Click here for Radio Voices Radio broadcasts were started in Guyana (then British Guiana) in the 1920s by a number of enthusiasts. In 1926, just 4 years after the British Broadcasting Company (later the British Broadcasting Corporation) started regular broadcasting in Britain, there was a small wired service that relayed broadcasts, especially from the BBC’s Daventry transmitter, over the Georgetown telephone system. From 1927, however, experimental short wave broadcasts (on 47 meters and later on 43.86 meters) were introduced for two hours a week. This lasted until 1931 when economic considerations brought the effort to an end. In 1935, broadcasts were resumed in order to receive commentaries on the current MCC cricket matches. They were so successful that two radio stations VP3BG and VP3MR were established and operated on a commercial basis until they merged in May 1938 to form the British Guiana United Broadcasting Co. Ltd. (operating station ZFY). Station ZFY operated from the main post office in Georgetown until the post office was destroyed in the fire Great Fire of Georgetown in February 1945. The radio station was then moved to North Road and New Garden Street, near to the Bourda cricket ground. The building that housed the studio was a reconditioned dwelling house west of the present Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic church. The radio station was shut down early those days - at 9.00 p.m.- with John Phillip Sousa's Washington Post March.

TheStar.com - Ontario ponders ban on pit bulls

Er, presumably because the black market pit bulls will be so much more even-tempered?
"Municipalities already have the power to prohibit certain animals within their jurisdictions.
Now, Attorney General Michael Bryant has asked his ministry's officials to look into drafting new laws that would ban all Ontario residents from owning the dogs.
Bryant says the nature of the animals — which he characterized as dangerous weapons — may require that the province step in to prevent future pit-bull attacks."
I propose instead a province-wide ban on pencil-neck politicians, particularly those breeds with a hair-trigger propensity to wield government power in half-thought-through attempts that quickly assuage waves of voter hysteria.

HOME NFL MLB NBA ... FoxCollegeSports 2005 PREVIEW: MAC Story Tools: Print Email CollegeFootballNews.com Posted: 14 days ago The "Big, Bad Wolf" of the MAC is gone. With Marshall off to Conference USA, the MAC is wide-open. Miami (OH), Bowling Green Northern Illinois and Toledo have fought for the conference title over the past few seasons. Things should be no different in 2005. All-MAC Unit Rankings Predictions Analysis
MAC East
Bowling Green (8-3, 7-1 in MAC)
Offense:
Get the abacus ready because the nation's number two offense, and number four scoring offense, should be rolling again after averaging 506 yards and 44 points per game. Quarterback Omar Jacobs leads a MAC all-star cast that might not put up quite the numbers it did last year, but it'll still be potent. P.J. Pope is back as one of the nation's best all-around backs, while Charles Sharon and Steve Sanders will put up huge numbers as Jacobs' main targets. The line will be dominant on the left side with tackle Rob Warren and guard Kory Lichtensteiger, but there are three new starters coming in and questionable depth.
Defense: The Falcon defense wasn't a rock last year. It didn't have to be. Expect more of the same with a decent run defense and a shaky pass defense despite the return of starting corners Jelani Jordan and Terrill Mayberry. There has to be a more steady pass rush with end Devon Parks needing to become more of a playmaker. The linebacking corps will need some work around weakside star Teddy Piepkow.

Steve Bilsky has played important athletic roles at the University of Pennsylvania, both on and off the court. As a basketball player, he was a three-time All-Ivy League guard and captain of the school's best team in its history in 1970-71. In his current position as Penn's Athletic Director, Bilsky has expanded activities, competition and facilities for the school's numerous men's and women's teams and its recreation programs. A native of Roslyn, NY, Bilsky played on the 1970-71 nationally-ranked Quaker basketball team (28-1), considered one of the all-time greatest teams in Penn history. He led the 1969-70 team in free throw percentage, hitting 81 percent of his shots and is still the Penn record holder for free throws made in a game with 17 against Columbia. He guided Penn to a No. 3 ranking after taking his team to the East Regional Finals in the NCAA Tournament and claiming its second straight Ivy League and Big Five championships along the way. In his final two seasons as Penn's point guard, his teams collected a 53-3 record and he was the runner-up for the Naismith Award in 1971.

By Shawnel Cudjoe
SOCIAL workers attached to the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, yesterday participated in a one-day training seminar to sharpen their skills as they prepare to counsel victims of the recent floods.
Chief Probation and Welfare Officer, Mrs Ann Greene, told the Chronicle that although the flood waters have receded in the affected communities, fear, stress and guilt remain with the victims.
She said the 42 social workers trained yesterday are expected to set up centres in flood-hit communities and counsel victims as early as next week.
The goal of the seminar, which was held under the theme 'Helping survivors in the wake of disaster' at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre in Kingston, Georgetown, was to make available enlightened training for social workers of the ministry.
This is to enable them to provide more effective and efficient interventions in crisis situations, Greene explained.

by Mark Ramotar
CABINET yesterday approved a contract for $16.1M for the supply and installation of a close circuit television surveillance system at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
According to Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, the hi-tech system is being installed as part of a committed effort by Cabinet to enhance airport security and ensure the enforcement of law and order at the Timehri facility.
About 40 close circuit television surveillance cameras will be placed strategically all over the airport.
Dr. Luncheon said this system will provide the airport with the most comprehensive surveillance system in its first introduction.
Luncheon said this covers both the land site and the air site and also the entirety of the CJIA operations both at the arrival and departure areas, through customs and through immigrations, through handling, the executive lounge and the VIP suites.
"...it is the first phase because it moves seamlessly into the second phase, which is a similar such deployment at our seaports (whereby) customs presence at all of the wharves will be treated similarly," Luncheon stated.
