The Ghost Of Christmas Future It's Christmas 2002 ; United (managed by David O'Leary) are struggling to pick up points at home to the teams they're battling with against relegation. England have nearly Manchester United's season only a few weeks ago. I stand by my comments, a team that defends as badly as United will not win the league, but the important point is that anything can and will happen. Liverpool , who've looked unstoppable most of the season, are dropping points and playing poorly. Leeds have been battling away but the quality of their performances switch between sublime and clueless in an instant. It seemed after their defeat at home to Newcastle that it was the same old story for Arsenal Newcastle have suffered a touch of vertigo and slipped up, but they are now considered contenders more seriously than when they reached the summit. For me the title race is as open as I've ever seen it, I do think that simply looking at the sides will clarify the real competition though. The most serious challengers are Arsenal and Liverpool ; both have winning squads and in Thierry Henry and Michael Owen they have the two most potent attacking forces in the country. With truly world class players in midfield and defence to compliment the forwards they are the two best footballing teams in the country and only nuances will separate them.

For all of Warner Brothers’ dollars, the Cosmos were a pretty mediocre club. As a result, the rest of the league had not yet taken to spending outrageous sums of money on fading stars in an attempt to imitate New York. Which is not to say that NASL owners were above copying successful formulas-in the wake of Toronto’s improbable 1976 championship, about a dozen new Yugoslavs dotted league rosters, including Vito Dimitrijevic and Yadranko Topic (New York) and Canadian National League sensation Milovan Bakic (Rochester). Under the circumstances, Banks came pretty cheaply. Another bargain goalkeeper was Bill Glazier, who signed with St. Louis. Glazier was slated to be Banks’ backup in the 1966 World Cup until a broken leg had sidelined him. By the time the Stars signed him, he had been out of professional football for a year. Unlike Banks, however, Glazier would not have a very impressive comeback, not even making the club. Other stars also moved around the league. Bob Rigby and Steve David were acquired by Los Angeles, and Vancouver snapped up 1976 North American Player of the Year Arnie Mausser to replace Phil Parkes, who suffered a hand injury during his English League season and would not be available to the ‘Caps. Also, Portland acquired top scorers Clyde Best and Stewart Scullion from Tampa Bay.

    First Friday - September 2003
Greetings from the CCC campus as our 120th academic year is underway! This may be the first issue of FIRST FRIDAY that you've received. We added a number of new email addresses over the summer gathered from the Harris Alumni Directory process, General Conference in Seattle, and from parents of new students this past weekend. I hope you find it worthwhile and enjoyable. If you don't and would like to be eliminated (your email address that is), hit "reply" and tell me so.
I wanted to give a quick report on our first-ever Preview Day for high school juniors. It was definitely a success! We had 11 students visit the campus on Tuesday, May 13. We look forward to hosting more of these Junior Preview Days with the next one scheduled for Friday, October 3.
During the summer, two CCC students brought home awards from the national Phi Beta Lambda (business club) competition. Marcin Wojtczak placed 9th in the nation in International Business and Susan Olsen placed 10th in the nation in Marketing. Congratulations to these business students and to their professors at Central!
Work Week 2003. More than 70 volunteers participated during this year's Work Week in June, ranging in age from 8 to 76. They contributed an estimated 1,115 hours, saving the College approximately $12,600. Of the 30 jobs which had been identified, 27 were completed.

      Managers go back to School
Wednesday, 18 June 2003. 'You can never stop learning', is the message that players often hear from their coaches, and this summer, forty of the brightest managers and coaches in English football are taking their own advice, and going back to school........ Yesterday at Warwick University under the tutelage of Acting FA Technical Director Les Reed, the third UEFA Pro Licence course kicked off, with the purpose of improving the coaching and managing of elite teams of players in English football.
The 2002 Pro Licence course included England national coaches David Platt, Stuart Baxter, Hope Powell and John McDermott, and they will all graduate from the course on Wednesday 25th June.
The class of 2003 includes Wales Manager Mark Hughes, England national coaches Paul Bracewell and John Peacock, John Carver of Newcastle United and former Everton and Republic of Ireland winger Kevin Sheedy, now at Hartlepool United.
The FA Coaching Diploma also at Warwick University will include Peter Reid, Steve McClaren, Gary McAllister, David O'Leary and Steve Bruce.

      O'Leary: Never too old
Monday, 30 June 2003. Exclusive: New Aston Villa manager David O'Leary was delighted to receive his FA Coaching Diploma certificate from a familiar face last week, his former Arsenal manager Don Howe. Afterwards he spoke to TheFA.com
TheFA.com: Having recently been appointed by Aston Villa, was it particularly nice for you to attend an FA coaching diploma as a manager rather than a former manager.
David O'Leary: I don't think it matters one way or the other to be honest because in this business people are always in and out of jobs. When people are together in a group, nobody looks and says "you're in, you're out."
TheFA.com: One of the talks was done by Don Howe, who used to be your coach and then manager at Arsenal back in the mid-1980s. How was it catching up with him again?
DO: It was amazing to get my graduation certificate off Don, it shows what a small world it is. Don made a great impression on me as a coach and gave me the idea that I would like to go into management. He was a great influence on me, I worked with him for about eight years and he was always very organised and knew what he wanted out of people.

      The rainbow nation?
Identity and nation building in post-apartheid South-Africa Gary Baines
Rhodes University Introduction: representing the rainbow nation S Archbishop Desmond Tutu is usually credited with coining the phrase 'the rainbow nation'. The secondary metaphor of the rainbow with its spectrum of colours suggests that South Africa is a multicultural society. This image may have more obviously political derivations. Unlike the primary metaphor, the room for different cultural interpretations of the colour spectrum is slight. For whether the rainbow has Newton's seven colours or the five of the Nguni (i.e. Xhosa and Zulu) cosmology, the colours are not taken literally to represent particular cultural groups. Indeed, the rainbow nation rhetoric avoids direct reference to colour in the sense of race. Instead, the rainbow's colours are simply said to symbolise the diversity of South Africa's usually unspecified cultural/ethnic/racial groups. Is the image of the 'rainbow nation' an apposite one for the 'new' South Africa? Whose vision is it and to what extent has it informed the imagined community of the nation (Anderson 1991: 15)? And how does national identity intersect with the individual identities of those doing the imagining? These are some of the concerns of this paper.
