For all St. Johnstone supporters, season 1999/2000 spelled the end of an era. More significantly, it also spelled the end of an era for fans' favourite Allan "Biscuits" Preston who, aged 30, ended a memorable 6 year association with the club when he was forced to hang up his boots due to injury.

Blackburn sign up Carsley in bid to avoid relegation
BLACKBURN yesterday added the battling qualities of midfielder Lee Carsley to their fight against relegation.
The 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international put pen to paper on a four-year deal after moving from Derby for £3.375m.
Brian Kidd's fifth big-money signing since he became Rovers manager in December takes his spending to £18m. Ashley Ward, Matt Jansen, Jason McAteer and Keith Gillespie have also arrived at the Lancashire club as they bid to avoid the drop.
Rovers boss Kidd said: "I am not just happy with Lee's ability but also his character — he is terrific to have around the place.
Lee has a number of attributes and there are various roles he can play. But I don't want to pigeon-hole him because I believe there is a lot more to his game.
"He is at a great age, he has a tremendous engine, a great passing range and he is a real box-to-box player — a really good buy.
"We've identified our targets early on and none have been a rush job or a panic buy.

City in pink, but Harps boss sees red over ref
by Noel Spillane
FINN HARPS manager Charlie McGeever was livid after their defeat by Cork City at Turners Cross, but he did his best to hide his frustration at referee Dick O'Hanlon's performance.
The Waterford official sent Harps' left-winger Eamon Cavanagh off after 23 minutes for an off-the-ball elbow on Greg O'Halloran.
"I am going to launch my own little inquiry into the number of players we have had sent off when Mr O'Hanlon has been in charge of our games," said McKeever. "Our ratio of red cards has been high when he's been handling our matches and it's a statistic that I want to check out myself. I'd prefer not to make any other comments until I have checked the facts.
"But, off the top of my head, over the last two years, I think we have had four or five players dismissed by him and it's beginning to become a problem for us," added the Donegal schoolteacher who is one of the longest-serving managers in the League of Ireland.
"Overall I was happy enough with our performance but we knew coming down here that Cork would be a hard team to beat and that's the way it turned out. The sending off did not help though after just 20 minutes or so and we were already a goal behind at that stage," he added.

Keane Takes Snipe At Diver Cole

In an interview with Manchester United's official magazine captain Roy Keane has
taken a snipe at Arsenal defender Ashley Cole after his theatrical dive in the box
during the clash at Highbury earlier this month :
"I wasn't quite sure what he was up to. If I had known, I might have reacted

anti-bullying but it would be a good idea to start wearing wristbands for anti-diving.
It's not just about foreign players because Ashley Cole is English but it's something
that has crept into The Premiership. Players are going down far too easily and it
seems to be getting worse." Benitez Loses Patience Rafa Benitez has, for the first time, publicly criticised the performance of his team following their dismal display against Birmingham : "I have come here to work hard and I expect everyone else to do the same. We

PREMIERSHIP ROUND 36 1 MAY 2001 30 APRIL 2001 Charlton (1) 2 (Svensson 12, Rufus 57) Ipswich (1) 1 (Reuser 20) Ipswich Town's Champions League aspirations took a severe dent tonight as they slipped up 2-1 at The Valley against Charlton, although a draw would perhaps have been a more accurate scoreline. Charlton took the lead early on when John Robinson's right wing cross was met brilliantly at the near post by Mathias Svensson whose near post header crashed into the back of the net. The equaliser followed eight minutes later when Martijn Reuser's clipped ball into the area somehow deceived everyone and bobbled apologetically into the bottom corner with Ilic grasping at thin air. The lead was regained in the second half when Ipswich failed to clear a free kick and as it fell to Graham Stuart at the far post, his half hit shot was helped past Richard Wright by Richard Rufus who was standing directly in front of the Ipswich keeper. Both clubs had further chances but there was no further addition to the scoreline. 28 APRIL 2001 Gary Dowden Chief Editor - Soccerage (UK) http://www.soccerage.com

(Monday, March 20) The last week may have signified United States striker Landon Donovan's breakthrough on his way to becoming a true professional. Tuesday, Donovan had his best showing as a professional. Playing a midfield role, he set up both goals in Leverkusen's 2-0 win away against Siegen, receiving "Player of the Match" honors. Then on Friday, playing as an attacking midfielder, he scored a first-half hat trick, helping Leverkusen demolish Rot-Weiss Essen 5-2. His performance was described as "outstanding," and he was again chosen "Player of the Match." Donovan is starting to get noticed by the German media and it is assumed that at the rate he is progressing. he will earn promotion to the full squad, probably next year, but possibly even late this season. More importantly, he is starting to be talked about as a possible heir to Bayer's star Ulf Kirsten, who at 34 is starting to look at retirement. In England, it was a bad week Everton, and for U.S. striker

Football excellence is just a distant Scottish memory.
(Saturday, February 22, 2003) Oh Flower of Scotland when will we see Your like again. . . These are bleak days for Scottish soccer. Not so long ago, Scotland was giving Brazil a run for its money in the opening game of the 1998 World Cup in Paris and was unlucky to lose 2-1. Now the Scottish national team can't get past the part-timers of the Faroe Islands. It will be a miracle if the Scots, guided by German coach Bertie Vogts, qualify for Euro 2004 in Portugal. Vogts' job security must be razor-thin. In 12 games under the former German national-team coach, who led the Euro '96 championship run, the Scots have only beaten Iceland and Canada. The Mad Brit has a fondness for Scotland. He spent a year exiled in the windy coastal town of Dunbar and took a liking to haggis (heart, lungs and liver of a sheep or calf mixed with oatmeal and boiled in a pigs stomach). There are three pictures on The Mad Brit's bathroom wall (I know it's strange, but the wife won't allow soccer pictures on the bedroom wall). One is of Pele trading shirts with Bobby Moore at the 1970 World Cup; another is of Bobby Charlton unleashing a rocket. The third shows Scottish ace Dennis Law tearing up a defense in a Manchester United jersey. If only Scotland had a player like Dennis Law today.
