Goal Digger
Party animal Clint Mathis is just what the U.S. needs to take on the world: a gifted scorer unafraid to impose his will on the game
Issue date: May 27, 2002 By Michael Bamberger
May 27, 2002 Brad Mangin For Clint Mathis, the next party is never far away. His favorite spot in his West Paterson, N.J., town house is the basement, where he has Bud and Bud Light on tap. Since May 2000, when he was acquired by to the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, he has become a habitue of Manhattan's clubs. On those rare occasions when he answers his cellphone, it's usually to address his social life. Cruising along the Garden State Parkway recently in his black BMW SUV, Mathis muted the rap pulsing from the radio and answered a teammate's call with a question. "Wachoo got goin' on tonight?" he said, a slight Southern twang in his voice. Mathis was returning from an appearance at a suburban soccer league clinic, where he had listened intently as schoolgirls posed questions about soccer heartthrobs. Dribbling an undersized ball over a bumpy field and wearing a baseball cap backward, the 5'10", 170-pound Mathis could have passed for a high school junior an innocent one. He looked like sweetness itself. When he scored a goal in a one-on-10 scrum, a soccer mom peering through a telephoto lens called out, "Take off your shirt!" His response was an aw-shucks grin, a staple of his make-everybody-happy boyhood in Conyers, Ga. Now, weaving through the twilight traffic, defying the speed limit to get on to his evening, Mathis looked closer to his actual age. (He's 25 and single.) He blew by a Taurus and into wide-open space. Had he been on a soccer pitch, you would have said his chances of scoring were excellent. "You're changing your plans," Mathis told his caller. "I got something good for you tonight. Remember that girl, the singer? We're gonna meet up with her and two of her friends for dinner at that Japanese place in the city at nine. Be at my place by eight."

Sunday's 2-0 win against El Salvador marked an end and a beginning for the United States national team. The match gave the U.S. its best-ever year with a record of 12-6-2, capping a campaign highlighted by the nation's best World Cup performance in 72 years. It was also the first match since a 1-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup quarterfinals, and coach Bruce Arena brought in a young and MLS-based squad as he began the process of building a squad to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The match was similarly significant for U.S. forward Clint Mathis, who in the course of one calendar year had already managed to score two goals in his first national team game after knee surgery, face Arena's public criticism of his work ethic, appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated , score a brilliant goal at the World Cup, undergo yet another knee surgery upon returning to MLS and, finally, have his club coach publicly suggest he seek psychological help.

On the pitch As top young Americans are wooed by European leagues, MLS, which eliminated two teams be fore this season and could use the cash, may have to make some hard decisions between selling its best young players overseas for millions of dollars and keeping them home to help develop the league. It's likely that American fans may only see their homegrown talent at the beginning or end of their careers if young U.S. players sign contracts overseas, where the competition and money is greater.

    365 Interview
by Doug McIntyre Soccer365: You were coming off hernia surgery at the beginning of the season but now your scoring touch has returned and you seem to be nearing top form just in time for the Confederations Cup. How are you feeling? Before the World Cup last year, several European clubs, including Bayern Munich, were interested in signing you. With your MLS contract up in December, is it important for you to perform well in France knowing potential suitors will be watching closely? Has MLS approached you about resigning with the league, with your current deal set to expire? I think a lot of guys (in MLS) can. Soccer has definitely gotten better here. I think the World Cup was a key for a lot of people. After our success there many people realized that some of the American guys can play and play well and produce (in Europe). Of the big four leagues in Europe - England, Germany, Italy and Spain - which one would you prefer to play in if you had your pick?

365: First off, what are your emotions about being back in the MLS?
CM: No. I just think that the things that happened with the Bayern Munich deal not going through and all that, I think I was a little disappointed with those situations. I think it was just time for me to move on and see if I could play overseas and in Europe. I enjoyed that year in Germany. Once I made the decision to come back it was solely in order to play with John Ellinger. 365: So you just feel extremely comfortable with him apparently.
CM: Well, no. I mean I was going to leave, probably try to get out of Hannover anyway because there was no way I was going to play with that coach. There were probably four or five other Bundeslige teams that were after me, a team in Spain, and you know, some other teams like in Holland and what not. But, like I said, I made this promise a while back to try to play with John and I stuck to my word.
365: There are two of your teammates I want to ask about. First of all Jason Kreis, you two will be up front there.

Clint Mathis, Josh Wolff and Brian Ching want a more positive 2002 soccer season after being set back by injuries last summer. Mathis and Wolff were off to excellent starts with the United States National Men's Team, helping the Americans to a 3-0 start in World Cup qualifying matches when they were put out of action. Mathis, a midfielder/striker, suffered an ACL tear in his right knee during practice when the U.S. men were preparing for an international friendly with Ecuador. At the time, he had established himself as a starter with Major League Soccer's New York-New Jersey MetroStars Wolff, a striker, fractured two bones in his left foot in the third MLS match of the season while playing for the Chicago Fire. Initially, the fractures didn't show up on X-rays and he expected to be out two-to-four weeks, but his down time turned into four months. Ching suffered a fractured jaw just when he was beginning to feel comfortable with the Los Angeles Galaxy and missed several weeks of his first MLS season.

During the summer of 2002, two of Berson's former players, Clint Mathis and Josh Wolff, represented the United States in the 2002 World Cup. Mathis also graced the cover of Sports Illustrated in May, marking the third Gamecock athlete, in any sport, to be featured on the prestigious magazine. During the summer of 2004, Mathis played for Hannover 96 of the German Bundeliga and Wolff starred for the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer (MLS), while goalkeeper Henry Ring (Chicago Fire) had a breakout season representing the garnet and black in the MLS. Ring was named to the MLS All-Star game and started in goal for the East. Coach Berson has made his mark on the college soccer world by taking the Gamecocks to the 16 NCAA Tournaments, including six-straight times from 1985-90 and in 15 of the last 19 seasons. In the past 17 years, the Gamecocks have advanced to the second round 10 times and have four quarterfinal and two Final Four appearances. In 1993, the Gamecocks advanced to the NCAA Championship Game, losing to Virginia by a 2-0 count.
