brad) Friedel and (Kasey) Keller make the final World Cup roster. Howard should be in his prime in 2006. The opinion: You were extremely generous in your game rating of Hejduk. He simply can not cut it against this level of opposition.

Barcelona started the second phase of the Champions League with a 1-3 victory at Liverpool, probably their best performance of the season to date. Rivaldo returned to the Barcelona side after playing for Brazil, which meant there was no place in the starting line up for Saviola. Puyol was suspended, and Rexach played Christanval at right back rather than Reiziger, with Luis Enrique playing further forward than normal. The Spanish international had to leave the field of play though with a recurrence of his hamstring injury with just over a quarter of an hour gone, and Overmars came on in his place. Curiously a minute later one of the linesmen did the same and the fourth referee took over on the touchline.

WING CLIPS by Gunner 27 July 2004
Farewell to Marc Overmars A couple of days ago, I heard the news that Dutch winger Marc Overmars had announced the end of his playing days. It is the end of a distinguished career that saw him win the highest of honours for Ajax Amsterdam, Arsenal and Barcelona soccer clubs, as well as a representative of the Netherlands national team from 1993 until Euro 2004. The classy winger was a major reason for rekindling my love of European football, after seeing him play for the Gunners in a European Champions League match in the 1990s. And I will never forget that beautiful goal he scored at Highbury in May 1998 when he ran the length of the pitch and made sure the Gunners would be Premiership champions. The former Arsenal winger, who has played at Barcelona since 2000, revealed that a persistent knee injury had forced him to call it a day. "My knee has caused me lots of problems and I can no longer continue to play at the level that I want," he said. Overmars, aged 31, leaves Barcelona without recompense, despite having a year remaining on his contract. Barcelona president Joan Laporta said, "We are enormously grateful for his sincerity and for the dignified act of the player."

NWANKWO Kanu, the 1996 African Footballer of the Year, has changed his name. From now on, the Arsenal striker would like to be known simply as Kanu. "It's a Brazilian thing," explained the Nigerian. He need hardly have added that he was pleased to have changed his image among English supporters, too. Kanu, 22, has not had an easy time since joining the Premiership's growing number of African stars. On his debut recently, against Sheffield United in the fifth round of the FA Cup, he famously latched onto a Ray Parlour throw-in and crossed to colleague Marc Overmars, who promptly scored the second goal in a 2-1 victory. Good start, you'd think, except that the throw-in had been aimed at the United goalkeeper - Parlour had intended to return the ball to their opponents because a Sheffield man was down injured. Kanu and Overmars had breached the unwritten rules of fair play. The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, offered to replay the match; the two clubs did, and the rest is history.

WebPosted Wed, 30 Jun 2004 18:12:16 EDT CBC Sports All eyes were on Luis Figo on Wednesday in Portugal, but they should have been on Cristiano Ronaldo. The teenaged winger showed why he is one of soccer's brightest stars, scoring one goal and setting up another to lift Portugal to a 2-1 win over the Netherlands in Wednesday's Euro 2004 semifinal. Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, right, is tackled by Dutch defender Michael Reiziger during their Euro 2004 semifinal match on Wednesday. (AP Photo/Dusan Vranic) Because of Ronaldo's goal and assist – and Figo playing a brilliant opening half – Portugal now advances to the final of a major international soccer tournament for the first time in its history. Portugal will play the winner of Thursday's semifinal between Greece and the Czech Republic in the final at Lisbon's Stadium of Light on July 4.

How can that be right? There is good reason. It is called fair play or, from a half-forgotten era, the Corinthian spirit. The English are Corinthians again, so all's fair with the world I hear you sigh. However, though the setting was one of England's oldest playing fields, the principles were mostly from other countries. Last Saturday's FA Cup match between Arsenal and Sheffield United in London was locked at 1-1 when a Sheffield player went down injured in the Arsenal penalty box. He was obviously in distress, and a Sheffield colleague kicked the ball out of play to allow him medical attention. When play resumed, Ray Parlour of Arsenal attempted to honor the convention that applies throughout the world by tossing the ball to the opponent.

    Evenly-matched field highlights world's second most-anticipated event.
(Saturday, June 10, 2000) All of Europe, and much of the soccer world, will be riveted on the European Championships. Euro 2000, the most important international tournament after the World Cup, is set to kick off today, and soccer fans from England to the Baltics are whipping themselves into a frenzy. Italian and Spanish fans are in despair over their teams' play of late. English and German fans are hopeful, no make that prayerful, that somehow their sagging national teams will be born again. Lesser countries such as Sweden and Slovenia hope this will be their breakthrough into the elite. This year's tournament marks the first time that two countries (Belgium and the Netherlands) are co-hosting the finals. One, the Netherlands, is the heavy favorite to win the title for the first time in 12 years. However, it faces the most difficult of opponents in Group D, "the group of death," and any one of probably eight teams might emerge as the eventual champion. Some of the game's most legendary stars have something in common winning the European Championships. Marco Van Basten, Ruud Gullitt, Michel Platini, Dino Zoff, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Franz Beckenbauer, Lev Yashin, and Peter Schmeichel all made their names during the quadrennial tournament. Fans have witnessed moments of inspiration such as Paul Gascgoine's stunning volley against Scotland in Euro '96, and scenes of icy composure such as Antonín Panenka's winning penalty kick against Germany in the 1976 final.
