Mathis returns with a flourish
Soccer star leaves Germany for MLS
Mathis joins new MLS club. By RONALD BLUM, The Associated Press Alternately defiant and apologetic, Clint Mathis returned to Major League Soccer on Thursday with expansion Real Salt Lake following a year in Germany that began with promise and ended in frustration. Mathis, a key player on the U.S. national team, left the MetroStars after the 2003 season and signed with Hannover 96 last Jan. 20. He scored four goals in his first five games, but didn't get another goal until Sept. 25, when he came on in the final 10 minutes against Schalke 04 and scored 90 seconds later. After that goal, he ran toward his own bench, grabbed his crotch, gave coach Ewald Lienen an angry look and pointedly tapped his wrist as if wearing a watch his way of saying he should have been put in earlier. "I had a lot of adrenaline going," Mathis said during a telephone conference call. "The only people I apologized to was my teammates for not running up to them after the goal was scored. I did the watch thing and what-not, but I don't regret what I did. That might not have been the right thing, but I didn't do anything wrong in that regards. He wouldn't listen to me any other way, so I sent a message that way."

In early September of 2001, the Bigsoccer ignoscenti were calling for US National Team coach Bruce Arena's head after a slump in qualifying. Sadly, the original thread was lost in one of two Major Crashes on Bigsoccer since then, but a large part of it was saved and rescued. It's even funnier with the benefit of hindsight. Enjoy. Mathis, 2 other Americans sign with European soccer leagues
By Wes Wolfe Published: Friday, January 23, 2004 Former USC soccer star Clint Mathis signed with German club Hannover 96 of the German Bundesliga on Wednesday, ending speculation about where he would end up playing. Mathis had tried out for several English teams and Hannover after leaving Major League Soccer team the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.
Mathis' contract runs through June 2006, with an option for another year. Mathis will be replacing the team's star striker, Jan Simak of the Czech Republic. Simak left Hannover several months ago, claiming that he was depressed, and has not returned.
Mathis will not be the only American player on the team, though. He will join Steven Cherundolo, a native of Illinois who attended the University of Portland. Cherundolo has been playing for Hannover since November 2002.

Mathis' contract with MLS team the New York/New Jersey MetroStars expired at the end of 2003 and was not renewed.

Club: MetroStars (USA) Hailed from age five as a goal-producing prodigy, Clint Mathis saw Argentina legend Diego Maradona at the 1986 World Cup and got one of the star's jerseys.
That's when he knew he wanted a football career. His break came when he joined the MetroStars of Major League Soccer in 2000.
He suffered torn knee ligaments in 2001, but so impressed US coach Bruce Arena during World Cup qualifying that he was promised a spot on the final team.
At least now Mathis will get to Asia. Mathis thought he was going with the US squad to the World Under-17 Championships in Japan but was a last-minute cut from the team. Mathis still has that jersey buried in a dresser at his home.
Mathis is among 11 Cup finals debutants on the US roster. He had a recent run of at least a goal or assist in seven consecutive starts and has eight goals and six assists in 19 caps. His finishing will be vital to US hopes.

ARENA NAMES 23-MAN ROSTER FOR NOV. 17 MATCH AGAINST EL SALVADOR AT RFK STADIUM ON ESPN Youth Is the Theme for Final Match in 2002 as Road to Germany 2006 Begins
From the U.S. Soccer Communications Center October 29, 2002
CHICAGO (October 29, 2002) -U.S. Men's National Team head coach Bruce Arena has chosen a 23-man roster that will train in preparation for the international friendly against El Salvador on Sunday, November 17 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN beginning at 3 p.m. ET, and fans can also follow the action live online via ussoccer.com's MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics. The United States has not faced an international opponent since the team's historic quarterfinal finish at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in June. The team will train in the Washington, D.C. area beginning Nov. 10. Youth is the theme in the U.S. training camp, with the average player age coming in just under 24 years old. During the 2002 World Cup, the team's average age was 28. Eleven players will be in search of their first international cap against El Salvador, including high-scoring Revolution forward Taylor Twellman, who lit up MLS with 23 goals this year. During the previous four-year cycle under Bruce Arena, 93 different players were given an opportunity to play with the national team, and the trend resumes again as 2006 World Cup qualifying begins in about 18 months.
