November 30, 1998

Down Memory Lane Autumn is not to all tastes, given what follows it, but the afternoon of my last visit to Varsity Stadium was by anybody's standards a perfect fall day. A bright, if parsimonious, sun shone in a crisp blue sky and brittle golden leaves crackled beneath my feet. One of the recent newspaper accounts of the closing of Varsity Stadium made mention of a tightrope walker who allegedly fell to his death on that hallowed turf in the 1960s. Well I was there that night too and I can tell you that the Grim Reaper was elsewhere. The tightrope walker didn't leave the building under his own steam, to be sure, but for all I know he lives to this day - and I'll bet he always knows when it's going to rain. I thought of the tightrope walker as I entered the stadium, but I guess I always do. He is one of my Varsity Stadium memories. I saw my first soccer riot there, supporters of Toronto Italia tearing up chunks of Devonshire Place in a vain attempt to breach the walls and tear the referee asunder. I saw the Varsity Blues of the Bryce Taylor/Mike Eben/Gerry Sternberg era, back in the days when university students watched football games. I saw Bruce Kidd and other Canadian Olympians circle that old cinder track. It's still an old cinder track, which should in itself justify preservation on historical grounds. I was once part of a capacity crowd at Varsity for an Olympic soccer match between East Germany and Brazil. We could easily have squeezed in another 20,000 fans the day of my last visit. The field that had supported Sir Stanley Matthews and Pele in its day now showcased the best of the Varsity Blues and the Queen's Golden Gaels. Ontario University Athletics men's soccer, eastern semi-final: winner advances, backs to the wall, everything to play for. Yet even with no admission charge it was not a big draw. We were not exactly in each other's laps, except by mutual consent. You know what young people are like.

Livermore Youth Soccer League Soccer Rules are Brilliant by Stanley Lover (reprinted from FIFA Magazine) The Laws of the Game are incredibly brilliant. They must be because they provide us with a fun sport which millions of people enjoy. They are also incredibly dull, in their presentation, enough to switch off anyone searching for quick comprehension. Dull? Yes, but only if they are read as written. A brief glance at the rulebook shows just seventeen rules to govern the play but which, amazingly, do not include a single reference to the "Game of Soccer"!: Stanley Lover is an Englishman living in Paris who specializes in the Laws of the Game and has written several books on the Laws and refereeing.

If it ever existed it was when this man played. Stan was himself aware the football world had changed and he had pretty determined views that in many ways it was not for the better. The outrageous wages, the poor sportsmanship, attacks on referees and tackling 'which is little short of common assault' were all things he felt were not part of the football he once graced. And you have to accept that in a career which spanned from 17 years to 50 years in which he was never cautioned once by a referee he might have a point. This was despite some of the tighest marking of any player ever in the game of football (but that is not to say the leg breaking tackles the modern game specialises in).

SIR STANLEY MATTHEWS: A SHORT PROFILE by Gerry Wolstenholme
His father was also known as ‘the fighting barber’ for he had been the Potteries featherweight boxing champion and had, remarkably, only lost nine out of 350 fights. His sporting instincts did not stop with boxing for he, fortuitously for young Stanley, ran a junior football team.
The young Matthews family, Stan and his three brothers, were brought up kicking a ball, or rather a makeshift ball, on the field near their Seymour Street home. It was an old tin can or a bundle of rags tied together with string that was often the object of their attention and it was a special treat when they managed to play with a rubber ball!
Of these enjoyable times Stan has said, “ I was playing all the time. My mother could not understand what I was doing but a ball fascinated me.
Jack Matthews could see that his son had talent and he took on the role of Stan’s trainer, instilling in him the fitness regimes, including deep breathing exercises before an open window at dawn, that Stan continued in later life. At the time Stan was always enthusiastic as he later commented “ There were times when I wanted to rebel, but it became a good habit

'Tapping up' laws are outdated vestiges of soccer serfdom. by Duleep Allirajah
Was Ashley Cole more tapped up against than tapping? Not having been privy to the much-discussed meeting in the London hotel in question, I'm in no position to say. However, while Chelsea's apparently insatiable desire to 'tap up' anything that moves is upsetting a lot of people in the game, I just can't see what all the fuss is about.
Cole's decision to challenge the legality of the Football Association's rules against 'tapping up' has led to dire warnings of the end of football as we know it. 'Do we want a society and a system where people respect rules or one where it is okay to drive through red lights?', asked Arsenal chairman David Dein. 'Ashley Cole is ready to lead football towards anarchy after insisting he will fight to scrap Premier League tapping-up rules', wrote David Kidd in the Sun (1). The rules are there for a purpose, so runs the argument, and without them there would be chaos. But is that really the case?
In football there are some rules that are inviolable, as far as I'm concerned. If a player handles the ball it's a foul. If an attacking player is fouled in the penalty area, a spot kick is awarded. At the final whistle the team that has scored the most goals wins the game. But there are other rules that are not part of soccer's doctrinal canon. Before the recent furore over Chelsea's

You Gotta Know These Footballers (Soccer Players)
  • Franz Beckenbauer Mia Hamm Sir Stanley Matthews (1915-2000) (England-Winger) Known as "Wizard of the Dribble," the winger debuted for England as a 19 year-old, and closed his international career in 1956 at the age of 41, when he was named the first-ever European Footballer of the Year. Though he played for unfashionable northern first division clubs like Blackpool and Stoke City, he was the most popular player of his era. In the 1953 F.A. Cup final against Bolton at Wembley, thereafter always called "The Matthews Final," Matthews lead a rousing comeback from a 3-1 deficit with 30 minutes remaining, setting up three goals. He is also one of the most gentlemanly players in history, having never been sent off with a red card during his entire career. In 1961, he became the first English footballer to be knighted. In 1963, at the age of 48, he helped Stoke City back into the FA First Division by scoring the goal that clinched promotion. He retired, quite reluctantly, from the game in 1965 at the age of 50. Diego Maradona (1960-) (Argentina-Forward) The oft-controversial strike helped Argentina to the 1986 World Cup Championship with two amazing goals against England in the semi-finals, including the infamous "Hand of God" goal, in which Maradona directed the ball into the net with his hand illegally, undetected by officials on the pitch. A two-time South American Player of the Year (1978 and 1979) before joining FC Barcelona in 1982 after the World Cup in Spain, in 1984, he moved on to FC Napoli, where he would help his side claim two Serie A Championships and a UEFA Cup win in 1989. He was banned for failing a drug test in 1991 and by the time he returned, he was no longer his old playing self, though he did lead a stirring performance for Argentina at the 1994 World Cup in the U.S., before being banned again for failing another drug test during the tournament. Maradona finally retired in 1997 from his original team, Argentina's Boca Juniors.
