Golden Great: Diego Maradona February 2000 Issue
How often have you heard folk talking of the greatest ever player? Many times no doubt. I have been fortunate enough to have watched several of these outstanding players including George Best, Marco Van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Michael Platini, Eric Cantona, Kenny Dalglish and Liam Brady. But without doubt there is only one that I can honestly say was out of this world - Diego Armando Maradona.
What Diego meant to football in Naples is something almost too complex to explain. He was the symbol of the 80s. Without ever seeing him, or knowing a Neapolitan at that time, it is impossible to conceive what he meant for the inhabitants of that sprawling, almost third world city.
Neapolitans are famous for their spontaneity, for their happy-go-lucky approach. They have to be, otherwise they would die of hopelessness. Once you are aware of this passion that beats inside them then you can appreciate how and why the citizens went bananas over him. He was a hero for everybody.
To think it all started in a run down slum in Lanus, a small city in the province of Buenos Aires. Born on October 30, 1960, he was given his first football as a three-year-old by his uncle Cirilo. At eight he was the star of Estrella Roja Red Star, where a scout for Argentina Juniors, Francisco Cornejo claimed: "He came from another planet. From the start he seemed able to do whatever he wanted to do with the ball. He dribbled better than the others and he showed such sharp control when stopped or turning. He could also hold the ball on his head or his left foot for ages."

Prima Dona
At his best, Diego Maradona can be as graceful as Michael Jordan. At his worst, he can be as disgraceful as John McEnroe. The question is, which Maradona will show for the World Cup?
By Rick Telander Issue date: May 14, 1990 Diego Armando Maradona, who is from the backside of Buenos Aires, is the best soccer player in the world, but he is also among the worst at dealing with the world. He goes from being an ugly, prickly caterpillar to being a graceful, fluttering butterfly each time he steps onto the 110-meter pitch. When he steps off it, he devolves again into a petty little slug of a man, described by various sportswriters around the world as "indiscreet," "flawed," "explosive," "vulgar," "spoiled," "surly," "mercurial," "petulant" and plain "rubbish." Typically, he scoffs at his critics. "Do you want to know the truth? I'm better than in 1986," he boasted recently, referring to the year he led Argentina to the World Cup championship, in Mexico City. "My weight's better, my health's better, not to mention my will to play. If I need to spell it out, I'm aiming to have another great World Cup." Yes, Maradona has lost 20 pounds on a recent crash diet. But his regimen, which involves taking cortisone treatments, is considered risky by many doctors, and when his physician found out about it, he quit Maradona's service.

Whether to pity him, damn him, bless him or worship him, the media have always pursued Diego Armando Maradona. After the Argentine soccer legend was hospitalized suddenly on April 18 in Buenos Aires for respiratory and heart problems, there was an outpouring of concern in the Spanish-language press, which recalled his meteoric career.
Soccer fans know that Maradona scored what is widely considered the best goal in World Cup history against England in 1986. He dribbled around a half-dozen players and danced across more than half the field before scoring.
Characteristically, though, Maradona had clouded his own accomplishment with an earlier score in the same match, arguably the most infamous goal in World Cup history.

Legends - Diego Maradona
Diego Armando Maradona was perhaps the most enigmatic characters of soccer. He would conjure magic on the field, then blotch his book immediately thereafter. Supremely gifted, he captained Argentina to victory in the World Cup Youth tournament in 1978, before making his World Cup debut in the 1982 edition in Spain. It was an inauspicious beginning with him being sent off for retaliating after a tackle. In the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Maradona left the world agape with his stunning goals. He fisted a goal past Peter Shilton of England and later gloated it was the 'Hand of God'. If his first goal was cheeky, the second strike was divine. Maradona dribbled past seven players to score perhaps the finest goal in World Cup history. His stirring deeds ensured Argentina lifted the World Cup. He led Argentina to the finals in the 1990 finals, only to be beaten by Germany in the tournament final. In the 1994 edition, he was tested positive for drugs and that brought an end to a glorious career. During those glory days, he was signed by Barcelona and Napoli for world record signing fees and justified his top billing with a series of league wins. While he seldom took a wrong step on the field, off it; he womanized, pushed drugs, abused alcohol and sparred with authorities and the press.

Maradona ill, in intensive care
Last Updated:
Diego Maradona is heavily sedated in intensive care following a crisis of hypertension or high blood pressure, his doctors said on Sunday after the Argentine soccer great was taken ill and admitted to a clinic. Maradona, who has long been in therapy to battle a drug addiction that has left him a bloated shadow of his former self, was breathing with the help of a respirator and his condition was "reserved", the doctors said in a statement. "Diego Armando Maradona has been admitted to intensive care... because of a crisis of hypertension related to miocardium," said the statement. "He also had respiratory difficulties and so is aided by a respirator, as a result of which he is permanently sedated." "His initial haemodynamic reaction is moderately favourable," the statement added. Maradona's family doctor Alfredo Cahe refused to comment on reports that the former soccer star had taken a cocaine overdose, saying an update on his condition would be issued on Monday. Family, friends and well-wishers flooded to the Suizo-Argentina clinic on Sunday evening as news of the 43-year-old's condition spread.
