Executive summary: Led Argentina to 1986 World Cup Final Elected the greatest FIFA soccer player of the 20th century (an honor he shares with ), Diego Armando Maradona was born in 1960 in a slum outside Buenos Aires, Argentina. He quickly rose to prominence in the Argentinian soccer leagues, and became a major star. But it wasn't until the 1986 World Cup match against that Maradona became a national hero. During the second half of the quarter-final match against England, the Argentinian scored what would become known as the infamous "Hand of God" goal. 114,580 spectators plainly witnessed Maradona use his left hand to toss the ball into the net, but none of the referees claimed to notice. In the end, Argentina beat England 2-1. Diego Maradona was banned from the sport for 12 months after testing positive for cocaine in 1991. Then he was banned for another 15 months after testing positive for ephedrine during the 1994 World Cup. And he tested positive for drugs yet again in 1997, resulting in another suspension.

When football talk turns to the question of the greatest ever footballer, one name is bound to crop up: Diego Armando Maradona. He is considered to be the best player ever to come out of Argentina. His private and footballing life was however dominated by highs and lows, by grand celebrations and full-blown scandals.
Sometimes everything happened all at once. For example at the 1986 FIFA World Cup™ in Mexico. The 25-year-old was at the peak of his skills, the brilliant thinker, playmaker and marksman of a great “Gaucho” team. The tournament’s outstanding player led his country to their  second title – the first came in 1978. In doing so he scored a total of five goals and set up five others.

On Diego Armando Maradona's thirty-seventh birthday, he received news that his father had died. Then he received news that this news was not true. Shaken by the experience, and doubtless reading into it various arcane and mystical significances, Maradona immediately announced his retirement. David Hawkes Issue # 35, November 1997 October 30, 1997, was Diego Armando Maradona's thirty-seventh birthday. That day, he received news that his father had died. Then he received news that this news was not true. Shaken by the experience, and doubtless reading into it various arcane and mystical significances, Maradona immediately announced his retirement from soccer. This is the sixth time in his career that he has made such an announcement, but it is probably the last. In August, Maradona tested positive for cocaine after a match for his present team, Buenos Aires' famous Boca Juniors. The first time he tested positive for cocaine, in 1991, he received a fifteen-month suspension. He received another fifteen month suspension in 1994, after being thrown out of the World Cup in disgrace, the "performance enhancer" ephedrine coursing through his veins.

SOCCER: Pele, Maradona and Hugo Sanchez
From Mexico, Raúl Escalante writes: "'Second best' is a reference to Diego Armando Maradona, whom many people (mostly Argentines) regard as the best player of all time. Apparently Pelé gives these comparisons as much weight as they deserve - which is to say that he ignores them. No-one can deny the genius of Maradona. It is sad that, unlike Pelé, he is far from drug-free and a very poor role model. Drug dependence, however, is not explained by the temptations a youth faces, his success, etc. Hugo Sánchez, the best Mexican player of all time and a contemporary of Maradona, remained "clean" despite his long history of success (among other things he was five-time winner of the top-scorer trophy in the Spanish league, one of the two most competitive leagues in the world). Watching videos of both Pelé and Maradona playing are extremely exciting experiences - Paul Simon should try them". My comment: My lack of expertise is evident in the fact that I had never heard of Hugo Sanchez. I suppose that soccer will now disappear from the WAIS radar for another four years.
