EPL Fantasy RIPPLES ACROSS THE POND: Bowyer and the 'bad boys' take Leeds to the top Story Tools: Print Email NICK WEBSTER / Fox Soccer Channel Posted: 1396 days ago If you're looking for a genuine contender for this season's EPL title, look no further than Leeds United. Life after George Graham has been pretty sweet for the club from Yorkshire. No longer do the fans have to suffer through boring, stale 1-0 wins and mid-table mediocrity. These days, the Elland Road faithful are treated to swashbuckling displays of panache and skill with a bit of thuggery thrown in for good measure. If you believe in reincarnation this is it. The Leeds team of the late '60s and early '70s had all of the above qualities, plus the unwanted tag of football's most consistent bridesmaid. In a ten-year period they won the title twice, but finished runners-up five times just missing out on the famed Cup and League double three times. Then came the '80s and United were useless, as financial and ground problems plagued the team along with the ghost of famed manager Don Revie. Ex-players tried to turn the club around, all were unsuccessful and were either fired or resigned. Then came David O'Leary.

Gary Breen challenges Iranian sub Hashemian Republic of Ireland 2-0 Iran The Republic of Ireland will take a 2-0 lead into Thursday's World Cup play-off second leg in Tehran thanks to goals from Ian Harte and Robbie Keane. Irish boss Mick McCarthy will be satisfied with the two-goal cushion but he knows there is still a huge amount of work to do in Iran. The Iranians showed they are a formidable force and Republic goalkeeper Shay Given had to make two magnificent second half saves to keep the visitors scoreless. Harte's 44th minute opener came from a questionable penalty after Iranian defender Rezaei had been adjudged to have fouled Jason McAteer. Robbie Keane hit the second six minutes after half-time with a glorious left-footed shot. The Republic produced a frantic start with Jason McAteer attempting to weave his way through the Iranian defence and then having penalty claims for handball turned down.

Goals by in-form striker Robbie Keane, defender Gary Breen and winger Damien Duff meant Mick McCarthy's side finished second in the group behind Germany and they will play Spain or South Africa in the last 16. Ireland's progress was a triumph for McCarthy, who had to lift his squad after captain Roy Keane was sent home on the eve of the finals following a furious bust-up with his coach. "We settled in the second half, we were a bit nervous in the first," McCarthy said. "The lads have responded really well, they were brilliant."
