US Soccer Selects 25 Players for Friendly Game against China
The United States has selected 25 players for a friendly game against China on January 27 at Oakland, California.
Included in the two-week training camp is 33-year-old midfielder John Harkes, a former national team's captain for 27 games until April 14, 1998, two months before the World Cup.
Harkes, who has six goals in 90 international appearances, is with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. The United States is preparing for the final round of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup with its opener on February 28 against Mexico at Columbus, Ohio. For the friendly, US coach Bruce Arena decided not to recall any of his team's Europe-based players. After the China game, the Americans play another warmup against Colombia in Miami on February 3.

    Steven Goff, The Post's beat writer for the D.C. United, discussing Major League Soccer's playoffs, said the United must tighten up their defense if they are to advance past the Columbus Crew. D.C. United eliminated the Miami Fusion on Sunday and will face the Columbus Crew in the Eastern Conference finals.
    Arlington, Va.: Steve,
    Do you expect to see Roy Lassiter, Cary Talley or Diego Sonora in a D.C. uniform next season? Steven Goff: Lassiter doubtful, Talley probably, Sonora doubtful
    Alexandria, Va.: Thank god for Kevin Payne. I am ecstatic that he's shooting for a Saturday match. My question is, Steven, was this anonymous quote: "It's typical D.C. shenanigans...we're not surprised this is happening," from a Crew official? Or did these sour grapes come from elsewhere? Steven Goff: The anonymous quote was one of several from other MLS folks who obviously are either bitter/jealous/upset at DCU and Payne.

    Bader is Having a Blast in Baltimore

    Storylines like the Baltimore Blast’s magical run to the 2002-2003 MISL Championship are not often written and are believed even less frequently. But this improbable fairy tale did indeed unfolded this year. The storybook ride had many twists and turns and look destined to be unwritten for much of the season as the Blast got off to an ominous 5-12 start. As the team lingered near the bottom of the standings, one, nay two coaching changes occurred without much success. The third coach selected to lead the Blast was one of their very own broadcasters. This coach proved to be a charm as the team caught fire. It would be a season to remember as Cinderella traded in her glass slippers for a pair of Baltimore Blast cleats. Dewan Bader along with some of the other Blast veterans helped lead the turnaround which saw them end the regular season red hot to make the playoffs. Bader was one of only four Blast defenders who played 33 games or more this season. “The greatest thing about this year is how we turned it around as a team. We had three coaches this year and the third coach, more or less, just ended up turning things over to the players. We were fortunate that we were a very experienced, a veteran team. We just buckled down, we did not have a list of great players but we had a list of very very good players that all came together.” And come together, they did. Baltimore’s run to close the regular season was impressive, but its what the Blast did in the postseason that was truly incredible.

    Rapids Lead 1-0 And Have Man Advantage After 55 Minutes;
    Fusion Score Twice To Send Rapids To Third Straight Home Defeat
    DENVER (Saturday, May 13, 2000) - The Miami Fusion defeated the Colorado Rapids, 2-1, on Saturday night at Mile High Stadium. Miami (3-3-4, 13 points) overcame a 1-0 deficit and being shorthanded for 35 minutes to score twice in the final 16 minutes and send Colorado (4-6-0, 12 points) to its third consecutive defeat at home. The Rapids, who had been outscored 10-2 in its previous two home games, took the lead in the 50th minute through Jason Bent's first MLS goal, and then were given a man advantage when Miami's Henry Gutierrez was red carded five minutes later. But it was Miami, playing its second game under interim coach Ray Hudson, who would take advantage and score goals in the 74th and 79th minutes to secure the victory. Matters worsened for the Rapids in the 90th minute when captain Marcelo Balboa was also red carded after picking up his second yellow card of the game. The red card means Balboa must sit out Wednesday's game in New England (see below).

    LAREDO, TX (May 2, 2005):
    Both Laredo Heat Youth Select Soccer teams had positive results this past weekend in Dripping Springs, TX which is outside of Austin.
    Both teams played well versus very impressive teams from the Dripping Springs Soccer Association which is under the direction of former MLS star and former leading scorer for the league Roy Lassiter. Many Laredo Heat Soccer Club fans might recall that Coach Lassiter played in a couple of games last year here in Laredo with the PDL Heat.
    The Heat Under 16 Club kept their undefeated record alive by securing a 2 – 2 versus the Dripping Springs Stars. The Heat’s two goals were scored by Arnoldo Presas and Gerardo Carillo and the Heat Under 18 team beat the Under 18 Dripping Springs Stars by a score of 4 to 1. The goals were scored by Gustavo Rubio (2), Marco Gomez (1) and Osvaldo Castillo (1).

Larry Stewart in the LA Times, and a bunch of other people, are pretty much on him like hairspray over his overly scripted announcements at the end of games. Speaking of the Olympics...when last we saw Ahn Jung Hwan, he was doing a stupid speedskating impersonation. And a couple of days later, US soccer fans forgave Koreans every tiny little slight, past, present and future, subtle and grand. Wanna burn our flag? Use it as a diaper? by Dan Loney November 14 , 2002 (CSA) — Sorry this column is a little late – the "I" on my keyboard was broken. See, that’s hilarious, because, there’s like this rule, where you’re really not supposed to use the first person in a column, and I (heh) do it constantly. "Alexi Lalas played for Padova, not Parma." How different would the 1990 World Cup have been if Wegerle, Hugo Perez and Thomas Dooley been on the team? You can only blame Bob Gansler for leaving off one of those players, though. The best explanation for Wegerle’s decline comes from google.com. When you type in "Roy Wegerle," the first site that comes up is The Phoenix Center, and Roy’s testimony for their work in rehabilitating his knee after eight surgeries. This doesn’t explain why he still made the 1998 World Cup squad, unless you consider Roy Lassiter as the only alternative. But at least he had MLS Extratime to fall back on. I don’t know what Rob Stone’s pep talk to Wegerle was before air time, but it probably went along the lines of "If you stay in a complete monotone for the whole broadcast, I’ll buy you a Kit Kat bar." It took Alexi Lalas to save MLS Extratime, however briefly. Although actually my cats could have replaced Wegerle and still looked good in comparison.
