Tuesday, April 23, 2002 McAllister tipped COVENTRY Veteran Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister was reported yesterday to be on the verge of becoming manager of first division soccer club Coventry City. McAllister, 37, played with Coventry, then in the premier league, for three years before joining Liverpool on a free transfer in 2000. The manager's job has been vacant since Sweden's Roland Nilsson was sacked last week. Reports said the Coventry board would name McAllister, a former Leeds player and Scottish international, as manager this week. REFEREE: Pierluigi Pairetto (Italy). AUDIENCE: 76.684, Wembley, London. YELLOW CARDS: Ince, Shearer (England); Collins, Spencer, Hendry (Scotland). RED CARDS: NONE. The names might be misspelled. The responsibility for that is mine only. No sooner had the crowd stopped applausing David Seaman for the first penalty stopped in EC'96 than we've also seen the best goal of this tournament. Paul Gascoigne got a ball from Darren Anderton, raised the ball over Hendry with his left, cut to the right and shot from the air with his right, beating Andy Goram. 2:0, in a game disappointing me with the result, but by no means with the quality of play. This tournament has by now three important features - bad refereeing, a low number of goals and most of all, excellent keepers. Mihailov, Pascolo, Rustu, Schmeichel, Lama, Kouba, Ladic, Zubizarreta, Peruzzi, van der Sar... The two we saw yesterday were no exception. Andy Goram proved once more his superb skill, but above all, it was David Seaman, "The Man Of The Game".

Every four years Australia's hopes are raised at the prospect of breaking what is now a 27-year drought in qualifying for the Soccer World Cup. But every four years it is the same old story, heartbreak as the Socceroos fail to pass the final hurdle. Soccer fans should be use to it by now, Australia having not qualified for the World Cup since 1974. But somehow every disappointment hurts just as much as the last. As Australian soccer fans are forced to watch a seventh World Cup without the Socceroos, they will remember the misery that was Montevideo. After a tight 1-0 win at the MCG in the first of their two qualifiers against Uruguay, Australia left for Montevideo knowing one away goal would probably be enough to ensure a World Cup berth. As it turned out, the Socceroos were not only unable to score one goal but were beaten across the park

    Football Champions
Setting: Football Champions is the first CCG to represent one of the biggest sports in the world: Football. No, not the one played in the United States. The one Americans refer to as Soccer, but everyone else on the planet calls Football. You know, I think if all of the countries could agree on just three things, we'd find world peace and harmony: one currency, one measurement system, and one game named football.
Game Play: First off, thanks to Carlo Brozzo for getting a copy of this game for me. See, because 'soccer' isn't as big in the U.S. as it is in, well, most other countries, WotC has decided not to release FC in the United States. Brilliant, huh? Isolate a game from the largest CCG market in the world.
Anyway, in FC you build a team of players to be your team. Each player has a point value, which represents the skills they have in various stats:Pace, Tackle, Shot, Skill, Header, Save and Penalty. In the basic form of the game, you don't use all of these, but it takes all of them to simulate the game.
One of the few problems I have with this game is that it pretty much requires a playmat. The mat is a giant field, and you will position your players on it. It works out just fine, but it's still kind of annoying. Each player has a team of cards, plus a deck of strategy cards, dice and a ball token. Basically, the field mat is split into a big grid, and at the start of the game, each player has a player card in each square of the grid.

McAllister Leeds From the Front FA Cup 5th Round Replay Port Vale 1 Leeds 2 Gary McAllister lead Leeds into the quarter finals of the FA Cup to continue their successful cup runs in both domestic competitions. Leeds have been 23 years without a Wembley appearance, may now be on their way twice in the same season, having already secured a place in the Coca Cola Cup final against Aston Villa. McAllister struck twice to bring Leeds back from behind against a spritely Port Vale team, who belied their uncomfortable league position at the bottom of the 1st Division. Leeds are to play the winner of tonight's 5th round clash betwwen Liverpool and Charlton. Port Vale went ahead in the 37th minute, having put Leeds under constant pressure and looking the neater of the two teams. John McCarthy found Tony Naylor stretching into the box and just managed to get a foot in to direct the ball through Lukic's legs. The pressure might have brought Port Vale more reward, but several good chances were wasted. At half time Malinga was replaced by Thomas Brolin, Leeds' record signing, who preceeded to inspire the Yorkshire team forward. Brolin escaped the close attention of Port Vale's defence and managed to release a perfect cross for Gary McAllister to score a rare header from.

Despite the injury crisis in 2001-02, Jamie still only made it as far as the bench, and although he was only 19, he really needed to start turning his promise into first team appearances or face the prospect of continuing his career elsewhere. In 2002/03 he made a couple of creditable sub appearances notably against Blackburn and was packed off to Cov for a not totally impressive loan spell with Gary McAllister's men.

Tottenham Hotspur released Mabizela recently because he failed to arrive on time for numerous training sessions and because the training staff questioned his work ethic.

"When they go in, they go in, don't they?" Was all Raul Gonzales could say. Gerd Muller, who 20 years ago was the most instinctive soccer striker of all, wracked his brain for some words to describe the habit of arriving in the right place at the exact moment of opportunity. "Something inside my head said 'Gerd, go this way, Gerd go that', and I go." Raul is 21, as slender as a reed, quick of mind and eye and movement, but his nature is mercurial. From adolescence, people were prophesying that was the chosen one. Sometimes he looks the part, sometimes he frustrates. Now, of course, they are shouting that the Madrid forward will, like the little white bull, be the best in Spain. Ask an Austrian, ask the half a dozen bemused waiters who double as San Marino defenders, and they might agree. But ask Javier Clemente, forced to quit as Spain's national coach because the team collectively, and Raul individually, did not deliver on a consistent basis, and he will reply that even when the talent is there, the sense of purpose sometimes betrays it.

    Gary McAllister
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Gary McAllister (born December 25 in Motherwell ) is a former Scottish professional footballer and manager . He began his playing career at Motherwell F.C. , scoring 8 goals in 70 appearances, until his fine performance in the 1985 Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic F.C. caught the eye of Leicester City F.C manager Gordon Milne. He signed for the English club, along with Motherwell team-mate Ally Mauchlen, for a combined fee of £250,000 in McAllister went on to play for Leeds United F.C. Coventry City F.C. and Liverpool F.C. He was also a Scotland international and is a member of the Scotland Football Hall of Fame , having won over 50 caps. Though serving for a relatively short time at Anfield, he played an integral role in the team that won a treble of cups in . His ability to play central midfield or on either wing made him a useful weapon the the armoury of then manager, Gerard Houllier . Gary was also known for his unmatched ability with the dead-ball and proved it time and again as he presided over most of Liverpool's set pieces that season. He also made a strong impression on the younger members of ths squad, and seemed to have an almost heroic effect on players around him when they found themselves in a corner. McAllister also had a spell in management with former club Coventry City F.C.
