With an Assist From God
By ALEX YANNIS
June 29, 1986 MEXICO CITY-In a game that was billed as a battle of continents, Argentina edged West Germany, 3‚2, to win the World Cup today and set off a wild celebration among South American and Mexican soccer fans at Aztec Stadium. Argentina took a 2‚0 lead, getting goals by Jose Luis Brown in the 22d minute and by Jorge Alberto Valdano in the 56th. But the West Germans rallied and tied the game on goals by Karl- Heinz Rummenigge in the 74th minute and by Rudi Voeller in the 81st before Jorge Luis Burruchaga gave Argentina the victory in the 84th minute.
It was the second World Cup for Argentina, which captured the coveted trophy when it was host of the tournament in 1978. For West Germany, winner of the tournament in 1954 and 1974, the loss was its second consecutive failure in the final. It also kept alive the tradition that American teams win in the Americas, and Europeans in Europe.
"I was convinced this was our year," said Diego Armando Maradona, the Argentine star who, although scoreless, was involved in all three goals. "The people of Argentina wanted this. I'm happy the World Cup belongs to South America again." Although the Germans were able to prevent the 25-year-old Maradona from scoring, it often meant that he was double-teamed, with Lothar Matthaeus getting help from a teammate. Maradona, arguably the best player in the world, required the extra attention after having scored five goals earlier in the tournament, including three remarkable ones within the previous week. One brilliant goal helped eliminate Belgium in the semifinals. Earlier, a handball that Maradona proudly described as a goal assisted by the "hand of God," eliminated England.

By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune Wednesday, January 19, 2000 What is our debt to the greats of sport? Diego Armando Maradona stopped off in Cuba on Tuesday again a man in search of a cure to the drug addiction that two weeks ago came close to killing him. He earned millions but he wants, or his wretched agent wants, cash to pay for another attempt to wean him from his cocaine dependency. "I don't want to leave this world. I'm going to keep fighting it for the rest of my life." Thus spoke a palpably sick Maradona, bloated in body and moody in mind, on Fox Sports, the U.S. television station, last Friday night. Well, it was night in the Americas. The live interview, for which Fox paid dollars 60,000 following a bedside auction, began at 3 A.M. in the Sacred Heart Institute in Buenos Aires. The timing served its U.S. audience. Maradona allegedly needed the money to pay for rehabilitation in Toronto, in Havana, or if the U.S. Immigration Department will allow, in Boca Raton, Florida. Doctors seeking to place Maradona in care dispensed with the line propounded by his agent, Guillermo Coppola, that poor Diego was framed by soccer authorities after traces of so-called social but also banned stimulants were found in his urine during the 1994 World Cup.

PRINT PAGE EMAIL ARTICLE ) Font ( ) Font Could Science Clone Soccer Brilliance? By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune Wednesday, February 26, 1997 What a week for the dreamer. It could be a short stride from the first cloned adult mammal to the reproduction of humans. Dolly the sheep was cloned in Edinburgh. The Scots love a game of soccer, and right now the really humming DNA in the sport belongs to Gianfranco Zola, a Sardinian turning in virtuoso performances for Chelsea and Italy. Little bigger than a large sheep, Zola has beguiling skill and massive earning power. He is the very essence of his sport, a performer who leaves you enriched most times he plays. He can't help it. Joy is in his nature, determination in his upbringing. Two weeks ago, playing for Italy, Zola beat England, by scoring the only goal at Wembley. It was his answer to Carlo Ancelotti, the coach at Parma who last fall decided this is the era for bigger athletes, and Zola, at 5 feet 5 inches, is physically challenged.

More racial slurs in soccer stadiums
April 22, 2005 The April 13 incident took place in Brazil during a Libertadores Cup match between Quilmes, of Argentina, and the local team from So Paulo, when Argentine player Leandro Desabato reportedly yelled a racial insult at rival player Paulo Grafite. It was the kind of thing players do all the time to throw their rivals off balance, the Argentine player explained afterward. But to everybody's surprise, Brazilian police stormed into the Argentine team's locker room as soon as the match ended and arrested Desabato on charges of "racial discrimination." The Brazilian player had filed a complaint during half-time, and a judge had acted upon it immediately. The incident triggered front-page headlines in both countries. Brazil, with a significant black population, rallied in support of its player. In Argentina, where there are very few blacks, most opinion-makers sided with their countryman, saying it was an everyday occurrence in the world of competitive sports, which should not be taken as an intentional racist statement.
