DENVER ( Saturday, May 3, 1997 ) The Colorado Rapids celebrated Cinco De Mayo with their first-ever victory over Tampa Bay Saturday, thrilling 10,714 fans at Mile High Stadium with a 2-0 decision that elevated Colorado to the top of the Major League Soccer Western Conference standings for the first time in the team's history. Rapids midfielder Chris Henderson, who leads the team with 10 points (3 goals, 4 assists), collected two assists to lead Colorado to its third shutout victory of the season. The Rapids, 3-5, moved into first place in the Western Conference with nine points, ahead of Kansas City (3-3, seven points) and Dallas (3-4, seven points). Defender Steve Trittschuh scored his second goal of the season, both on headers, in the 62nd minute when he headed home Henderson's free kick from the right side. The Rapids, who outshot Tampa Bay 14-13 and assaulted Tampa Bay goalkeeper Scott Budnick with seven shots on goal to the Mutiny's one, scored their second goal in the 76th minute. Forward Wolde Harris skipped a header down the left sideline to a sprinting Henderson. Henderson dribbled to the corner, and booted a low centering pass across the goal mouth. Midfielder Adrian Paz, who has four assists on the season, booted home his first goal of the season by one-timing the cross to the near side.

1998 World Cup/Men's National Team
The cause of the team's problems was a matter of endless debate, but it appeared to be a combination of Sampson's increasingly authoritarian coaching style clashing with some of the major veteran stars, as well as a number of last minute personnel and tactical changes. Added to that was a lack of adequate playing experience against top competition during early 1998. Outside of the first two post-Gold Cup games, against Netherlands and Belgium, none of the other post Gold-Cup opponents was truly of top caliber, and the scheduling of friendlies against Macedonia and Kuwait because their playing style was supposedly similar to first round opponents Yugoslavia and Iran was questionable at best. In fact that could have been detrimental, lulling the US into a sense of complacency against those relatively weak teams. The year actually started fairly well for the Americans beginning with a good, closely fought 1-0 victory over Sweden on January 24, with the lone goal coming from Roy Wegerle. This was followed by the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup, to decide the North American champion. The US was eager to reclaim the cup after having lost to Mexico on the two previous occasions. The Americans opened on February 1, 1998 with an easy 3-0 win over Cuba, which the US had not played since 1949. Wegerle, Eric Wynalda, and Joe-Max Moore scored in that effort. This was followed by a 2-1 win over Costa Rica, with goals by Eddie Pope and Preki Radosavljevic, who were quickly winning their spots on the world cup roster. That was especially true for Preki, who scored the US's only goal in the semifinal stunner over Brazil at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, as the US beat the defending world champions for the first time ever in a full international.

HE'S GOT A SHOT MLS top scorer Roy Lassiter is auditioning for a U.S. team starting job
In April, U.S. team coach Bruce Arena sent D.C. United striker Roy (Lights Out) Lassiter a letter. He explained that Lassiter was a strong candidate for a forward spot but that Lassiter's most likely role would be that of a sub who would play when the Americans were looking for a late goal. When the two men spoke last month, Lassiter had other ideas. "Bruce," he recalls saying, "I can't score any goals sitting on the bench. I want to be a starter."
He's expected to get his chance on Sunday when the U.S. meets Argentina in a friendly in Washington, D.C. Through last weekend Lassiter led MLS with 11 goals in 11 games, and he will likely start against Argentina in place of Brian McBride, who is sidelined with a broken cheekbone. "We don't have a lot of goal scorers eligible to play, and Roy has been finishing off his chances," says Arena. "That's what goal scorers Tools: Save Article

As the 1990's left, so did the groundbreaking success that United enjoyed in their first four seasons in MLS. The 2000 and 2001 season provided a few bright moment, mostly through the play of a pair of teenaged stars-in-the-making: midfielder Bobby Convey and forward Sanction Quaranta. the sale of DC United soccer tickets was phenomenal In 2000; year-old Convey became the youngest player to suit up for an MLS side when he took the pitch in the Los Angeles on March 25. That record would stand for little more than a year, when a younger 16-year-old Quaranta would not only become the youngest player in MLS history, but would also be named the youngest All-Star collection and Player of the Week in league history.

    History
When the 1994 World Cup tournament was awarded to the United States, US Soccer promised to help establish a Division I outdoor soccer league as soon as possible after the tournament ended. World Cup USA Chairman Alan I. Rothenberg announced plans for Major League Soccer (MLS) on Dec. 17, 1993. Twenty-two cities submitted bids for teams. In October of 1995, it was announced that MLS would begin play in March of 1996 with ten teams: the Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, D. C. United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, MetroStars, New England Revolution, San Jose Clash, and Tampa Bay Mutiny. The Chicago Fire and Miami Fusion were added as expansion teams in 1998. The MLS originally had two conferences, but was reorganized into three divisions, with four teams each, in 2000. However, the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny were dropped before the 2002 season, and the league went back to the two-conference format. The MLS did away with the penalty shootout in 2000. If a game is tied after regulation time, the teams play two five-minute overtime periods. If the score is still tied, that's the final result.
