This site would look much better if you upgraded to a newer browser capable of supporting web standards Monday, July 30, 2001
Just to annoy me NTL have decided to delete all my website's files from its server. Luckily I had the foresight that they would be so courteous and I saved most of my files which I have now uploaded to a new server and (hopefully) everything should be working OK. If you can read this it's an achievement. It would be a good idea to make sure that, if you have saved my site as a favourite, it is as www.allthingsfootie.co.uk and not any of the old ones (cjb.net findhere.com etc). A bit of footie as well to keep you going - Arsenal beat Real Mallorca 2-0 in Austria today, an own goal set up by Dennis Bergkamp and Giovanni Van Bronkhorst's first for the club were the highlights of the game. Along with Sol Campbell's first outing in an Arsenal shirt. I'd tell you more about the game but I was stuck on a train for most of it. Belgian/French midfielder Steed Malbranque will sign for Fulham in a deal worth around 4.5m - Arsenal are among clubs to have made a bid for him a couple of years ago but the youngster wanted to wait until he'd got some experience before making a big move from Lyon. A sensible policy I say.

It could be a short stride from the first cloned adult mammal to the reproduction of humans. Dolly the sheep was cloned in Edinburgh. The Scots love a game of soccer, and right now the really humming DNA in the sport belongs to Gianfranco Zola, a Sardinian turning in virtuoso performances for Chelsea and Italy. Little bigger than a large sheep, Zola has beguiling skill and massive earning power. He is the very essence of his sport, a performer who leaves you enriched most times he plays. He can't help it. Joy is in his nature, determination in his upbringing. Two weeks ago, playing for Italy, Zola beat England, by scoring the only goal at Wembley. It was his answer to Carlo Ancelotti, the coach at Parma who last fall decided this is the era for bigger athletes, and Zola, at 5 feet 5 inches, is physically challenged.

Irwin could solve City's defence problem
KEVIN KEEGAN could find the answer to his biggest defensive problem right on Manchester City's doorstep. Manchester United's Denis Irwin has the class and experience to make the ideal right-back in the new team Keegan plans to assemble at Maine Road this summer. Blues boss Keegan has identified the right-back berth as one of the three positions he urgently needs to improve, along with midfield and striker, if his team are to regain their Premiership status next season at the first time of asking. Former skipper Richard Edghill's form and confidence disappeared under a torrent of abuse from the City fans last season and will almost certainly have to leave Maine Road to get his career back on track. Republic of Ireland star Irwin is bound to be tempted by a move across town - and a switch from red to blue - despite being offered a new one-year contract to remain at Old Trafford. Dissappointed United's record trophy-winner was disappointed that the Reds would not offer him a two-year deal and has admitted that he will be open to offers when he returns from holiday next week.

Silkmen target Irwin
DENIS Irwin is wanted to take over as manager at Macclesfield Town. Furlong has targeted 35-year-old Irwin, who lives in the area, has relevant coaching badges and according to Furlong wants to move into soccer management. Irwin was pondering his Old Trafford future in the summer and was linked with a move, with even Maine Road mentioned. But Sir Alex Ferguson handed him a contract until the end of the season. Ambitious Furlong, who will soon be advertising the vacancy, is well aware that Irwin could have no better teacher of managerial skills than Sir Alex. Would Dennis Irwin be a good appointment for the Silkmen?

Goalkeepers: Soccer's unfortunate necessity.
(Friday, April 18, 2003) The Mad Brit is not too keen on goalkeepers. A goalie broke his leg once. The Mad Brit had already put two beauties in the net and was just about to get his third for a 6-2 win when Attila the Hun on a bad hair day, came running out with his razor-sharp, steel studs looking for blood. Well you get the drift. It was nasty. Everyone heard the crunch and suspected the worst. The MB was in pain; in shock, and begging for a good cuppa tea, as it was a cold day and the field was muddy. The goalie never said sorry, in fact he smiled with a kind of Saddam Hussein grin after showing Sean Penn the door. The ambulance had to climb a steep hill to pick up the wounded Brit who faced six bleak months before he could kick a ball again. His wife threatened to divorce him if he ever played again. Do you know how difficult the simplest activities are with a full cast on your leg? While in surgery it was discovered that the right leg had been fractured once and healed by itself. Well, the MB remembered that kick too. It took place on some shabby field in a tough area of Aston in the Midlands, when some thug-looking skinhead, posing as defender put him out of action just after he'd had a try-out for the Warwickshire Boys Club's team.

Irwin played in last night's 1-0 home win over Derby County that took United four points clear at the top of the division but his present contract was due to end in the summer. The Republic of Ireland defender will now negotiate annual contracts with the club he has won four championships with and the new deal begins from this June. Irwin - the regular penalty taker for the side - is highly regarded by manager Alex Ferguson who wants this consistent performer - and former Leeds and Oldham player - to stay at Old Trafford for as long as possible. Irwin has agreed a massive pay increase to compensate for the lack of security inherent in the annual arrangement. Take this daily world soccer newsfeed onto your site TODAY! Just click here now!

For the second straight year, Springfield College in Illinois concentrated its men's soccer recruiting efforts locally and landed 12 players - nine from the area. Of the nine locals who were introduced at a press conference late Tuesday afternoon on the SCI campus, six were members of Bulldogs coach Chuck Eguez's SASA Raiders '86 team. "I've known these kids for several years, and they're quality individuals and quality players," Eguez said. "It used to be I'd look in Chicago for the players, but now I can stay in my backyard and get the same caliber of talent. These kids know each other, they know our returners and they'll fit right in." SCI finished 17-7-2 last season, losing its last two games at the national tournament. The Bulldogs have advanced to nationals four times since 1996, and twice since Eguez was named head coach in 1999.

SOCCER: Macclesfield Town are set to make a sensational swoop for Manchester United's Denis Irwin to take over as their new manager. The Silkmen have targeted the 35-year-old after the shock resignation of Gil Prescott following Sunday's defeat against Kidderminster. Macc chairman Eddie Furlong is moving fast to appoint a successor and sees Irwin as the man to bring the glory days back to Moss Rose. "Denis Irwin is my first choice for the post," confirmed Furlong. "He's obviously a big name in football and has all the contacts and experience of playing at the highest level under one of the best managers in the game. "He lives in the area and is well respected in the game. He's got his coaching badges and we know he wants to move into management. "We think this would be the ideal place for him to start on the managerial ladder. He's in his last season at United and hasn't been playing much this season. "He'll have learned a lot under Alex Ferguson and has a wealth of experience."

SOCCER: Denis Irwin has said he is flattered by Macclesfield Town's interest in him as a manager. The Manchester United full-back and former Eire international says he will not take up the Moss Rose job because he isn't thinking about a career in management. ''I am flattered that someone has thought about me for a job but I just don't think I am going to be a manager - it is as simple as that,'' Irwin said. ''As soon as I finish playing football then I will move out of the game completely. ''I am quite happy playing at the moment. I am still playing for Manchester United at European level and still enjoying it and I will keep doing that as long as I am enjoying it.''

Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday March 13, 2001 4:43 PM Updated: Tuesday March 13, 2001 6:58 PM AP MANCHESTER, England (AP) Manchester United reached the Champions League quarterfinals for the fifth straight year with a dominating 3-0 victory Tuesday over Sturm Graz before a 67,000 sellout at Old Trafford. The 1999 European Champions Cup winners, Manchester United got goals in the first 20 minutes from Nicky Butt and Teddy Sheringham, and the last strike in the final five minutes from Roy Keane. Manager Alex Ferguson, who called the club's recent play 'embarrassing,' benched midfielder David Beckham, England's best known player. United, which waited until the last round of group matches to advance, needed only to avoid a heavy loss to reach the final eight of Europe's most prestigious club competition. It was United's fourth win over the Austrians in 18 months. The spirited first half was followed by a drab second-half when Man United seemed content with its lead.
